Can I get compensation for a near-miss accident?

Earlier this week, a possibly-intoxicated driver barreled through a red light at high speed, nearly hitting several cars (including mine) which were in the process of making a protected left turn. The resulting braking and skidding damaged the brake system in my car, resulting in about $800 worth of damage. The driver escaped, but can I file an insurance claim, or sue the driver, based on the intersection camera footage or something? If so, how would I go about that?

How long should insurance take to finalize an auto damage estimate?

I was hit by another driver, who sped off and likely won't be caught (no plate). I have coverage for this but it took nearly three weeks for my insurance company to approve the estimate from the shop. The first adjuster assigned to the claim wasn't local to the area and tried to do everything by phone/email and the company wasn't particularly communicative about the process. Is this run-of-the-mill feet-dragging for insurance companies or does mine suck? [more inside]

Not-My-Fault Accident. Other driver wants to settle without insurance

Yesterday I was rear ended by a young woman driving a scooter. She apologized and admitted fault. I took her contact information and insurance information, but did not file a police report. I thought the proper thing to do was to call my insurer, tell them what happened, and give them the other driver's insurance information, and I did so. I assumed that I should let them handle the claim. Now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. Your help would be appreciated. [more inside]

Severe car accident & injuries, unquestionable fault - get an attorney?

I am helping a family friend who was in a severe car accident. She is not a native English speaker and has zero experience with lawyers. Car accident & worker's compensation

Yesterday afternoon, while on the job, I was involved in a car accident. I was crossing an intersection when a car ran a red light and slammed into my front passenger side. My car went into a telephone pole. Thankfully there were no serious injuries to either parties however both cars were totaled. Witnesses called the police and a police report was filed. The investigator took the statement of one witness who watched the other car run the red light and hit me. I have a few questions about what happens next to make sure I am taking the right steps. Rear-end collision (3 cars, second driver fled), am I screwed?

Hi MeFi, I was on the receiving end of a car accident which occurred last week during rush-hour. I was traveling home from work on a very busy Charlestown Ave when I got had another car smash into mine. I had a bad case of whiplash and went sorta blank for a second but after I came out of the car I noticed a busted BMW behind with a driver still sitting there. The girl from the second car fled the scene. My suspicion was that she didn't have a license or didn't own the car or both. So in short, BMW (Car A) > smashes into grey vehicle with (Car B) which in turn smashes into me (Car C). My insurance adjustor is saying this is a complicated case because of how 'many impacts' I felt or heard. What the hell does this even mean? It felt like someone hit me with a hammer. He said the first party which caused the scene hasn't yet accepted responsibility and they have 30 days to do it or not. I'm sorta left broken and had two trips to ER and two MRIs taken which showed I have an upper disc injury in neck and shoulders. The back side of my car is completely damaged with me being unable to shut my trunk. It is still drivable but it looks like hell. I don't want to dish out $500 for a rental since I'm already drowning in bills. Insurance is telling me that I can't get reimbursed for the rental until someone accepts responsibility. Is this how it usually goes with insurance companies in USA? I'm flabbergasted. Should I get an attorney?

What to do on the periphery of an automobile collision?

Yesterday I was involved in the first automobile collision I have ever been involved in, and am unsure what the best way to proceed is. The pickup truck behind me was rear-ended on the interstate, resulting in it being pushed into my own vehicle. My car is practically undamaged, and I don't think I want to go through the process of filing a claim. Is this a bad idea? More details inside. [more inside]

Home car salvage: "Totalled" old car, liability only insurance.

I was in an accident in a common mid-90s sports car. Summary: Body work, broken front axle. Because of the age and damage, the insurance will likely declare the car "totaled". My insurance will likely have to pay for repairs to the other car involved. I have liability only insurance, so they're not going to pay me anything regardless. No one was injured. Does my insurance need to care about my car, if it is liability only insurance, besides assessing for "fault"? One of my family members would like to repair the car. Assuming (he has done this kind of thing before, parts are plentiful, and time is not an issue) that he can make it safely drivable again, what do I need to do to make it legally drivable again? Is there anything I can do now to make it easier to get the car on the road in the future? I'm in northern Virginia.

Can I give them a copy of my insurance card?

I live in a apartment building with a floor of parking inside the building. Two days ago, a neighbor who was parking her car next to mine dented and scratched the rear of my car. The damage is fairly minimal but will require some work. She was very apologetic about the situation and left me a voicemail stating that she had hit my car and that would should sync up to exchange insurance information. Later in the day, we talked and she suggested the we exchange a copy of each others insurance card. In this situation, is it ok to give her a copy of my entire insurance card? Is there any information on this I should not be sharing? For reference, my insurance is GEICO.
