Does anyone know of a voice dial service (like GOOG-411) that works in the US for residential as well as business numbers, on landline phones? It's for a blind person with limited mobility, so the service needs to actually place the call for the user, and not require any dialing or button-pushing beyond the initial call.

When and why did it become the convention that blind people would wear dark glasses? Would the purpose be to hide the eyes or to act as a signifier of blindness? Is it something that is done less these days and what are the reasons why?

I am looking for tips on how to move house with a cat (I'm moving tomorrow!). It's going to be a 4 hour journey in a car, with a cat who hates traveling (she breaks out of a her secure cat-box) and gets very stressed (cries and pants). Also, I want to try to address her behaviour issue, if anyone has the time to look inside and read her background info (sorry for the lengthy notes). [more inside]

Does a person born deaf blind experience dreams?
My curiousity has always wondered if a person who is born deaf blind has the ability to experience dream? What would dreaming be like if you never have been able to see or hear anything around you. Is a dream a purely visual thing for us sighted ones? Any research sites or personal stories on this topic?

Deaf-blind question. I ask only out of curiosity, but google turns up academic stuff that's above my head. How are deaf-blind children taught? What level of communication can they attain? Does being mute make a difference? Do we know what life is like inside a mind that has only touch/taste/smell senses of the world?
I'm thinking mainly of those who are born deaf and blind.

On Monday I have to cover my seven year old daughters left eye with a patch for eight weeks. The idea is to strengthen her right eye -- currently 20/300 -- in the advent that later in life she should damage her good one. Insurance, so to speak. Any thoughts on making life more palatable for a temporarily blind child ?
