Calling all internationally mobile, 'creative-class' freelancers- how do you determine who taxes you, if your design clients are in one country (for me, USA) you live in another country (Germany) but are a citizen of yet somewhere else (Canadian)? Does everyone get a piece of my income?

My friend, a Canadian citizen, is visiting me here in Chicago. First day here, she had her messenger bag with her passport (and all her cash, and her laptop) stolen. Where the hell do we go from here? How do you get a Canadian with no ID a Canadian passport? How does she board her flight in a few days?

My husband and I have just returned from a great trip to West Texas; both back to work tomorrow. In order to keep our sanity, need to start planning the next road trip. Any suggestions? Probably no more than 10-12 days during the summer and we are willing to fly to a start off point. We like to linger. Preferably in the US or Canada.

As a US citizen, living and working abroad for many years, I recently heard of a new law that I must file tax returns on the US by Aug 31, 2011 or face a penalty. Anyone know about this? If US citizens live and pay taxes abroad, they generally are exempt up to $91,500.

Anyone had any issues living in the US but flying internationally out of Canada? We (English green-card holder me + US citizen wife) live in far upstate NY and it seems that flying to London and back out of Ottawa using Air Transat is the cheapest and quickest way. Are there any pitfalls I'm unaware of? Any craziness with border control between the US and Canada if you tell the that's what you're doing? Thanks.

I have 2 large boxes of used clothing/shoes to ship to the US soon, and the post office employee told me the volume of items would definitely not pass the border unless I have a Certificate of Disinfection. Unfortunately, this document seems non-existent. There is NO information in Google, answers are always something along the lines of,
"Ship it in several smaller boxes!" or
"Don't say it's clothing!" which are avoiding the point: I am trying to do this by the book (legally).
Does anyone have experience with this particularly evasive document, or parameters that would let Customs determine the packages are okay?
Or another way I could *legally* ship the clothing to the US?

Do to a family medical emergency, my wife and I are probably going to be renting a car and driving from Philadelphia to Toronto tomorrow night. We are both Canadians living in the US on temporary NAFTA visas. Fun complication: Our daughter is four months old and is an American citizen with an American birth certificate. We haven't yet gotten her a passport or applied for her Canadian citizenship.
Should we expect to have any difficulty crossing the border with her, in either direction? Is there anything we can get in the next 24 hours to make things go more smoothly?

Can anyone advise me on some specific comparisons between the US and Canadian University systems? I am in charge of internationalisation at a British University and we would like to investigate establishing academic partnerships and indeed possibly some direct recruitment in both countries. While we are roughly clear on how the US system operates, Canada is a bit harder to grasp.
