Can my senior citizen mother use Uber or Lyft without a smartphone?

She drives but can't go far, doesn't have friends where she lives (so can't ask someone else to drive her), and isn't the socializing type. I'd like to find a way to make her more mobile for shopping and doctors' appointments. Lyft or Uber seem like possible options, but she doesn't have a smartphone, and barely can use a cell phone. She can use her home computer. She lives in Hacienda Heights, CA. [more inside]

With what should I cover my patio?

Our house in Southern California needs a patio cover. We want something with a lattice top kind of like this. We don't want wood because our last one was made of wood and it got termites. There are multiple options for non-wood materials: faux-wood textured aluminum, vinyl, composite (i.e., Trex). What are people's experiences with these kinds of patio covers? [more inside]

Where to send my grandfather's memoir?

I recently finished editing my grandfather's memoir and I'm wondering what institutions may be interested in a copy. He is a German Jew (b. Halberstadt) who left for San Francisco in 1934. Topics: his early childhood (family life, local businesses, Jewish life/education, shifts under Nazi regime), the voyage, a good deal about growing up in San Francisco in the 30s and 40s, some WWII Army engineer anecdotes of France/Belgium, Berkeley in the 50s, the technology industry, MIT in the 60s, and more. Help me establish California residency without a permanent home address.

I'm moving from the East Coast to Los Angeles in the next few weeks. It is intended to be a permanent move, but I will be staying at an Airbnb for the first couple of months while I apartment-hunt, etc. In studying the California DMV guidelines here I see that I will need to provide a residential address to print on the license (even if I use a PO Box for my mail.) Is there any way around this? [more inside]

Termite filter: tenting vs spot treatment (California)

Hello! We're buying a house from very nice sellers in San Diego County, California. A requirement of our agreement is that they provide Section 1 termite clearance. Their termite inspection recommended tenting, but the sellers want to go with spot treatment instead because of the risk to plants around the house. I don't think I care as long as Section 1 is cleared, but am I setting myself up to have to tent the house later? The seller indicated that he would be willing to tent if we feel strongly about doing it. [more inside]

I want to know exactly what Brock Turner's sentence is, and it doesn't seem to me that any news outlets have been reporting this information. I do not want to debate or discuss the sentence. I am aware that the media is reporting 6 months in county jail, followed by 3 years of probation. California Dreamin': Road Trip Edition

What would you see in California if you were starting out in LA and had a car and 7 days to travel, only caveat being that you need to be in San Diego on the morning of the 8th day? We're going to LA for a family wedding in August. Taking an extra week afterwards to travel around and see as much of California as possible. However, we have to prioritize as we only have 7 days. Flying out from San Diego on the 8th day. We will have a rental car and we're interested in seeing as much as possible, as it will be my first time in California. Driving a lot is not a problem; we love roadtrips, and both of us drive so we can take turns. Please help us plan an itinerary! [more inside]
