Backspace doesn't go back under screen.

Can I make backspace work the same in a screen session as in a normal shell? I'm rather fond of screen, but what I don't like is the way that backspace becomes delete - ie it deletes the character under the cursor, rather than the one to the left, and gives an annoying "wuff wuff" message if the cursor is at the end of the line.

Can this behaviour be adjusted to match the behaviour of the shell I started with?

(this is under various ubuntus and OpenWRT - OSX doesn't have this problem)

Backspace Malfunction?

I can't backspace in Microsoft office and I don't know why. I have an IBM T43p laptop running Microsoft office 2003 (and thus, Microsoft word 2003). Recently the backspace button has decided to stop working solely within Word; I can backspace individual spaces, but if I highlight a section and press backspace to delete, it moves the cursor to the the beginning of the highlighted area and un-highlights the text without getting rid of it. I've checked as many functions as I can think of, but have found nothing. There are no other problems with the keyboard, and the problem only exists in Office (specifically Word).
Any ideas?
