Should I ask my HR department to stop auto-deducting federal & provincial tax from my paycheque, given the following conditions? Alternatively, can you recommend a good personal tax advisor in Vancouver, Canada? [more inside]
For years I used Google Voice to have all my voicemail forwarded to my email inbox. It was great. Then I moved to Canada, and Google Voice will not connect to Canadian numbers. I have spent many hours trying to figure out a workable solution that will do the same thing (forward voicemails to email as .mp3s) in Canada and have not yet found anything. [more inside]

I'm going up to Vancouver for the weekend soon and find myself with a bit of a clothing budget and a favorable exchange rate. I don't shop at the same stores as my woman friend up there due to differences in taste and size range, and my other woman friend there is off at a meditation retreat so I can't ask her. Given the preferences below the fold, where should I shop for clothes and shoes? [more inside]

So, my cat is too big to fit in the small pet carrier that's allowed for Delta flights between nyc and montreal, so I can't take my cat as a carry-on. It doesn't look like I can take my cat with me via greyhound or amtrak, so, what are my alternatives?
Ok, so I posted this question a while back. I got some great responses and insight, however, I still haven't decided if I should purchase an Apple TV. [more inside]
My stepdaughter and infant granddaughter will be visiting us in Ontario from Manitoba for 2-3 weeks over Christmas. I'm getting conflicting information about whether they need supplementary travel health insurance over and above what their Manitoba Health Card covers with inter-provincial agreements. What is covered? What isn't? How much should I expect to pay for extra coverage?
So I'm going to be spending about a month in Edmonton, AB this December and need to find an inexpensive cell phone and plan. I don't need data, only text & voice. I've seen other similar questions but they seemed to all have the option of bringing in a mobile phone from abroad whereas I want to buy something cheap and not too crappy.

For the upcoming Canadian election on Oct. 19, I would like to vote in advance. However, I am not registered to vote, and cannot register through the online system as I do not have an Ontario driver's license. Is it possible for me to vote in advance if I'm not registered?
I'd like to get my passport photos taken in Seattle. The complication is that they need to meet dimensions required for a Canadian passport. Camera shops are mostly out of business, and FedEx and UPS offices can only take pictures meeting US passport dimensions (they print out to 2" x 2", and are too small). Per instructions, I am not allowed to take them myself. Do I have any other reliable and inexpensive options available in the Seattle area?
The iPhone (2010-2015, RIP) in my pocket has finally perished and I have to look for a replacement. I am in southern Ontario and have been dealing with Fido mostly problem-free for fifteen years, but I am open to other suggestions. I am all over Canada frequently for work so coverage, it is a thing. Data is less important - my current plan has the lowest possible amount and I think I have exceeded the cap two or three times in five years. [more inside]

I am a Canadian citizen and web developer / eLearning specialist who has been working remotely (in Canada) for several American clients. Some of my clients are interested in having me come down for short periods to work with them. I am not an employee of any American company, and from what I can see, I cannot be sponsored for a TN visa or an H1-B visa. Is there any way at all that a Canadian consultant can legally work in the US for short periods of time without being an employee? [more inside]

I'm a US resident, looking for a cell-phone I can use both in the USA and Canada to receive phone calls. Any outgoing calls would be a case of a very serious emergency, and I don't particularly care what they cost. Minimal if any texting. No smartphone. Minimal minutes. I'm looking for a way to have a phone on which a few select people can reach me if they need to, and which will work across the widest area possible. Long standby battery life a plus. Suggestions for phone and plan appreciated. [more inside]

After holding out lo, these many years, it seems I need to get a cell phone. Browsing AskMe & the internet, it seems the best, least contracty option is 7-11's Speak Out program. But maybe there's a better option of which I am not aware, and maybe you can help! [more inside]

I would like to register copyright for four works to fulfill a funding agency administrative requirement. They do not require that the registration be done in any particular country. I am registering solely to fulfill this requirement so I would like to do it in the simplest and cheapest way possible. Unless registering somewhere will somehow abridge my rights in an irrevocable way, I do not care about the legal aspects, only that registration is done by 15 September, if possible. [more inside]

My friend has an uncomplicated divorce (no assets, no kids, no shared debt, filing taxes singly.) The ex lives in Canada and is a Canadian citizen, my friend who is filing for divorce is in California and a United States citizen. She has free legal help-- they got the papers filled out properly and explained the general process, but didn't explain serving papers. Paying to speak to a lawyer is out of the question. How do we serve papers internationally, to a known address? What if she refuses delivery or can't be found?
I'll be in Vancouver and the surrounding area next week. What's the best way for me to get data on my cellphone? Something like a prepaid mobile SIM card tied to a data plan. Just relying on wifi isn't an option as half of the time I won't be in the city. [more inside]

I am finishing my Ph.D this month and will be moving to Canada for a post-doc position. The town where I will be moving to has a VERY tight rental market and from what I have heard, apartments rent within hours of being posted on the local rental websites. My husband is flying out about a month before we officially move up to secure a place for us to rent, but we are worried about trying to pay for a place without a Canadian bank account. We don't want to give cash to the landlord because it is untraceable and we are pretty sure no one will accept a check from a US bank. Has anyone had to deal with this before? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks!
My partner and I are moving to Canada to get our PhDs and so we have to apply for study permits (we're US citizens). The application asks if you've been arrested, and my partner has been once. MITTENFILTER: I'm buying some mittens (requested) for a friend's kid, a 5 year old boy who is extremely enthusiastic about transportation vehicles of all kinds (though especially those related to space exploration). They live in snowbound articky Montreal (I live in sunny Southern California). The mittens should be very warm and of the variety which have long arm gaiters so they can be sealed up with the kid's winter coat's sleeves. What mittens would you recommend? Are there cool kid novelty ones, perhaps in the shape of transportation vehicles of all kinds or something similar? are there astronaut mittens for kids even? Thanks for all your tips!
