I will be moving from Canada to Germany later this year, and would like to gain from your collective experience. Do you have any tips on making a long-distance, semi-permanent move, or things that you wished you'd known ahead of time?

I bought a house to rent out to students. What should I buy? Cliche/common examples include a pool table, foosball table and a dartboard, but I'd like more varied and unique ideas.

Wondering if any Canadians have experience doing this...
I am moving next month from Winnipeg to Vancouver. I will be having most of my possessions shipped, and will be driving my car west.
In my car, I will just have my clothes, a small LCD-TV and my computer. Everything else will be shipped.
My question is .. I want to drive through the U.S. on I-94 and I-90 (from Grand Forks, ND to Seattle, WA) and then cross back into Canada towards Vancouver.
Does anyone know if the border officials (US or Canadian) are going to give me any hassle moving this way? I am just worried about them thinking that the stuff in my car is things I bought in the states, even though I am just moving them via the US.
I have done the Manitoba-B.C. drive a few times and I want to go through the northern U.S. for a change.
Thanks!

Moving Grad-Students: Two of us are moving back to Ontario from Edmonton, Alberta. We need to ship ourselves and our stuff. Options include: buy a (cheapish) car/van and drive (we'd sell it upon arrival), one-way van rental (rather expensive?), fly and ship our stuff (Greyhound?). Any wisdom much appreciated.

I'm looking to relocate to Ontario for the summer with the possibility of staying longer if I'm accepted to one of the schools that I've applied to there. In particular, I've been looking at London, Hamilton, possibly Brantford. My significant other lives in New York (I'm moving from B.C.) so close to the border would be nice if there's a decent supply of job opportunities. What about Niagara Falls or St. Catharines? Too touristy? Are there any places that I should avoid. My budget is tight, but I want someplace safe.. If you're familiar with B.C., I'd like to avoid places similar to East Hastings or Granville at all cost.
