The sand in an old-ish hourglass no longer drains from the top section to the bottom section and, thus, is failing to perform its physics-sanctioned time-counting duties and responsibilities. I suspect moisture in the glass. Any ideas on what I can do to remove moisture from the inside of an hourglass or how I can otherwise repair this glass of the hour? [more inside]
After having gone through cancer and mental illness together, the love of my life and I are on the verge of splitting up for good. How can I best try to salvage the relationship? Details below. [more inside]
As I was recently reminded, a few years ago I thought I broke a rib, went to the Dr. , was prescribed medicine, and got an X-Ray, in that order. I never heard the results of the X-ray, so never officially confirmed that the rib was actually broken. Do you think it was? [more inside]
Had a blocked sewer this morning. Plumbers unblocked it, charged $900 for the unblocking and CCTV investigation. The camera showed a large hole at one section of the (clay) pipe, and tree roots at another point. The plumber says the whole pipe should be replaced, and that it can't be relined. This would involve disconnecting the bathroom plumbing, jackhammering up 2x4m of concrete, moving the hot water cylinder which is currently in the way, putting in new PVC pipes that bypass the old broken one, and repouring concrete, installing inspection hatches this time. Removal of waste included. The quote is $14,250 plus GST. Is this anywhere near what I should expect? [more inside]
My laptop has developed a thing where the 2 key, which had been intermittent for a couple of weeks, now seems to be completely kaput. How to deal with this? If not to fix it, then maybe to cope with it until my next computer? [more inside]
When I was visiting New York twenty years ago as a teenager I stepped on a well-dressed man's flip flop and broke it. He started screaming at me and demanding hundreds of dollars. Thankfully there was a pushy adult around who told him to get lost, that I was a kid and didn't even have hundreds of dollars to give him (which was true). Was this a scam? [more inside]
My dad, after breaking his hip earlier this summer just fell and broke his Femur. He's about to go through surgery again. Help me navigate what to expect for him and the minefields with dealing with difficult family members in this tense and upsetting situation. [more inside]
We just bought a Vizio E550VL LCD TV on Craigslist. We tested it before buying it, of course, and it worked fine; we brought it home and watched an episode of Game of Thrones on it, and it continued to work fine. The next morning when we turned it on, the screen brightness starting flickering badly, and a little while later the screen stopped turning on at all. When we opened it up we found this charred wiring (note blackened housing and brown spots on circuit board.) What should we do? [more inside]
On the medwebs, you're told to seek immediate treatment if skin around a probably broken toe has turned blue or grey. Why is this -- what does it signify that is different from the bruising?
So After very minimal use, my recently bought laptop now won't even power up. When I press power button, nothing happens. It's a Asus x205-ta if that matters. I made arrangement to return it to Amazon. Before I ship the laptop back, what could I do to protect things like my passwords, etc that are presumably still in there? [more inside]
I have a maxtor 1tb external hard drive which is broken - it kinda works but then starts clicking and the playback locks up or the data doesn't transfer. Is there any software that can deal with this and reset the head and try again, and remove as much of the data as possible? Preferably free - I am currently using ubuntu - but anything that works will do.
My formerly very outdoorsy and active Dad, who will soon be 75, broke his leg. The recovery threatens to be very boring for him, and I'd like to keep him entertained and also keep him from driving his new wife bonkers since he can't do projects. Ideas? [more inside]
Last Year my housemate (and good friend) spilt tea on my laptop and it broke. The laptop was about 2 years old and worth $1300.00. At the time he couldn't afford to pay me anything, and as I was low on cash myself I replaced it with cheaper tablet option, worth $450.00. A year has now passed and he is in a better position to pay me back- What do you think is a fair amount given the worth of the 2 year old laptop and the amount I spent replacing it?
Scientifically I'm not sure what is going on but the doctor said I most likely broke a bone in my hand and I have am MRI in a couple days. (The x ray was inconclusive but he is 90 percent sure)I've got pain meds and am trudging along. I'm tring to adjust to my new one hand lifestyle as it is in a cast. [more inside]

Hey All, I think I know the answer to this questions already, but I thought I would throw it out there to you, a trusted audience of my peers. I cracked my toenail on the biggest toe. It looks like someone took a nibble out of it. Nothing hurts, there is no damage to the nail bed. Should I just let it grow out? [more inside]

So I recently moved to San Mateo, CA from Chicago, hurray! Pretty much everything has been great and the move quite smooth. What sucks is that in the move my beloved Panasonic ST60 60 inch was broken, likely during the drive out here. I had moved who packed it up and delivered it to UPack, then moved who unloaded it from there and moved it into my house. Sadly it didn't survive. Now I need to start looking or thinking about a replacement BUT Panasonic stopped making plasma's altogether and I wasn't expecting to have to buy a TV again so soon. What should my next TV be? Sometime in the last 24 hours, my refrigerator (Kirkland Signature by Whirlpool, aka the cheapest fridge you can buy at Costco*) gave up the ghost. The light is still working and it seems that the back panel of the freezer is cold, but the fan is not blowing and the fridge itself is not cold at all. [more inside]
My rice cooker stopped working! It's an old very basic model, and I suspect it's easy to fix - but I never fixed anything before! [more inside]
I've just bought my first home and moved into my new place (hooray!). I've never had a dishwasher before and as such, I haven't used it once during my first week of living in the new place. This weekend though, I ran the dishwasher for the first time and urgh, once the cycle was finished, I opened the door and the dishwasher was still full of water :( What is the likely cause and can I fix it myself? Also, all appliances in the house were supposed to be in working order.... do I have any leg to stand on in asking the seller about this?
So, I have a PC. It was custom built by some guy but is nothing special. Runs XP, has a hard drive, etc. Earlier today I used it for 2-3 hours and then shut it down. It emitted a serious melting plastic smell that stunk up half the house, and it froze on the shutdown screen--the mouse would not move. I freaked out and unplugged it. There was no smoke or anything visible, and there were no sounds of any sort. I opened it up and nothing looks amiss. I started it up just now and it works fine. No smells, all the fans work fine. I'm actually using it to post this question. Any idea what could have happened? I'm 99% sure it was the computer emitting the smell--it was definitely localized right there.
So, I'm using Google Chrome and my Facebook has suddenly decided not to work. I've tried clearing my browser history with emptying the cache and cookies (that terminology is a bit beyond me). But it still won't work. It looks like the words below, but in a blue font on a white screen. I've tried it on Internet Explorer and it works fine (Changing internet browsers is not an answer I'm willing to consider here). Can someone help me fix it please. [more inside]
I dropped my iPhone 4S a couple weeks ago and broke the screen. Insert humorous anecdote here. Can anyone describe their experience with 3rd-party replacement glass versus "official" replacement screen glass? Bonus points for specific locations in suburban Boston where I could get this fixed on a while-you-wait basis, since I'll be in Boston-ish over the next few days. Thanks.
There is this guy I've liked for the past four years. I'm 25 and he's 33. We were always good friends, very attracted to each other, but he always told me he never wanted a relationship, not just with me, but with anyone. But I always had very deep feelings for him, he was the first man I ever had sex with, and he cared for me a lot too; even got a little jealous when I had a boyfriend. Anyway, he's been seeing this girl for a few months that he told me tonight he's really serious about her. It's killing me. He said the reason me and him never got together was because of timing, our age difference, and the fact that we are at different stages in life. He said he sees a better match with her than with me. He said I'm amazing and it has nothing to do with me, but this whole scenario killed me. With me, it was casual hanging out, and with her, it's nice vacations, meeting his family, spending holidays together. He also came back to me once over the summer while they were broken up, but went back to her. It hurts so much to see him giving to someone else what I always wanted. How can I feel better? :(

I have an old Palm Pre with a very shattered screen that probably doesn't power on anymore (I haven't gone near it since it shattered). What is the best way to recycle it? I live in Seattle and the city recycling does not accept e-waste. I know there are a number of places you can mail cell phones to be recycled but I'm very unclear on if they accept non-working cell phones with broken screens, etc. Anyone have personal experience with any of these services?

My freezer (the one that's the top portion of my fridge) stopped working and I've called an applliance repair person. I just pulled the fridge from the wall and I noticed styrofoam (2 pieces) wedged behind the coils. The coils look like this. I am pretty sure they were there (as packing material?) when the fridge was new and the previous home owner did not remove them. I can't imagine there should be styrofoam wedged in there! Should there be? [more inside]

I'm on Verizon, I have no warranty, started a contract in July w/ a Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4G Android Phone. I was a n00b and walked into my car really hard the other night and it was in my pocket. The screen now will barely turn on, the touch screen is cracked. The touchscreen is unusable. I cannot dial or even use the phone. A google nexus will be $299. What are my options? The phone itself, I kind of hate, the OS is nice but charging has always been an issue and it dies pretty quickly. I need ideas on either should I replace it? (With what and how much?) I don't want to renew as Verizon has had terrible quaility and I want to dump them in 18 months and go back to Virgin Mobile (I even have a phone for it). Should I foot the $350 ETF and switch back to Virgin? Cost to fix it? Other options?

I have noticed that in most portable gun cases which are hard plastic on the outside with a foam core inside there seems to be pieces of shiny glass embedded in the foam. I have only noticed this in gun case foam not other types of foam for example, the foam inside couch cushions or bedding. Why would they put glass inside gun case foam?
I've broken my favorite piece of a jewelry -- a solid jade bangle. It dropped on the bathroom floor and broke into 2 pieces (pics 1 2). When I put the two pieces together it doesn't look too bad (i.e. I think it was a "clean break" with no additional tiny pieces missing), so I'd like to fix it. Can I do this myself and will it look not horrible? What type of stuff could I use to glue the pieces together? If the answers to the previous questions are no and none, do you know of someone (jeweler/stone person) who could fix it in the DC/MD area? [more inside]
