I had a book (not a picture book) as a kid that was titled something like 'The Greatest Man in the World' or 'The Greatest Man that Ever Lived', and it was a collection of stories that were like fairy tales, or fables. [more inside]

I was asked in France what's the first chapter book an American child reads on his or her own, and I didn't know whether there is one such book. Do you know of one or have any idea of the most likely titles?

What children's book had one of the main characters, a boy, collect his spit in a bottle? It seems to me that at some point he tripped on the stairs and broke the bottle. I remember being utterly grossed out by this. I seem to recall it being a sort of a dramatic book, rather than light.
As a side note, there may have been a bully in the book who was obsessed with airplanes, and possibly a brother and a sister who were obsessed with kingfishers, although it's entirely possible I'm describing three separate books.

I wrote down a story that I made up and used to tell to my daughters at bedtime. I think it's really good, and that others would like it too. It would be my dream come true to have it published.
