What beachy place on the U.S. east coast can I go alone but feel safe?

Looking for hotel or AirBnB recommendations walking distance from a beach. Snowflakes: female going by myself (no travel groups/guides, please); seeking a balance of safety+pleasantness between empty (would feel too unsafe to doze, walk at sunrise) and unpleasantly packed; I don't drive so need paid/free conveyance from airport/train station to hotel/beach/groceries. Affordable beach-area hotel in Sarasota?

Last minute, have to be in Sarasota, FL on Saturday night. I'm looking for an cheap, independent beach hotel to stay at. Mom and pop places are fine and welcome. Doesn't have to be right on beach, can deal with a few blocks away. Under $70 a night would be fantastic. Thanks.

San Diego relaxing beachy vacation

I perused many of the San Diego questions but didn't feel that any fit the bill. I'm going to San Diego with my husband the last weekend (Thu-Sun) in July (weekend after Comic-con). We'd like to do relaxing beach-y (walking along or swimming, not surfing) or historical sight-seeing things, sit in nice coffeeshops and eat good food. More snowflakes inside. [more inside]

Recommend a good seaside town near London in July

It should be within a couple of hours of London by train, but not Brighton (we go there a lot). Probably for just one night--a Sunday. It's for my SO's birthday, so someplace romantic would be good although it's not a requirement. Recommendations for places to stay, restaurants and pubs also welcome. [more inside]

Looking for a Burma Shave homage to beach season rules

I'm a resident of a small beach community. Help me publicize the beach rules with amusing (or at least cringe-worthy witty) prose. This will be vigilante signage to reinforce the municipal small-print ordinance signs and hyper-local informational a.m. radio cast. Humor, irony, and mild to medium innuendo is suitable. Assume unobtrusive roadside signage along the causeway approaching the island is tolerated. [more inside]

Where in the US should we go for our anniversary?--punk beach edition

My husband and I are looking for somewhere to go on a short vacation--4 or 5 days--for our five year anniversary in late May. We have a number of preferences, but the thing we want most is a place that has a beach and a pretty good punk scene. Beach does not necessarily have to be warm enough to be swimmable, it just needs to exist. [more inside]

Help me plan a beach vacation in mexico

We are planning a beach vacation (for about 7-8 days) in Mexico in next few months with a 5-year-old and an 18-month-old. We are planning on spending most of the time at the beach or around the pool. Might for an excursion, if it’s something that we can handle with an 18-month-old. At night, we like the option of getting out from the resort and walk around the streets (if it’s safe) and maybe try street food. No nightclubs for us. More information inside [more inside]

Is window tinting worth it?

Just moved to LA, and doing lots of street parking for the time being. Would it be worth getting the windows tinted? Definitely more to reduce heat than for appearance sake. I don't want to end up with a bubbly, blue mess on my windows either, and I'm not sure if that happens over time and/or only in the case of sloppy self-installation...?

What is this small shoreline fish found in surf of MA beaches?

Purchase of a cheap mask & snorkel has shown me that the surf zone of east coast beaches is an ecosystem chick full of crabs & fish & more- totally amazing! Within 2 feet of shore (in surf, not in tide pools) we recently found tiny puffer fish, pipefish & one mystery fish - what is this fish? pic 1 pic 2 (Found all over beaches of Martha's Vineyard. It's about 3 inches long, has wing-like fins that it uses to scoot along the sandy bottom. Some were all light brown, some had a lot more white. Pics look weird as the fish is inside an old 2 liter soda bottle.)

Recommendations for beach shacks in South Goa?

I'm looking for recommendations for beach shacks in South Goa. Ideal would be right on the water, quiet, and with good food options nearby. We'd like to steer clear of places with a bit too much of a ayurveda/yoga/woo/backpacker vibe, but understand some of that is inevitable. Help Plan New Years Beach Vacation

I'm looking for a great spot to get away from New England for a New Year's beach vacation. I realize I'm booking last-minute so flights are expensive and lodging inventory is limited. Tulum is high on the list, but it doesn't seem possible to stay anywhere near the water for less than $500/night (which is WAY beyond my budget). Airbnb has places in town for around $1000/week which is well within reach. Would it be a fun/relaxing/rejuvenating beach vacation experience staying in town in Tulum, renting a car, and driving to the beach? if so, does the hive mind have any tips for staying in town? Also, what alternative destinations might I consider in order to get right on the water? [more inside]
