Need quick thoughts - apartment hunt crisis!

Apartment hunting in Brooklyn moves a mile a minute and we have a quick decision to make. There's a good apartment in park slope. We love the idea of it but there's one weird thing: there's a "bump" in the ceiling. The ceiling is sort of tiled, and the area under the light fixture buckles down into a ~meter wide contact lens-like shape. It's odd, and the landlord doesn't plan to "fix" it because he says there's no problem. There's no sign of mold or leaking there or anywhere else in the apartment for that matter. Questions: 1) What concerns should we have and 2) should we sign a lease? For those who don't know NY housing hunts, if you don't decide, someone else will and then you're back to square 1, so hoping folks can weigh in with everything we should be thinking about! (and I don't know how to post a picture, but will if someone tells me how!)

Gluten Free in Brooklyn (Fort Greene area)?

Asking for my wife, who doesn't have an account. My wife will be staying near Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn for about three weeks. She has a problem with gluten - trace amounts and cross-contamination are an issue. Looking for both dining and grocery shopping suggestions. She has relevant apps and online resources but not coming up with much to go on. Would love some local perspective. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Dating in New York City, places to go, things to see and do

Sometimes people invite me on a first or second date and then insist that I suggest a place to go or a thing to do. What are some fun/interesting/free/inexpensive things to do in Brooklyn and Manhattan south of ...say the 70s east or west side? Budget conscious is important because the concept of "who invited" gets murky in this situation, and I make sure to always be prepared to pay for anything I have suggested. So pizza suggestions are good. Steaks are not. [more inside]

One fat bee patrols my deck

Ever since spring weather arrived in Brooklyn, there's been a single large bee patrolling my 3rd floor balcony. (1) What's the deal with this bee - where can I read more about its lifestyle? And (2) can I gently discourage it and its kind from hanging out and buzzing around my head when I want to sit out in the sun? It mostly ignores me when I'm out there, but I feel watched the whole time. [more inside]

Should we be using a Manhattan broker in Brooklyn?

We've been looking to purchase apartments with a broker based in Washington Heights, starting in upper Manhattan, but have now shifted to southern Brooklyn. In the neighborhood that we're focusing on now one brokerage seems to list 75% of the apartments for sale. Are we putting ourselves at a disadvantage because we're 1 - not using a broker from the area (though our broker is very nice and has been very helpful 2 - not just going direct to the local brokerage and asking them to represent us (even if they're the listing agents on a property)? Who Made Those Great Little Freebie Maps (Chicago, Brooklyn, etc)

In 2010, coffeeshops and bookstores (etc.) gave away (for free) cool folded local maps on good, thick paper filled with tips for alterno/artisanal lesser-known shops/restaurants/cafes/bars. The drawing, production, and recommendations were all surprisingly good. There were editions for Chicago, Brooklyn, and, likely, elsewhere. I'm trying to figure out who made them, and whether they're still available. Help?

Detective/Mystery Novels in Current Day New York?

A little while back I stumbled upon a detective novel (Losers Live Longer) that takes place in 2009 NYC and utilizes actual city streets, restaurants, bars, etc. The writing was pretty average, but the book kept me constantly aware of the protagonist's location (oftentimes cross-streets). The real-world geography of areas I knew well really sucked me into the world and engaged me on another level than the narrative alone. Are there any other good detective or mystery novels that use post-2000s (or, better yet, post-2010) New York accurately? [more inside]

My wife & I are playing in a charity scrabble tournament this weekend, called "Scrabble for Cheaters." Basically, players can "buy cheats" based on how much money they raised, and one of the cheats is to use a word from any other language.
