Why is the CGI in Jurassic Park so good? Despite being nearly fifteen years old, it's no worse than that in The Lord of the Rings and King Kong, and certainly better than the recent Star Wars movies. [more inside]

I want to create a web application in which the user enters text into a field and clicks on a submit button, and the text is then altered based on a set of conditions and given back to the user. What's the easiest way of doing this? I have a vague idea that I should use Perl and CGI. I don't know Perl or CGI, but I do know a bit of Java, a bit about servlets and JSPs, some Visual Basic, and quite a bit about http. [more inside]

We're trying to build a web based, semi-automated careers referral program on the company website. We'd like employees to send specific job postings to friends via our website. Due to anti-spam circumventions in formmail and other such programs, this is proving difficult. What CGI/PHP tools would you recommend? [more inside]

I'm doing some Movable Type development. I'd like to add a custom query string to the normal mt-search strings. I was hoping to use PHP to do something with the string, but unfortunately I can't run PHP in the CGI files. Any options? I'm not a CGI writer, so I may be missing something obvious.

I need a php or cgi image uploader script that's hopefully not too difficult to install. I'd like to be able to give some family members a place to upload pics so that they can link to them for whatever reason. I'd like them to be able to upload one or multiple pics, and a huge bonus would be if it could show the url for each pic uploaded, so that absolutely no thinking is required on the part of anyone who doesn't get the intarweb (which is most of my family). ------->

Can anyone recommend a decent web host whose cheapie package will support the cgi magic that is Moveable Type? I'm about to start a new Moveable Type blog and I'd like to host it in the $0-$5 per month range. I don't need a lot of web space. I don't want to use Type Pad's "Basic" service, because of the features it lacks. Is there a MT-equivalent of Blogspot? Apache on *nix would be preferred.
