Where is my Mac (and maybe my iphone?) hiding stuff I may need?

Tomorrow is my last day at a job I’ve been at for years. For all that time, the company has owned my only computer and my only phone. Much of what’s on both is the company’s, and of course I’ll leave that behind. There are some personal documents that I know are mine, and I know how to keep them. Is there other stuff tucked away on the Mac or the iPhone that I may want to keep? What, and how? [more inside]

Mail app on Macbook not downloading the oldest (2-3 years) of messages

I am trying to back up my Gmail account to my home computer, a MacBook Pro. I am able to sync the account and have downloaded most of my messages/attachments, but the native Mac mail program only downloads messages as far back as 2006. (My Gmail account goes back to 2004.) Disk space is not a problem. I have also made sure the setting for limiting the number of messages to download is not checked. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Simple automatic backup for Windows 10 laptop, have Dreamhost, ASO

My elderly Dad's laptop got infected with some ransomware and it turns out he has no backup. I'd like to set him up with something simple and automatic to back up his files periodically. I live in another country and can set things up via TeamViewer to his Windows 10 laptop and maybe get some local help. I also have accounts on Dreamhost and A Small Orange, can I make use of those? Is it possible to restore 25 photos from a time machine backup

So I've got a macbook air. There is NOT a ton of room left on it. But somehow a bunch (like 25-30) photos I took were deleted. I'm still not sure how. And I want to restore JUST those photos. But as I understand it, I need to restore the entire library. And I don't have enough room for TWO libraries on this computer. So is it possible to just go back, look for the photos I want, and restore JUST those? If so...how? Latest mac OSX.

Best practice for Windows 10 update

I'm about to update my Thinkpad430s from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I always create partitions on my hard drive and store all data separately from the main Windows installation. Do I need to back those partitions up before upgrading or is backing up the primary partition sufficient?

Is there a reasonably reliable USB flash drive for use as back-up media?

Is there USB flash media < 32GB that is cheap and reliable enough to use as non-critical file back-up for a Windows 10 PC? I have had a ton of problems with USB flash drives failing mysteriously... so I had previously used a cheap usb hard drive, which failed completely (screeech) within about a year and a half. I'm not interested in any "cloud" solutions.

Looking to digitize my book library, but worried about corrupted PDFs

I have a rather extensive (read: physically burdensome) library of books I'd collected over the years that I'd like to digitize to take with me as I move on to my next adventure. Home Backup Power Options

I live in Toronto and my neighbourhood has above-ground powerlines and lots of trees. We get blackouts every year, usually from something happening at a transformer station, but during the ice storm it was because of trees taking out power lines. If I want to protect my family and house against power outages it seems like my options are either getting an installed generator, a portable generator or some kind of backup battery. How do these compare, and is anything going to change much in the next couple of years? [more inside]

Nauseating smell after drain overflow

An old waste pipe in my apartment, that shouldn't have been connected to anything, overflowed earlier this week. The pipe was in the bottom of my interior HVAC closet. I had standing water in the location for slightly over 12 hours. Maintenance came out to repair the pipe and replaced part of it. Now I've got a nauseating smell pervading my downstairs. How do I move an iPad movie file to a PC flash drive?

And if so, point us to similar type of drive, preferably 2 or more terabytes for a Windows 7 office. Does the MyBook line do anything like this? Dropbox alternative that works with Mac "packaged" files hierarchies.

I could keep trying different options but I'm on a deadline and would love a recommendation for a reliable, "package" friendly solution. I'm working in Storyboard Pro with Mavericks and so far: -Google Drive keeps intermittently kacking out. -Box won't accept Storyboard project files. Storyboard projects contain many nested subfolders, holding many, many more tiny vector graphic files. I don't need more than a couple of gigabytes of space but it needs to be free. I've left Dropbox because of the Rice appointment, not because I dissatisfied with the product.

Backing up my Gmail account

As part of a general digital cleanup (thank you, Heartbleed), I want to perform the long overdue task of backing up my Gmail account (with nearly a decade's worth of email) to my mac. I have two questions: 1) Is gmvault the only option? Is there anything more accessible to a user who hasn't used Terminal with any regularity in eight years, and even then wasn't very proficient using the command line? 2) If gmvault is the only option, or the most accessible option, can someone explain very clearly how to run it? I am unable to successfully follow the instructions on the gmvault website--they seem to assume that I'll intuit some necessary steps, when I actually need every step laid out for me.
