In the last episode of the new Cosmos series, (someone portraying) Fritz Zwicky appears briefly, to sort of stare and blink and then make a gesture like this. He died in 1974. What is the source of this footage? Is it an actor (with an oddly non-speaking role, and no acknowledgment yet on IMDB), some sort of CGI magic from photos, or archival footage? Our household is unreasonably curious about this.
At the opening of the "Colbert Report" Know a District segments, he uses a a silhouette type of profile of the Congressperson about to be introduced. The person is blanked (blacked out) but the background is still featured. The background is usually of that used for their official office photo. So. How does one create a picture like this?
Mr. Hublot, the animated short film that won the Academy Award this year, is incredibly wonderful, and I want to find more films like it (or at least as well-made as that one). [more inside]
I am looking for some good documentaries about digital art. What do you recommend? Biographical movies about artists that make art with PhotoShop would be great. Movies about the history of CGI would be fascinating. Documentaries about art made for the internet could also be fun to see. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I'm looking for a type of 3D shader / renderer for which I've seen a number of demos. Most featured many objects (in the hundreds), often in greyscale, often with many of the objects acting as light sources. The quality of the renderings is very high, with a beautiful, soft chiaroscuro effect. I have a feeling the technique starts with an 'S'. Any ideas, hive mind?

So, basically, I want to know what the various options are for CGI/3D animation software. Factors to consider are, price, ease of use/learning curve required, system(s) required and so on. I know I'm being vague, but I really just want to know what the various options are. For instance, I have dabbled a very little bit with Blender, but found it beyond arcane and hard to use. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for a video I saw on the internet before May 2008. It was an interview with a ton of post-processing, making it very surreal. Seeing this image reminded me of the video. I seem to remember the interviewer was an art student, or a student of the interviewee. The interviewee had been down on his luck, and it seemed as if the interview was happening in a soup kitchen or hostel. I associate two words with the interviewee: "video art", but I can't think of any sort of title he might have. [more inside]

I want to create a web application in which the user enters text into a field and clicks on a submit button, and the text is then altered based on a set of conditions and given back to the user. What's the easiest way of doing this? I have a vague idea that I should use Perl and CGI. I don't know Perl or CGI, but I do know a bit of Java, a bit about servlets and JSPs, some Visual Basic, and quite a bit about http. [more inside]

I'm doing some Movable Type development. I'd like to add a custom query string to the normal mt-search strings. I was hoping to use PHP to do something with the string, but unfortunately I can't run PHP in the CGI files. Any options? I'm not a CGI writer, so I may be missing something obvious.

I need a php or cgi image uploader script that's hopefully not too difficult to install. I'd like to be able to give some family members a place to upload pics so that they can link to them for whatever reason. I'd like them to be able to upload one or multiple pics, and a huge bonus would be if it could show the url for each pic uploaded, so that absolutely no thinking is required on the part of anyone who doesn't get the intarweb (which is most of my family). -------> [more inside]
Can anyone recommend a decent web host whose cheapie package will support the cgi magic that is Moveable Type? I'm about to start a new Moveable Type blog and I'd like to host it in the $0-$5 per month range. I don't need a lot of web space. I don't want to use Type Pad's "Basic" service, because of the features it lacks. Is there a MT-equivalent of Blogspot? Apache on *nix would be preferred. [more inside]
