Cellphones refuse to charge batteries

This has happened over at least 3 different cellphones, from HTC and Samsung. The battery will work fine for months, and then the phone will lose the ability to recognize that it is charging. [more inside]

Auto Electrics for Dummies: Scooter Edition

I'm travelling on my Scooter about 1,200 kms (800 miles) over two days. Is there a way I can hitch up a 12 volt (car) or 5 volt USB charger to keep my Smartphone topped up while on the road and using power hungry apps? There is no 12v charger available, although there is adequate space under the saddle to store a work around. [more inside]

Do you trust 3rd party smartphone batteries?

Do you trust third-party batteries for your cellphone? Specifically I'm thinking about picking up some spare batteries for the HTC Evo, but I've been a non-removable battery phone user for so long that I don't know if I really should stick to the manufacturer's branded batteries or can safely save some money and look elsewhere (like a Seidio, for example).

Where to buy a new battery for a 2-year-old cell phone?

Where should I buy a battery for a 2-year-old cell phone? My LG VX6100 is down to 48 hours of standby time, and I'd prefer not to get a new phone (and renew my cell carrier contract) right now. But a compatible battery does not seem to be available from a small handful of trustworthy sources, only from dozens of anonymous cell phone accessory stores. I'm wary of lousy or simply fake cell phone battery stores selling refurbished or used batteries as if they were new. Does anyone know of any reputable sources of new cell phone batteries for old phones? [more inside]

Cell phone: off or on to make battery last?

I'm sure somebody else who's travelling over Thanksgiving could also benefit from this knowledge. I brought my cell phone with me on my five-day trip to my parents' place, but of course I forgot the charger. The question I ask is: 'tis nobler to leave the phone on continuously and hope the battery pulls through, or is it a better idea to turn the phone off every night and turn it on only at the point in the day when I plan to use it? Does powering off and on drain more battery power than idling / the cell phone equivalent of "sleep"? FWIW, I have a relatively new Nokia 6682, and the battery is currently showing a full charge but I suspect it's lying, as I think it's been at least 24 hours since I charged it (that said, this battery's done five days unplugged before).

Are there REALLY any benefits to battery power cycling?

Battery power cycling - it's offered as advice for poor battery life on pretty much anything, from cell phones to laptops. Heck, T-Mobile told me to do it today after I switched phones and the same battery dropped from 50 hours of standby time to 9 hours. However, I've only ever cycled one thing - a laptop battery - and that dropped its capacity from 4 hours to 30 minutes. Because of that I'm a bit wary, so my question is, what's the logic behind power cycling a battery, and has anyone actually seen any benefits from it?
