My wife has been told if she wants to be promoted she's coming to the mothership. That mothership is in Westford, MA. Now we have to find a place to live. But I can't find the suburbs. Not like where we're from in Santa Clara, CA. [more inside]
Searching "direct flights" from Boston to Lisbon turns up vague references and a Boston Globe article from two years ago (http://www.boston.com/travel/blog/2013/04/new_flights_bet.html). I know some people who have flown this route in the past, but neither Google Flights nor any other travel site can actually show those flights. Was this route discontinued? Does any other airline still fly BOS-LIS direct?
First time in Boston and going to go see a Red Sox game this weekend. Flying into Logan, staying at a hotel in Woburn (very close to the Anderson Regional Transportation Center,) and will be going to Fenway on Friday. What is the best way to go? [more inside]
Can you recommend a good therapist in the Somerville/Cambridge area? Near Union Square or Harvard Square a bonus. [more inside]
Leaving for Boston in 7 hours. Should I drive Vegas to Albuquerque or Vegas to Denver? Driving a small 2 seater if that matters. Trying to avoid bad weather. Leaving at 8am Vegas time. Won't drive after dark. Any tips on best route to Cambridge would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I am learning to tap dance as an adult. I am in the Boston area. I need advice. [more inside]
I have a new (awesome) job in Watertown, MA. My new challenge is figuring out how to do a move quickly, and without too much misery, and then how to have an awesome life. Questions inside, about housing, commuting, awesome things to check out, and a few other details. [more inside]
I'm vegetarian and have a hereditary sensitivity to alliums (onion, garlic, leeks, etc.) Unfortunately I can't identify onion/garlic by taste, so when I go out to eat with my boyfriend I mostly resign myself to feeling sick for the next 24 hours or so. What are some restaurants in the Boston area that serve food I might be able to eat safely? [more inside]
I'm playing Costard in a production of Love's Labours Lost. He's a lower class character among royalty. A bright guy, but ignorant of their ways. I want to attempt a Southie accent, and I'm looking for help. So far I've re-watched Good Will Hunting, The Fighter, and Ted, and have googled "how to do a Boston accent". I'm looking for additional advice from a Bostonian beyond the basics, but ideally, a phonetic transcription or recording of Costard's lines would really help me out. I've included the lines below. I will be in Boston next Saturday and Sunday. I would like to eat delicious mid-priced food, visit bookstores and museums, see beautiful local features and possibly shop for accessories. I would also like to ride the T, because I love the T, at least when it's running. What do you recommend? [more inside]

Plans were made long ago for my almost-four year old child and myself to follow my husband to Boston while he presents a paper at a meeting. We intended to stay at the hotel with him and sightsee while he attends meetings all day for several days. Unfortunately, I sprained my ankle three weeks ago and am still on crutches with a CAM/ walking boot. [more inside]

I just moved to Medford, MA for a job. What are some (preferably free or inexpensive) things I can do on evenings and weekends? [more inside]
What the hell left this print on a piece of snow by our front door? (Boston area.)
This is the first year for my son to not be at daycare over the summer and I need suggestions for good day camps around Boston. We live in north of the city, and I work in Cambridge. My son will be 6 in June and he likes games, books, legos, sports, animals, swimming, standard kids stuff. Searching on the web just provided too many options and I'd love to get some firsthand accounts of where is good! Thanks!

Before Thanksgiving, construction crews working on the Massachusetts State House discovered a time capsule placed there in 1795. It was opened last night at a press conference. Will the contents be on display? [more inside]
I recently finished reading the weightlifting program Starting Strength and would like to try to follow it this year. However, I'm in pretty bad shape for a 26-year-old man and I have a bunch of bad habits. Given this, how should I prepare to follow Starting Strength? For instance: How should I gain flexibility beforehand, if necessary? How should I look for a good trainer and a good gym? If you've been in my situation, what worked and didn't work for you? [more inside]
I'll be in Boston with my kids for one day (two nights) in February. They're ages 8 and 12. Too old for the Children's Museum, too young to be set free to wander on their own. What should we do? [more inside]
Can you recommend any unusual restaurants in the Boston area? [more inside]
Last night as I was closing the shades I noticed cold air coming in and discovered what I think is a fairly recent gap between the wooden window sill and the vinyl windows. The gap is letting in quite a lot of air, and I am trying to figure out a) what caused it and b) if this is something we can fix (temporarily) ourselves. [more inside]
I've had a lot of pad thai around here, and pretty much all of it has been mediocre - kind of bland and flavorless. In comparison, I've had mind-meltingly delicious pad thai in Thailand (Chiang Mai and Koh Tao) that was bursting with sweet and sour and salty flavors all at once. I particularly remember the sweet cane sugar mixing with the sour tamarind in an intense, lovely way. Where can I get really really good, authentic pad thai in the Boston area? Ideally that would deliver to Davis Square. [more inside]

I'd like to purchase an antique map (or a good reproduction) as a Christmas present, and I'm having trouble figuring out where to shop. [more inside]
Where can I hold a public meeting for about 25-35 attendees in Greater Boston, with parking? Our group sometimes has attendees drive in from other states, so the usual suspects of city library branches or community centers are often a big pain for folks that need to find parking. Are there free meeting spaces that are near the T for transit users, but with easy-ish parking for car users? This is not for government or political organizing use, rather a meetup around a shared interest. Thank you!
A group of us will be in town the first weekend in December. Going out in unfamiliar cities is tricky. Where do all the cool queer kids party the first weekend of the month? And by kids I mean 25-45 year olds, 90s hip hop / top 40 /songs with lyrics you probably know loving types, possibly but not necessarily hipsters who hate lining up and don’t love paying cover. Looking for a fun, unpretentious bar to drink and dance, with an approachable crowd. [more inside]

I have two kids (5 & 8) who are very excited about Halloween, but we are going to need to spend the evening of the 31st driving fro Philadelphia to Boston. I would like to stop at a couple of places on the way for them to do some Trick-or-Treating (yes, they will be in costume in the car - sorceress and cobra). So, I would love suggestions for some neighborhoods/streets that would be good places to trick or treat. Ideally in CT off of the Hutchinson River Parkway, Merritt Parkway, or I-84; or else off of the MassPike. [more inside]
Visiting Boston this weekend, and asked my friends to take me to see MIT and Harvard, but they haven't been there either. What is there to see or do that'll mean having a good time? [more inside]

In a 2-unit converted house in greater Boston, with the owner/landlord living upstairs, is the etiquette for the first-floor renter (me) to simply put my trash in outside cans/recycling bins as needed, and expect my landlord to take them to the curb on trash day? Or am I responsible for moving 'my own' trash to the sidewalk? [more inside]
I'll be in Boston tomorrow for a little bit, but without a car. That makes Microcenter hard-ish to get to, so I'm looking to the hive mind to steer me to someplace between South Station, Government Center, and the Back Bay that would have decent options for about $100 (preferably less). Where is a good place, in or near Boston, for a early October getaway? [more inside]
I'm getting married in Boston next month. We'd like to rent a karaoke machine instead of doing the standard DJ/dance thing. I know that many regard DoReMi Karaoke the best place in Boston, but I called them yesterday and they said their rental karaoke machines are out of order. They asked me to call back closer to the wedding date because they don't know how quickly they'll be getting them fixed, or even if they want to. Uh oh, I don't have any backup options! MeFi Bostonians, I need your help! [more inside]
Cambridge, MA's Alewife MBTA station: how much does a monthly parking pass cost? The MBTA's vendor site has all the clarity and customer service that you'd expect-- I need to register and provide a credit card number before they'll tell me the price and I just want a number. Thanks!
I moved into my new apartment on Sept 1st. Today, I received a "shut off notice" from the gas company (National Grid in Boston) stating that my unit has an unpaid balance of over $100 as of 8/29, and that the account will be going to collections. This is my first apartment - what should I do, AskMefi? Pay down the balance? Inform my landlord?
(Posting on behalf of a friend): I was convicted of a DUI in March 2014, and am trying to pick up the pieces. I need to pay for an SR-22 which is insurance on my license. If I do not pay for this insurance my license will lapse. The policy is less expensive if I also insure a vehicle but I will not need a car in the coming months and cannot afford the payments. I need help figuring out if it would be smarter to not pay for any insurance (letting my license lapse), to sell the car and use the profits to pay the SR-22, or to just keep the car (though I really do not want to). I need a professional in the greater Boston area to help me set up a project management system for myself AND stick to it. I can't do this on my own. (Is this a life coach? A personal organizer? An executive coach? What job title I should be searching for? I already have a therapist. I want some kind of organization specialist.) [more inside]
How might I go about building a (big, cooperative) house in Boston? [more inside]
For my own personal reasons, I would like to move to Boston. The one obvious catch: I need to make money in order to do so. I'm in software support. It's a small company, so only one support tier before issues go to engineering. Lots of .NET and SQL Server work. I've been at it a few years. I have no idea how my skillset would measure up in a big city full of some of the brainiest people on the planet. Can I survive and thrive in Boston? [more inside]
As a side trip to a New England-a-Palooza vacation, my partner is trying to get to this conference in Rutgers NJ. Are there sensible ways to get from Hartford, Manchester (NH), or Springfield (MA) to there? [more inside]
I have two pairs of old glasses I really like, and want new lenses for them. Is there anywhere in Boston that will give me a good deal on them? Single vision, weak prescription, polycarbonate. I could probably be interested in adding the first AR option. Costco is not an option. Walmart is $79, but takes several weeks. Where is the best place to have my new prescription filled?
I'm a recent Camberville transplant from a place that was more in the "trees that happen to have nearby houses" department rather than the "houses that happen to have nearby trees" department. I'm looking for pleasant places for, say, 3-10 mile rambles where I can forget for a bit that I am not cut out for city life. A few additional constraints within. [more inside]
BostonFilter: Quick! I have a Zipcar reservation from 10am to 1pm today, and the appointment I rented it for has been canceled. Since I'm eating the cost either way, I want to do something with the reservation, but I'm short on ideas. What should I do that's either useful or fun for someone who rarely has access to a car?
