I'm looking for blogs and resources on simplicity and frugality. But wait - there's more! [more inside]
I have an abiding interest in obscure and small-press feminist and queer science fiction. I also have a collection of such material and some knowledge about it. How best to share this with the world? [more inside]
What are some great art & photography resources? With absurdity, originality, variety, and quality? [more inside]
So I finally have had to concede that What Would A Nerd Wear, my long-time style bible, is long gone and never coming back. Is anyone else on the great wide internet doing something similar for the modren era? If you, too, are a nerd who is trying to learn how to dress yourself, what are your go-tos? [more inside]
To try to structure some irritating obsessions into halfway constructive output, I want to a. get a blog, and b. make some fanvids. I need basic rundowns of how to do these basic things fairly basically, in terms adapted to the meanest understanding. [more inside]
Could anyone recommend a good site for real time stock market news? Immediate news, if possible. Today the market started out down, then turned around and is heading up like gangbusters. I'd like to find the news that precipitated that turnaround.
With a lot of changes happening in my life, I'd like to keep an online diary of sorts. I know nothing about blogging. But I'd like to anonymously post all kinds of things. [more inside]
I'm looking to redesign my personal research site and I'm thinking to use a blogging platform such as WordPress; however, I can't seem to find any good, clean and modern templates. In particular, I would like to add sections for my publications, recent news, scripts I have written, and my upcoming talks / presentations. Does anyone have suggestions for a robust platform and any themes that I could use for the site? Thanks!
I have been getting into quilting lately, and I love looking at pictures of beautiful quilts out there that other people have made. Do you have any quilt blogs that you follow and love? [more inside]
I have two different primary accounts under two different email addresses on tumblr simply because I didn't understand how it worked when I set it up. This is an extreme hassle for me when attempting to quickly post content to one of the other back and forth. [more inside]
I've been a blogger, off and on, since "weblog" first became a word, but the way blogs and communities are built these days confounds me. I miss tight-knit, ye olde internet communities but am no longer sure how they are built or nourished in a noisier, more commercialized web. I need opinions. [more inside]
I am starting a blog using a very simple wordpress template. But, Wordpress cuts off the post so that users see only the beginning. In addition, it is not clear that there is more content to follow. Is this a theme issue? I need the whole post (including photos) to show on the main page. This seems so basic. I tried googling but no luck.
The Wordpress blog that I manage is being attacked from Tor nodes. Is there anything that I can do about it? [more inside]
I can't take this any longer. I am going to start a blog with weekly posts highlighting the poor, misleading graphics in the newspaper I read. To do this I need a scanner for linux and a blog host. [more inside]
I have a Wordpress blog, and I want to get rid of a large number (200+) of old, junky blog posts. They're clogging up my archives and search results, they get virtually no traffic, and they're poorly done and embarrassing. There is no question they need to go. The question is, should I delete and redirect them, or just noindex them? [more inside]
Now that Just Bento is not really updating any longer, what's the best bento blog aimed at adults, not kids, and not at showing off the adorable widgets you manage to buy to make your lunch special, but just a focus on bento staples, fillers and techniques for plotting out lunches in a bento style. A focus on vegetarian is best, but not essential.
I have a professional blog hosted on my own domain. Spry is my domain host and I use Wordpress to publish the content. This evening after some time away I tried to log into my wordpress admin dashboard to add a new post to my blog but am unable to log in - the browser just gets stuck on the url and the page doesn't load and shows as a blank white page. My friend and I are starting a gaming blog/website. We've been trying to think of a good name. We're both females, and would like to incorporate that in the name somehow, but not super overtly. Do you have any ideas? [more inside]
I've been using WordPress for over 10 years to manage my blog and my site... [more inside]
My partner and I have decided to give each other one Saturday off a month from parenting our toddler to pursue a personal project. I’ve always been interested in the vernacular of domestic architecture and would like to move on from my years of walking the streets taking photos of local houses and keeping them on my computer. My curiosity will not be sated - I need to get inside those same houses and take photos and I’d like to share them with a like-minded audience. [more inside]
Looking for showcases of great photography on the web! Specifics inside. [more inside]
I'm hoping to someday change careers into a more writing-focused field. The advice for this is always "start a blog and join Twitter." I would like to do both of these things, but I have so many interests, and such difficulty thinking about how any of them would translate into a blog, that I'm stuck at the screening phase. How to pick one? [more inside]
I've had a moderately popular niche blog since 2006, and hoder's article got me a bit nostalgic for the olden times. I blog in a field with few serious bloggers - there are others who post periodic podcasts and other media, but few consistent long-form writers. My blog discusses the controversial issues in my field while advertising my services as a consultant (I don't display any paid ads). Is there hope for thoughtful content these days? And how do I get heard? [more inside]
Reaching out to the hive mind to help me name my blog - I am doing a masters in coaching and mentoring and trying to carve out a niche for myself working with research students/researchers/academics - this is the bulk of my "clients" at the moment (in inverted commas as all of that is unpaid and part of the training). I really enjoy working with this group as an ex-academic myself and wanted to share some of that enthusiasm via a blog but can't come up with anything that sounds right. Help?! Some further requirements below. [more inside]
I used to be on LJ and loved it, making online and RL friends until I began editing myself to silence because my ex was not keen on what I wrote etc. Now I'd like to talk to people again but how's that done in 2015? Twitter, Tumblr, Myspace? I want to be able to write short random posts, but what I miss most is the interaction and sense of community, reading a group of friends and having conversations in comments and messages. Facebook feels like shouting across a mall.
This may be a reach, but I'm looking for a half-remembered website. The main design elements that I can recall are that the page is mostly black and white with a header that has something like a splashed ink illustration of a crow on it. I think that it's a blog, either about metal (the music) or fantasy/sci-fi writing, but I could just be conflating other things together. The crow is the important thing.
I'm putting together a genealogy website. Half of it is about my personal family history so my own relatives can look at it. The other half is about genealogy research itself, things of interest to other genealogists in general. I'd like a cool, fairly unique name for this website. Maybe a phrase? Any clever suggestions? Thanks!
Hi mefites! I'm looking for blogs or websites that post interesting news or tidbits on science and anything science-related. I'm sure there's tons out there, but I want the metafilter-curated collection. [more inside]
After running a successful food/lifestyle blog for a year with a friend, I'm branching out to do my own thing. I'm having trouble pinning down a name and after thinking of nothing but names for the past week, my brain is mush. [more inside]
I've been writing podcast reviews (link to site in my profile if needed) for the last few months. There's no shortage of resources for improving my writing (which I frequently use) but where can I find sources to help me write better reviews, specifically? [more inside]
I run a website. I try to get other people involved in writing, and many start out excited to participate, but that interest drops off. I'm not sure how to "nicely bug" people to encourage that community participation. Help? [more inside]
The Lore thread reminded me of something else from that era of the web, one of the first group blogs I encountered, and now I am annoyed because I can't remember the name or more details. It was a bunch of interconnected art/tech/media people, mostly based in the SF Bay Area I believe. The name riffed off 'cereal' in some way, but all the keywords are too general to fish anything up out of google. [more inside]
Is there any documentation on how Instapaper's parser handles footnotes? [more inside]
IT are blocking images from Tumblr, and when I post them as links to images hosted on our server, Tumblr uploads them and hosts them anyway. Can I get round this? [more inside]
Two questions, both writing related: 1) For those of you engaged in essay and fiction writing (not academic or research-heavy professional writing), are pen and paper still part of your creative process at all? What is your workflow like?; 2) Will publishing an essay on one's own personal, special interest website (with a potential reach of less than 100) first preclude ever having it accepted for publication (not just linked) in some form or another on an online magazine platform? [more inside]
I have savings, and I hated my job, so I quit to start an unprofessional and NSFW business. The business "failed," and I've been unemployed for almost a year. So, now I need to account for this time on a resume and figure out what to do next. [more inside]
Other than Reddit, Twitter, or Facebook what are good places to cross-post or link to new blog entries, particularly essays on humanistic topics like philosophy, literature, and so on?
My friend and I are starting an academic blog. We will be posting equations and code snippets (mostly MATLAB), and are looking for a blogging platform that will allow us to enter them easily and display them nicely. Do you have any suggestions on what we should use?
Help me set-up my first personal site in under 24 hours. [more inside]
I read a personal blog post maybe five years ago arguing from a philosophical point that no software should "die" but should persist, i.e. restarts should be seamless or unnecessary. It was written with particular regard to Firefox extensions although it also mentioned Apache. It was most likely by someone in the Mozilla-sphere (read: syndicated on Planet Mozilla), but they may have linked to a piece by a general high-profile tech blogger. Searching for obvious keywords is drawing blanks, can anyone identify or locate the blog post in question for me?
Right now, my long-established business web site has a blog as an integral part of the home page. I've heard that, for SEO purposes, it's better to have the blog as a separate standalone URL with (obviously) links to the business web site, as well as links from and to the business Facebook and Google Plus pages. What are your opinions, hive mind? Have at it. And thanks as always!
Basically I now work for a decentralized company and I want somewhere for all of us to post our general creative ideas to be shared. Like a blog. But NOT open to the world, just to the people IN the company. AND where everyone has posting abilities. Is such a thing possible?
I'm about to rebrand my blog (and give it some activity). It's on WordPress.com, which seems the blogging platform most recommended to previous askers, and it's the one I chose when starting said blog, but since I'm a very special snowflake, I'd like to have that perception challenged and see if there's something else out there that's better for me. My wife works in Corporate Treasury and has been considering creating a blog that discusses the intricacies of that career. One reason she wants to do this is because she cannot seem to locate any similar blogs or forums on this topic. So is anyone out there in any way connected to this realm and, if so, do you have any recommendations for her new endeavor? Also, if there are some noteworthy resources you think might be helpful, feel free to post them. Much thanks.
Should I blog even though I don't know anybody who blogs, and would start with zero followers, and not even sure if people would like to see what I have to offer? [more inside]
Asking for a friend: "Looking for the lost link to a music blog (on Blogspot, maybe?), called Something City. It had lots of obscure out of print music available for download. All kinds of music, mostly old stuff from exotic places (Africa, SE Asia), but I found some stuff by Archie Shepp there too."

I have received requests to repost my blog articles, that I write for the explicit purpose of generating commercial interest in my company. The blog is only a couple months old, so I haven't done tons of thinking about the various issues that can come up. These requests are coming from people who can easily be competitors or collaborators, as we work in the same space offering similar services. [more inside]
Before I discovered MetaFilter, my go-to site for a collection of interesting Web links was a blog on MSNBC.com. I can't remember the name of it, nor its curator (who discontinued the blog some years ago). Does anyone remember this blog or its author's name?
