Does anyone know of an online equivalent to a bicycle swap meet? I bought an old tandem bike for $100 and need to replace some rusted parts (handlebars, cranks, etc), but don't want or need new parts (nor do I think I'd find them easily). I've checked e-bay, but no luck this time. I guess my ideal would be an e-bay just for bicycles. Does such a thing exist?

My organization is interested in providing a small fleet of bicycles for employees to use for meetings, workday errands, etc. The only reason *not* to do this that comes to mind is liability—although we could provide waivers, right? One way or the other, I haven't yet found examples of other companies doing this. What do you know about it?

I got hit by a car while I was cycling, and reported it to the police. Now the other party is offering to "settle it personally", leaving insurance companies and police out. Is this legal, and is it advisable? [more inside]

I'm in Toronto. A bike I want is in Berkeley, CA. I do not know the seller and he refuses to ship (anywhere). I have a relative in Fresno who does not drive but if the bike can get to him, he can ship it to me. Is there a service or something that I can pay to either ship the bike to me or deliver it to my relative? Ridiculous details inside. [more inside]

My 20+ year old low end racing Trek bicycle is coming back to me. I need to restore it to working condition. I'm going to go to the bicycle kitchen to do the work but before I do that I'd like to read a bit. What books can a mechanically naive cyclist read to learn about tuning a bike?

I am a full time college student right now and have just gotten a job at a bicycle shop. The problem is, I have no idea what I am being paid. When I inquired about employment I was initially turned down, saying that there was not any positions currently available. After some pleading and explaining my passion for bikes the manager entertained the idea. During the interview he asked me when I was looking to make. This question somewhat blind-sided me as I didn't want to give too high of a number and leave a bad taste in his mouth or worse, lose the job. I told him that pay was really not important to me and just working with bikes and learning was the most important aspect of the job. Long story short I got the job but we have yet to discuss salary [more inside]

Jitensha-Filter: I fantasize about moving to Japan to teach English, when I retire from my computer career. To achieve this end, I've earned my TESL certificate, but so far, I'm just a repeat tourist with lots of Nihon travel experience -- but always on foot. Part of the fantasy involves riding a bicycle over there -- and not one of their clunky no-speeds, but my bicycle. What's involved when a gaijin brings in his bicycle? I'm guessing it's not as easy as retrieving it from checked luggage at Narita, and riding away -- knowing the Japanese, there's regulations to be satisified, in an approved manner. [more inside]

Most kid's bikes are crap. I've looked at the bikes sold in the major chain stores and they are poorly designed and constructed. My 4 year old son rides his 12" bike without training wheels, but he has nearly outgrown it. So I am looking for a well designed and constructed, moderately priced, 16" bicycle that can stand up to the abuse that a 4 year old will put it through, and hopefully be in good enough shape for child number two to use it in a few years.

Learning to ride a bicycle at the age of 30. Yup and I need to do it alone, unfortunately not because of embarassment (quickly offset by benefit) but because none of my friends *gasp* know how to ride one ! I looked for courses in my city with no luck. Anybody ever did so ? Tips, tricks ?

Bicycles. I know nothing about them outside of the obvious 2 wheels and chain part. I need a bike. Not a fancy bike. A sturdy bike. A bike that can handle a wiggly 30+ pound toddler on the back...in a seat, preferably...or maybe something that can be towed behind a bike? Recommendations for bikes? Recommendations for kid seats?

Two-part question about buying a bike. Part the first: I want to get a good quality road or hybrid bike. What's your recommendation for brand and/or model to check out and/or avoid? B) If you're in Toronto, where do you recommend shopping? My price range is C$600-1000 (about max of us$750). If you're not in Toronto, is there an online shop you can recommend for buying and having a bike shipped here? Main purpose of the bike is exercise and will almost exclusively be ridden on city streets. [more] [more inside]

I'll soon have a basement, and be able to bring at least one bike inside for the winter, so I'm wondering: do I want a trainer? If so, do I want rollers, a fan-trainer, a fluid-trainer, a mag-trainer, what? I'm not a racer, I'm just looking for an alternative to spinning classes to keep my lungs in shape.
