Two of my life dreams are to speak Portuguese fluently and to learn to surf. VOILA~~ I was invited for a professional exchange in Florianopolis, Brazil, and am over the moon! Can you help me 1) decide which months to arrive 2) make an initial plan for housing and transport, and 3) suggest volunteer conservation efforts for my partner?

We're travelling to Brazil in late May. Where would you recommend for hotels in Itataia and Paraty? Is a pousada a good option? Plus questions about timing, driving, Salvador de Bahia.

I'm trying to understand the meaning of the phrase "te aprochega." I have seen it used as part of a parade celebrating southern Gaucho pride in Porto Alegre, near Uruguay. I understand that the "te" is kind of like our "y'all" because it's this southern vernacular that's not used so much up north, but what does the "approaching" part mean? I've only been able to find references on the Web to "te aprochega living," in the sense that someone might say "Gangnam Style."

A week or 2 ago, I came across a photo gallery on imgur.com of photos of Brazilian military police using APCs and bulldozers to tear down favela housing in preparation for the World Cup and Olympics. I think I found it via a link from mefi, or possibly reddit. I have searched both sites for it, and done some googling, but I just can not find it. Hope me?

RVing to Rio De Janeiro -- is this even possible?
We are experienced RVers, with nearly a decade of fulltime North American trekking under our belts. Closing ceremony of the Olympics got us talking about 2016 in Rio, then somebody said, "Why don't you take your RV down there?"

I have a ticket to travel from SFO to São Paulo tomorrow. Sadly, I just discovered
I need a visa. There is no time to apply and the consulate is closed tomorrow so I wonder if I should just get on the plane and see what happens. If they turn me away in São Paulo what will they do? Put me on the next plane? Or will the airline not even board me without the visa? (I have a connecting flight in O'Hare.)

Hi well traveled mefites! My husband and I are taking the overnight bus from Lencois to Salvadore tonight and it arrives at something like 5am. We have ~6 hrs to kill in Salvadore before we catch our flight to Rio. Are there any places we can go to hang out early morning? I'm guessing the Market isn't open that early but maybe there's a restaurant that's open 24 hrs or a section of town that's nice in the early morning maybe.

I'm not the first to ask this type of question, but my situation is a bit unique. I have 10 days, starting at Iguazu Falls and flying out of Buenos Aires. My original plan was to travel down to Uruguay for a few days and then take the ferry over to Bs. As (for at least 4 days). I've recently learned about Salta, and it sounds really cool. Is it worth taking the long bus ride there and back down to Bs. As. or should I just let it go and head to Uruguay?

Greetings, internet users! I need the best Brazilian movies you know. I've seen A Deriva, City of God, Black Orpheus, and none of the rest. What am I missing? Criteria are loose; basically, set in Brazil, people speaking Portuguese, and what you, O wise metafilterians, have judged to be worthy. Obrigado in advance!

I want to work in Brazil. I speak fluent Portuguese (learned in Mozambique long story), am currently employed at a great job (government track for four years- Hill staff but I'm looking for something new). I don't want to just do teaching at a school, etc. I'm looking for something a bit different- maybe working in a communications firm or the tourism industry. Maybe I am wrong for putting off teaching in a school but it just doesn't seem like my thing.
