My neighbor lent me his Canon EOS 20D to photograph art and other merch for Etsy. I haven't dropped the camera or anything like that, but it's suddenly not turning on. Or if it does turn on, it lets me take a few pictures and then dies. There is a double battery, and both are fully charged. The red light doesn't come on when I turn it on. What can I try to fix it?
I have purchased a new scanner to scan our photos and photo slides, but my computer doesn't recognize that it's hooked up. Help? [more inside]
After years of mindless snapping, I'm finally improving my photography skills by taking my dSLR everywhere and taking more photos more mindfully. This has revealed two gaps in my gear, at least for what I'm focusing on right now: a cross-body camera strap that works for my body and a lens that I like with a focal length < 50mm. Details and requirements inside! [more inside]
SHORT VERSION: What exactly is the revised canon scope with regard to Clone Wars material? The first series only, both series (and films), or what? Will either of us enjoy it? On prior casual viewing nether show held our attention. Can I hire a Darth Vader birthday-gram service in Seattle? Longwinded stuff below. [more inside]
I want to buy one of these refurbished from cannon today or tomorrow. The price difference is negligible to me. If you have any other alternative suggestions, feel free to make them. Is there something better in that range, (less than 150 USD)? [more inside]
I'm looking for a good, free, feature-rich, third-party document scanning program that's compatible with the Canon Pixma MG7520 and Windows 8.1. Do you have a recommendation? [more inside]
Sorry, yeah, I know this isn't 2008 but I'm still using a Canon HV30 anyway. Problem is firewire is dying and I don't know how to capture the video to computer anymore. Anyone have/had this problem and found solution?
I have a terrific view from my office of the construction site of a giant building. I think a timelapse video of that view for the next 18 months would be very compelling. I have a Canon 30d and lens, and a decent PC with network connectivity, that I can dedicate to this project more or less permanently. I will build a dark "hood" around the camera to keep office reflections and glare down. I have a power supply dingus on order, and once I have the camera in place I'll put some sand bags on and around it to try to keep it as still as possible. What else is there? [more inside]
I used to use Canon Vixia HF M500 and upgraded to Canon HF G20. The video format is .mts. They open in VLC player and have interlacing lines through them. Why is the quality so bad? The M500 shoots in MPEG4 HD straight from the camera and had high quality large files. Can the G20 shoot in MPEG4 format? If not, what is the best setting to use when shooting? What is the best way to convert them on a Mac quickly while maintaining quality to upload? [more inside]
I'm looking into buying a new camera. I was a casual dslr user (Canon) but now I rarely use it and want to find a lighter camera (but with comparable quality) to bring when I travel. I also like the look of the Fuji X cameras because I do think they look less obtrusive and generally really attactive to me. I am completely overwhelmed by all the choices. [more inside]
Help me clean our Canon EOS Rebel T1i camera after it came home from the wife's sister's bridal shower with more than a few buttons and dials that are sticky or mushy. For what it's worth it does not smell like vodka and seems to work fine otherwise, for now at least. [more inside]
A lot of ink has been spilled on the subject of whether video games are art, but rorgy's recent megapost on Homestuck reminded me that comparatively little has been written on the idea of Internet Art. Such works that leverage the internet as a unique creative medium fascinate me, and I'd love to find more. What are some other works that qualify? [more inside]
I can print very easily from other applications mac, but when I try to print with the exact same set up from Lightroom 4 I get this error: Starting manual feed printing. 1. Load a sheet of paper into the manual feed tray. 2. Press the printer's RESUME button to start printing. It is the exact same set up that works with other applications but I still keep reloading the paper and pressing the resume button but it still doesn't work, what is wrong? Please help! [more inside]

I need a recommendation for a camera lens for my Rebel Xsi. I'm photographic quilts indoors (the quilt is hanging flush against a wall) and I can't photograph the whole dang thing with my current lenses (a 50mm 'nifty-fifty' and a EFS 18-55). Is there an affordable lens I could buy that would work better? The distance from wall-to-wall is about 7 feet. The quilt I was trying to photograph was 70x70 inches. Thanks in advance.
We just bought a Canon iPF8400 printer at work. Yay! We support student services and bought it for student organizations/groups/projects that need poster printing. However, now that we have it, we realize that none of our fellow IT folks have test/sample jobs to send to it. Help me find something to print... [more inside]

I'm buying my first DSLR, a Canon 60D. My original intention had been to purchase a body and (18-55mm) lens kit and spend some time learning with that before purchasing any other lenses. However, I have found an excellent deal on a 60D body only and am contemplating purchasing that and putting the savings (and maybe a little top-up from the slush-fund) to purchasing a separate lens. (Especially as i understand that kit lenses tend not to be great quality). What would be your recommendation for a good, versatile lens for a DSLR beginner?

I'm looking for a lens that will give me a good range of wide shots (buildings, landscapes, etc) as well as the nice details in closer shots. I'm used to working with a Nikon film camera and a 50mm f/1.8 lens. What normal or close to normal lens would you recommend for a camera with a 1.6x crop factor like the Canon Rebel T4i? The kit lens is an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II, which works, but I miss being able to take photos in low light without a flash.
What kind of equipment could I purchase within a $300 budget for the backdrop and lighting? My house is naturally very dark. I use white plates and minimal props for the food. My camera is a Canon 40D. I don't have much time lately so I'll spend a little more for convenience. [more inside]

I am a rank beginner at photography. Last night I took my DSLR to an auto race and most of my pictures turned out blurry or under/overexposed or otherwise sucky. Occasionally I got lucky. What am I most likely doing wrong, and how can I get better at shooting cars in motion? I'd appreciate your tips or links to online tutorials. [more inside]
For motion itself, will a new canon point and shoot (digic5) have the same movement quality as the 5d mark 3 (their nice digic 5 slr)? I understand that the lens quality will differ (chromatic aberration, etc), but what about seeing how the video handles movement, skew, and motion? [more inside]
