I found a dresser on the sidewalk in Brooklyn yesterday, the 30th. I rushed to take it, since it appeared to be of very high quality and, having recently moved, I needed one! Now, I'm paranoid I may have exposed myself to bedbugs - not because of any obvious empirical evidence, but because the risk in New York City is purportedly so high, and the piece could have been thrown out because of an infestation. (It could also have been the casualty of a move.) The only possible visual sign of any infestation is here, in the base of the dresser: http://imgur.com/ARBrX3K This white substance scattered and disappeared when I tried to scoop a bit of it up with some paper. I think it's probably wood shavings from the dresser itself; an extensive search turned up no obvious signs of droppings, shed skins, the things themselves. But this white, salt-like substance does not seem altogether inconsistent with eggs. Should I get this thing out of my apartment immediately?
I have a big fat annoying anxiety-inducing, sleep-disrupting phobia of bedbugs. I'm already doing CBT to limited success; what other avenues should I explore? [more inside]
I've had bedbugs in my apartment. My landlord hired exterminators to treat the place using a heat treatment, so I did all the steps they requested, including washing/drying clothes and keeping them in a plastic bag until you leave the apartment (check) and taking very little with you (check). I'm in the library as I type this and I JUST saw a bedbug crawl across my bag. What can I do to keep my place from getting reinfected? [more inside]
My flatmate has woken up with one or two small, red, itching bites on her legs or back each day for the past week or so. She is extremely distressed, having had a traumatic experience with bed bugs several years ago. Please help me figure out what to do. [more inside]
I like to check out books from my local library branch every week. This weekend, they were closed, with a sign on the door explaining that they were being treated for bedbugs. I'm not sure why kind of treatment they used. How likely is it that the books are now safe to check out? Should I go buy a book at the bookstore instead?
I've been subletting a room for the past six months or so, and am about to move out. Recently I've been feeling like I've been bitten by things during the night. Bed bugs? I don't know, but it seems possible. What is the best option here? I want to do right by the people I've been subletting from, but I also don't want to make a big deal out of something that turns out to be just me being paranoid. And I feel nervous about potential financial ramifications. [more inside]
I encountered bed bugs for the first time and it majorly freaked me out. I travel regularly for work and am curious how other frequent travelers deal with this issue without succumbing to constant anxiety. [more inside]
I'm am currently at the airport on my way home from a hotel that had a bedbugs. What should I do to mitigate the damage? [more inside]
What sort of processes do Goodwill, Salvation Army and other major thrift stores follow to treat donations that might be infected with bedbugs or other pests? This is for a situation where someone has recently had bedbugs and is afraid to go through with some planned donations to charity, but also hates to throw perfectly decent items into the garbage.
I have been storing my beloved drum kit at a friend's house for three years. But now I have room for them in my house, so I'm bringing them home. Yay! Alas, my friend recently went through a bedbug episode. What should I do when I bring my drums home to keep the bedbugs out? [more inside]
Saw this single little bug on the bathroom floor between the tub and toilet last night at 11:30 PM. Is it a bed bug? Should I freak out? [more inside]
I found two of these guys crawling on me during a 2 night hotel stay, but couldnt find any more in the bed, or any other evidence of bedbugs, no bites that i can find.. What do you think? http://imgur.com/a/d0KUP
I live with friends. We have a major infestation of bedbugs. (Cockroaches too, just for added fun.) I worry that all the bedbug oriented websites are trying to sell me snake oil. Tell me how to kill all the bugs short of burning down the entire house.
A friend of mine came over in a panic this morning because she found two strange little bugs in her bed. She captured one and we have photos. What is this insect?
I am in the UK. I get several itchy bites per night, mostly on the back of my neck. I also quite often see tiny flies meandering through the air in my flat. Are these flies likely to be biting me? Photo inside. [more inside]
My fear-driven sister has told me that bedbugs are inevitable in hotels on Long Island. I have a family commitment tomorrow and it would be most convenient to stay in a hotel in Medford. Am I asking for it by staying there? [more inside]
Our 15 year old starter mattress is in a bad way. We have very little funds to spend on a mattress. We've found some in our price range, but also found there is a whole cottage industry of used, refurbished and slightly-bed bug infested mattresses. Is it possible to find something inexpensive but not one of the above? [more inside]
Brushed off weird bugbites once over the summer, just woke up with them again, worried about bedbugs and trying to figure out what to do about it, if anything. [more inside]
The guy who lives in the basement our of shared house brought a second hand mattress into the unit that was infested with bedbugs. The entire house has been heat treated once, and his unit has been heat treated three times. How do we even begin to decide if we need to move out? [more inside]

I have a rash I have been dealing with unsuccessfully for the last four months, and need deciding how to proceed. General interest (well, if you're interested in rashes and bug bites and other matters dermatological), but people who know the Baltimore medical scene are particularly invited to read on. Red, blotchy snowflakes inside. [more inside]

I've been bitten by an unknown bug throughout the week. What are these bites from? (pics inside)! [more inside]
Found a little critter in the bedlinens at the Airbnb place where I'm staying. Entomologists of Mefi, tell me whether to freak out or not. (Please excuse any typos resulting from being on German keyboard.) [more inside]
I am staying in a motel and just found bedbugs in my room...unfortunately, literally crawling on me by the time I noticed! I called the manager and he promptly moved me to a new room, which I will be checking thoroughly in hopes that I can maybe achieve sufficient comfort to sleep tonight (HA). What else should I do, especially to prevent bringing an invasion home with me? [more inside]
I'm just back from staying over at a friend's place. I found a bed bug. My friend suffers from OCD, and they've brought up their fears about bed bugs previously. How do I break it to them without causing a flat spin?
My sister lives in an apartment complex that has routine maintenance checks. She informed me that tomorrow they will be coming through everyones apartments to check filters etc etc. She also told me that they bring a police and their K-9 unit with them to check for bedbugs. I was shocked when she told me this and can't believe that this is even legal to do. How are they able to use the police and their dogs to search for bedbugs? How is this legal?
I think I saw a bed bug on a wall near my bed. What now? [more inside]
My room has bedbugs. My landlord refuses to cover the costs of extermination, on the grounds that they've never had this problem before. Do I push it, or let it go? Complication: my landlord is not actually my landlord. [more inside]
I was in bed, felt something crawling on my forehead, scraped it way with my sheet, and the sheet came back smeared with blood. Am I totally fucked with bedbugs or could it be something else? [more inside]
We will be travelling soon using different hotels I'm not familiar with. Now I do my spot checking for bed bugs. I'm more concerned with clothing. When travelling I hang up as much as I can in the closet and then try to leave everything else in the suitcase. But it's really difficult and I would like to have this stored in bags. What bags do you recommend are best to buy that we can keep everything else in but that they will stay well sealed. Can we leave these bags in hotel drawers? Is a luggage liner suggested? what else should we get? I'm so unclear with the reviews on the internet. I want to do my due diligence and try to be reasonable. Thanks.
Recently moved into a pre-furnished room in NYC and noticed a lone dead bug on the mattress a few days ago. I hope it's not a bedbug, but I can't tell for sure. Someone look at this picture and say it isn't so! Also, that it isn't another species that will be invasive or cause an infestation. [more inside]
How do I prevent getting bed bugs while working in two emergency rooms? this is pretty much the question, but if you like details, there are some inside! [more inside]
I found a single bedbug in a library book. I think I contained it and handled the situation, and should probably not be worrying, since it's been a month and no evidence of bedbugs. I need help determining if I should do anything further, and how to stop worrying and just accept my bedbug-fighting future if that's what's going to happen. [more inside]
[NYC-filter] We definitely have bedbugs - no question - and know that we need an exterminator. We will need to pay for it ourselves. What are some good, discreet, effective (preferably inexpensive) NYC exterminators? And how much do they cost, especially for the size of our infestation? Are there any better steps we can take in the meantime to prepare, minimize the infestation size, and lower our costs? [more inside]
What are the limits to bedbugs? Why isn't every hotel room infested given how tough they are claimed to be? Is there any evidence on the chances of taking bed bugs home from a hotel with you? Will the bedbug infestation rates go ever upwards? Why or why not? Interested in aggregated, rather than anecdotal evidence here. [more inside]
My best pal and I will be road tripping to Austin and New Orleans this July. We've had a bit of trouble finding budget accommodations that don't have 20+ negative reports on the Bedbug Registry -- especially in NOLA. Any hotel/motel/dorm wizards have suggestions? PLUS where should we go in Austin and NOLA to satisfy our many cultural/gastronomic itches? Snowflakes inside! [more inside]
I have some sort of bug infestation in my house and am getting many little bites. What could it be? Here are some things, with a kitty picture. [more inside]
I Pricelined myself into a two nights at a hotel in downtown Chicago. A few seconds later, I thought to check the Bedbug Registry. DANT DANT DAH, it has bedbug reports. Given these reports, help me assess the risk of actually encountering bedbugs, so I can decide whether to just abandoned the money I just paid (~$300) and get another hotel. [more inside]
I'm PERHAPS overly paranoid about renting an apartment. I need some advice from sane, non-traumatized people to make sure I take all necessary precautions while also not rendering myself homeless by default. [more inside]
