Friend asking for monetary help - How do I check their story?

I was contacted recently by an ex-gf living in California, with a tale of woe. Sent some money along, and apparently things are getting worse, and amazingly, less believable. Any ideas on how to verify any of this? [more inside]

Geography is Destiny? What's the best media on California history?

I think California has a unique and interesting history. I'd like to spend 2017 deep diving into all things California and build my ultimate California Bibliography. Specific request: I'm looking for media (books primarily, but also podcasts, magazine pieces, documentaries, (maybe?) movies) that are less a survey of the whole history of the state and more those that explore a specific time period in a specific place. More popular/easy to read or consume/social history than academic/dry/dissertation types. Edu-tainment? [more inside]

Help us plan a Southwestern family Christmas

We would like to rent a place for a week-long family Christmas and are trying to decide on a location. We have three groups of people: two adults in Oakland, California; two adults and four children near Salt Lake City; and one adult in Michigan. The children range in age from two to eleven, and the place has to be driving distance from Salt Lake, as the Salt Lake group can't afford to fly six people. Plus we want to keep costs down as much as possible. Other considerations inside. [more inside]

Architectural salvage tourism?

I have a Victorian house in Southern California and am interested in restoring it using period-appropriate house parts. These are in short supply in my area and most architectural salvage places are not so internet-savvy, so I'm wondering if there might be a part of the country within road trip distance where the pickings are better. Can I get locally produced wood veneers in California?

I'm looking for (small quantities) of wood veneer strips from wood grown in California. Is such a thing possible? It could be new or reclaimed, but I want to make a ring so any re-used would have to be amenable to that. Additional bonus points for wood from the central coast area. Is having veneer manufactured from locally sourced wood a not insanely expensive option?

Cycling the California coast - which parts are missable?

A friend and I are cycling the California coast, going south from Crescent City to LA starting today. Short getaway options 2-3 hours (driving only) from the South Bay Area?

My partner and I (30s, no kids, both geeky/arty introverts) have a couple vacation days coming up. We'd like to take a short, low-hassle overnight trip somewhere, but we've done the Monterey thing multiple times, we don't want to go to San Francisco, and we aren't really into wine tasting. What else can we do that doesn't require a ton of advance planning or more than around 3 hours sitting in the car? [more inside]

California State Tax Troubles

Can you identify this plant?

Asking for a friend who found these in his Los Angeles backyard: The nuts start out green like olives, then turn. Inside is a hard shell.
