So I've decided that I need to make my own damn cereal. I DO NOT WANT HOT CEREAL. I want to know how I can make my own COLD cereal, which can be used as the base for milk and blueberries. [more inside]

I have no other cold symptoms, but my phlegm factory won't stop cranking out this gunk that coats my throat and gives me a terrible sore throat every night. But: no coughing, no fever, no sneezing . . . I'm totally fine except for this crud oozing into my throat. First of all: eew! Second, why is this happening without any other symptoms, and how do I stop it? (Yep, I'm calling the doc tomorrow, but today is Sunday, so I thought I'd ask in the meantime.)
I haven't had anything worse than a mild sniffle in years, but now I'm down with a raging flu. I feel horrible and am getting cabin feverish, and I HATE IT. Do you have any tips or tricks for me to feel better right now? [more inside]
Our 10 month old pup, Kesugi, is still struggling with loose leash walking. We were doing reasonably well with the combination of a Gentle Leader and very frequent high-value treats, but then real winter hit. Now what do we do? [more inside]
So, I lost a fair chunk of weight in the past year, which has had many beneficial effects, to be sure. Unexpected downside: I have turned into a complete wuss about cold. After years of considering myself innately warm-blooded, merrily running around hatless through all the winter months, I am now dreading going outdoors even to grab a quart of milk. This will not do. Fellow cold-wusses, how do I adapt? What are your best tips, tricks and products for dealing with the cold? Or alternatively, toughening myself up so it doesn't bother me so much? [more inside]
How crazy would it be to travel to Europe in late Feb/March for a 5 day vacation? [more inside]
Last night as I was closing the shades I noticed cold air coming in and discovered what I think is a fairly recent gap between the wooden window sill and the vinyl windows. The gap is letting in quite a lot of air, and I am trying to figure out a) what caused it and b) if this is something we can fix (temporarily) ourselves. [more inside]
I'm in the market for a versatile men's winter jacket for outdoor activities such as hiking, running, etc that I can also wear out on the town without looking silly. I found a few on Cyber Monday that I really liked, but all of them were out of stock for my size/preferred color. I don't want to pay list price. How can I find a decent deal after the two biggest sales of the year are over? I'm looking for a quality jacket that is hopefully discounted a fair amount. [more inside]
My 2003 VW GTI VR6 warms up fine and gives heat while driving, but at idle it immediately blows cold air. [more inside]
Not meant to be snarky on Buffalo per se-I wonder this about most cold places- but why did the people who settled Buffalo think it would be a good idea to live there permanently? [more inside]
This week's temperatures being consistently in the single digits and below zero has made me realize that I need some snow boots. I've had my eye on the Sorel Tivoli High II's but after reading some reviews, it sounds like the quality has declined in recent years. Can you give me info on Sorel's quality of late, or alternatively, recommend some good boots? Snowflakes (heh) within! [more inside]
Ambroxol is an over-the-counter medicine used to thin mucus secretions, similar to the commonly sold guaifenesin. I've been able to buy it in Europe (usually under the brand name Mucosolvan) for a long time now. They even make a kids' formula! But why isn't it sold in the US? [more inside]
I'm looking for dog boot recommendations. We use mushers paw wax, but we run in the snow/ice in Minnesota. I'd like some boots as back on I bought a of Good2go Extreme weather boots. After one 2 mile run the fabric is cracking and they stay on most of the time but not as well as hoped. Shes a red heeler mix if that helps at all. any recommendations for dogs+running+snow are much appreciated.
Three of the hardier herbs we had been growing in our back yard--sage, mint, and lavender--survived our absent-minded neglect and made it through the summer. As the temperatures drop, we've taken them indoors for the winter. We can provide either 1) warmth and artificial light, or 2) cold protection from the elements, but natural light all day long. What's better? [more inside]
I have a whole pickled cabbage sitting in my fridge and I don't want to throw it out. Help! [more inside]
I need a lightweight jacket for the Fall. I live in Houston, and our temperature in October through December is fairly mild, so I don't need a heavy jacket for freezing weather. If needed, I already have coats for that. This is not a jacket for exercise, but I will be doing yard work, walking to the convenience store, that sort of thing, so there will be enough mild physical activity to keep me warm as long as I don't lose too much heat to the elements. My sweetie brought home a summer cold, I caught it, and I think it is turning into an ear infection. Is there anything I can do to head that off at the pass? [more inside]
Can anyone suggest a relatively quiet place to study(must have power socket and wifi) without loud music and not too cold? In NYC, Brooklyn or Manhattan. Preferrably can stay for long hours. NYU library is too cold due to AC temp too low. I already wear long pant and fleece jacket, just cant sit still without chills. Thanks.
Where is the coolest place I can visit in July or August? Primarily in terms of weather, but also the other type of cool! Preferably in the US, due to cost, but also open to foreign locales if the average flight might be $1000 or less, leaving from the Midwest. [more inside]
I grew up in Wisconsin, and have hated winter for most my life. As a kid it was okay, but since being a teen I was sure that I'd move out to a part of the country that had mild winters. Recent years though, I've come to realize I don't want to move away from friends, and I actually like parts of the city and am starting to see myself growing old here. I just really really hate winter. Can I come to terms with my hate of winter and my new found love of the area? [more inside]
I think I have the flu. It's kind of mild, but has all the usual stuff like headache, body aches, lots of mucus, exhaustion, mild fever. I am also teaching a 130-student course and we are in week 11 of 13. I have 35 assignments to mark by tomorrow, an exam to finalise by Monday, and an assignment to create today. Fortunately I don't have any face-to-face time today, so I have stayed at home, but if I don't get this stuff done, not only do I miss university imposed deadlines, but I just pile up extra work for myself next week, that will make it impossible for me to prepare my lectures on time. All I want to do is curl up in bed and sleep, or watch trashy TV. Does anyone have some physical or psychological tricks for making yourself work in these circumstances?
I'm looking for a recommendation for a women's rain coat, with some specific requirements, because I'm really done with freezing in something waterproof or being warm and soggy in wool when it's 30-45F out. [more inside]

I am convinced - or I've convinced myself - that there was an xkcd diagram that showed winter as unbearably cold and long, summer as unbearably hot and long, and a very short burst of spring and autumn where temperatures were just right. Does this actually exist, or is it some other cartoon, or have I imagined something as real?
Help me find the warmest full length winter coat in the world. [more inside]
When I start to feel a cold coming on, the last thing I want to do is spend time and energy trying to figure out the best treatment approach. I am seeking a guide that will help me identify and self-treat common/mild illnesses (both attacking the root cause and alleviating symptoms) as well as indicate when it would be wise to see a doctor. I would prefer a printout rather than an interactive tool like WebMD.

Where in Toronto can I find (1) an extra large size toque with ear coverage (like the Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon) or (2) size 15 waterproof warm winter boots (like the Sorel 1964 PAC T)? I've already visited or called several places (MEC, Get Outside, Patagonia) to no result. [more inside]
I'm caught in a casual, hot and cold relationship with a person I fell in love with years ago. I can't tell anymore what is normal relationship behavior. I'm a female in my 20's, involved with a person in his 40's. We have similar sensibilities and get along great but then he goes cold. He always let's me decide if I want to stay or not. Everytime I leave, I end up coming back because I miss him and I'm greeted with enthusiasm. He's a sweetheart and never acted aggressively towards me which leaves me confused. 'Cause he'll go out of his way to help me with anything I need and once I get comfortable and thankful, he grows cold. He never saw us as "dating" even though we were plus the issues of him getting over an ex. I can be a bit of a people pleaser at times but I always abide by the rule of if you don't want to be with someone and they have strong feelings for you, you cease contact. He doesn't do this and I'm confused. I feel like a puppet. I don't know what's going on in his head. I don't even know if it's abusive or not. I have been in an abusive relationship and this doesn't mirror it so I'm having a tough time processing what's going on. Please help.
Feet and hands constantly icy but it's my feet that really annoy me. I have read this thread and several others, which gave me some great ideas, but wanting to see if there is any additional ideas for me. Male, 6 foot, 160 lbs, mid 50s in age. No history of diabetes in family ever. Yes, I may have Raynauds, but not sure what to do about it other than try and find ways to keep my feet and hands warm. [more inside]
For a Texas boy, I got pretty good at dressing for the weather in London and Seattle. But now I've moved to Toronto, where I've found my clothes inadequate for the cold of the previous couple of weeks. I was also possessed to plan on a visit to Ottawa's Winterlude in a few weeks where I have been warned I might just freeze to death. What new clothes do I need and where do I get them? [more inside]

Also, at what point should I see a doctor? Thank you!

I love to walk to and from work, all year long, and this requires a warm coat. My current coat doesn't keep me as reliably toasty as I'd like. I want something as warm as a Canada Goose coat, but I don't want that brand - i want something that every second person (in toronto) isn't already wearing, and that is (if possible) slightly more urban/stylish/flattering, and less sporty/functional looking. In particular, i really don't want a big logo/badge on it, as all Canada Goose coats do. I absolutely want a down-filled coat, though. (I've never seen a wool coat that is anywhere near as warm as down.) Bonus points for something available at a retail store in Toronto (or possibly NYC, which i visit occasionally), and that costs $700 or less.
So, it's been around -30c (-22f) daytime with windchill of -40c (-40f) and my shih tzu is protesting. This is his first winter in these temps. He is puppy pad trained, but will not use the pads during the day. For five days he has been relieving himself only at night (on training pad), and I am worried he will do damage to his health. I get cold easily. I'd like to buy a new men's winter coat that doesn't look like anything special but is secretly lined with magic warmth nodules. I don't want to be the guy bundled up in a Michelan man snowsuit when everybody around me is wearing hoodies and windbreakers. Help me fit in, fashionably speaking, while still feeling like I'm perpetually cozied up by a roaring fire. [more inside]
After months of training, I’m due to run my first 5k on Saturday morning. It’s going to be quite cold. And windy. And pouring rain. Thinking about it makes me shiver, and really, really not want to run it. Can you help me not quit it and get through the rain? [more inside]

Has anyone battled with recurrent canker sores in the mouth? They hurt like crazy and I get them sometimes as often as 2 times in a month. I discussed with the dentist and general doctor but I don't think they have a cure to stop getting them other than ease the pain when you do get them. What is your experience?
Can I raise my internal temperature/reduce my sensitivity to cold? I've always lived in cold regions (midwest, new england) but I've equally always been the one whining when it's 50 degrees out. Literally, it is 50 right now and I just got out of bed and put a big fluffy bathrobe over my long pjs and was still cold. I know all the obvs things to do to get warmer in the moment (bath, hot coffee, layers, long underwear, etc) but is there any way I can stop being so sensitive to it in the first place?
IKYNMD Two weeks ago I started getting the familiar sore throat and I knew something bad was brewing. First the coughing, then some sneezing, fatigue. Mostly coughing up a lot of phlegm that would amass at the back of my sinisis, it would trickle down into my bronchial tubes. First the color was clear, then yellow. My bronchial tubes are wheezing every time I take a deep breath. [more inside]
Occasionally I feel like I've got extremely mild cold symptoms that go away after a day or two. A very mild sore throat and a slightly stuffy nose, for example. What's going on? Am I catching a normal common cold rhinovirus and my immune system is just fighting it very effectively? Or am I catching a specific mild, almost asymptomatic variety of rhinovirus or some other virus? Or are these just normal non-specific symptoms that are unrelated to a cold? (Asking out of curiosity, not concern).
