Jorges Luis Borges - just read everything and nothing and I quite liked it. Recommend some of his poetry and short stories? Im looking to pick up a couple books so multiple suggestions would be great. pretend that I can only read three of his books (collections, anthologies etc) and then i wont be allowed to read another word of his. which three would it be?

from what Ive read, bad translations of his have done a serious disservice to his work so good translations would be nice.

In a conversation consisting entirely of English speakers, how should I pronounce the name Jorge Luis Borges? I skimmed this previous thread, but it was hard to find a consensus there, and this particular case wasn't mentioned but comes up frequently for me.

I tend to pronounce it like the Spanish (I speak Spanish decently), but I sometimes feel awkward doing so. But pronouncing Borges so it rhymes with "gorgeous" sounds really goofy to me, and I don't know how else one could pronounce Jorge.

Is there a standard English pronunciation for his name?

I'm looking for maps "the same scale as the Empire." Both Jorge Luis Borges and Lewis Carroll describe fictional 1:1 scale maps in which the map is as vast as what it represents.

What other 1:1 maps can be found in literature (or the real world, for that matter)? I'd also be happy if you point me towards other outlandish maps on par with the 1:1 map. Thanks.

Does anyone come close to Borges in the field of very short fiction?

Has anyone written and published very brief, dense prose works akin to Borges' ficciones, and are they any good? I'm not really fussed about style or content, but other than Bolesław Prus, I can't think of anyone else who has succesfully used the very short form (and he went on a bit, comparatively speaking).

To clarify: epigrams, vignettes and extremely short fiction (like Hemingway's For sale: baby shoes. Never worn.) don't count. And I'm not sure about 'flash fiction' which, in my experience, tends to be overly concerned with squeezing the usual elements of a short story into a shorter word count, though that sort of thing might count if it can bear the weight of a comparison to Borges... if you've read him, you'll know what I'm after, I suppose.

I'm looking for an English translation of Borges online. I'm subtitling a documentary on Borges (Spanish --> English). There are two snippets of poems read aloud. I could of course translate the poetry myself, BUT I would much prefer to go with an authoritative translation that's probably out there somewhere.

I tried sneaking a peak at an Amazon book, but it didn't have the part I wanted. An online resource would be nice in case I come across this again. I know that might be tricky because of copyright, though, so if someone has it in book form and wants to help me out, that's great, too.

The first snippet is from "Fundación Mítica de Buenos Aires" and reads:

Vinieron a fundarme la patria.

The other is from "La Plaza San Martín" and reads:

. . . la tarde entera se había remansado en la plaza,
serena y sazonada,
bienhechora y sutil como una lámpara,
clara como una frente,
grave como un ademán de hombre enlutado.
Todo sentir se aquieta
bajo la absolución de los árboles . . .

On behalf of a friend, though it actually sounds like an interesting question and I think I'd like to know too: Could you put up something asking about whether there's a real-world source/derivation for the words "hron" and "hronir" used in Borges' "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius"?

Irma/Mana records? They just played this track again, so I emailed the station and got the reply Children Dreams - Traditional Lullabies from Around the Globe. There's an image and track listing here and the album is listed on various sites. There's no spanish track, so I'm guessing it was the brazilian one (Bambalalao). Now I need to find the company that issued the compilation to ask who recorded it. I don't think it's this IRMA (they don't list the CD in any catalagoue, as far as I can tell and the style seems very different). So I've hit a dead end. Where now? [mi] i'll try getting hold of a copy (it's not trivial/quick buying things over the net from s america) and also look round the shops in santiago. but if anyone can turn up an email address for the label, that would be great.

also, does anyone know the brazilian lullaby in question? what i heard certainly could be a lullaby, and it's possible it was brazillian rather than spanish, but i'd like confirmation. do the words refer to dead people living in the countryside? was there a hit in brazil some time ago with a fairly "modern" rendition of this (trip-hop ish)?

estes muertos viven en el campo - my local radio station played a song with these lyrics (pretty repeptitive, woman's voice). but google turns up nothing. i guess i have something wrong (surely every lyric ever is on the 'net?). any suggestions? the station plays a pretty eclectic mix of songs, but given the location (chile) and language (spanish), i guess this could be a local track (if so, i want to know even more, because it sounded very different to the usual stuff from round here). and as a (only vaguely related) bonus link for those who've read this far (and don't yet have the album) - suba's sao paulo confessions are even more wonderful than everyone says.
