We have a new baby, and would love to get a bottle of liquor to stick in the basement and hopefully remember where it is 21 years from now, in order to drink it with her to celebrate her 21st birthday. I think we want a port, but we have no idea what to look for when purchasing this, and the person at the liquor store was very unhelpful (but we are willing to go to another store if that is the answer). Help us not screw this up! [more inside]
My best friend just found out that his wife is pregnant. He's excited but a little anxious and is looking for book recommendations, though he'd probably be interested in blogs, websites, or other info sources. [more inside]

Experienced parents of Mefi! I know there are so many of you! So, I've posted this question on a forum specific to sleep challenges but received no feedback so turning to the green. My 14 month old has refused for the past two months to sleep in her crib...it started around the time that she started pulling up an walking... She is now walking steadily so this milestone has been reached. Please help us transition her back to the crib soon because baby #2 will arrive in a few months and I'm getting too big for us all to be in our bed. [more inside]
Our kid is turning one-year-old and we're throwing a big party in a couple of weeks at my parent's house in Long Island. We'd like to hire a photographer to document the day and have been looking around, but we're mainly just finding wedding photographers. We'd like to hire a professional (or, at least, expert) photographer -- we don't want to just give a camera to one of the guests. Are there professional photographers who aren't on the wedding circuit who'd consider doing this sort of thing? Would art or MFA students be interested in doing this sort of work (and, if so, how would we find them)? Are there other non-wedding routes that we haven't thought about but should be exploring?
Due to some pregnancy complications, it's looking very likely that our baby will be born by c-section at around 32 weeks, and at least 3 weeks small for gestational age. We're anticipating a NICU stay of many weeks. I have a few questions for those who have been there to help me visualise what this time will be like. [more inside]

Hi! Mrs ManInSuit and I are planning a party to mark the arrival of little six-month-old BabyInSuit. The plan is for an all-day causal open house, with a trip to the park. Looking for tips on how to make this fun and nice for the guests, and minimally stressful for us. [more inside]

OK, so we've got another baby in our house. She's six months actually. And my wife is run ragged. We're both scaling back our household ambitions massively to get through the day. We've read lots on the subject and we've actually been through this once before - but it's SO hard. Well, at least it is for us. How was it or is it for you? Please share. [more inside]
I came down with a cold and missed my friend's baby shower. I'd like to get them a nice gift, maybe around $50-100, but their registry only has burp cloths left. I know that they already have a car seat and baby monitor and that they will be using cloth diapers. Parents: what items/services in that price range have you found to be really useful?
I love sewing small burp cloths and baby quilts for friends. But I'm hitting a wall, where friends are having babies faster than I can churn out little quilts. If you have some experience sewing or quilting, can you help me figure out a better method with decent results? These aren't meant to be heirloom pieces, just heartfelt and unique small blankets or quilts to welcome a new baby and brighten their days. [more inside]
My boyfriend and I currently live in NYC. We hate it - we're tired of the noise, the garbage, the tiny apartments and the high prices for nearly everything. But we're considering having a baby in the next few years, and both our families are nearby - should we stay for family support or move to a location where we would likely be happier? [more inside]

Should I buy formula in bulk for an 11-month-old baby? I want to follow his lead on weaning, but I also don't want to waste money or formula. I'm looking for advice from parents who let their babies self-wean. [more inside]
We've got a nine-month-old who's never really been in a pool. We'd like to plan a short two or three day vacation built around playing with him in an *outdoor* pool somewhere that's within a three hour drive of NYC. Please recommend a hotel or bed and breakfast that's got a nice, baby-friendly pool. Before the baby, we stayed at resorts in Arizona and California that'd be perfect for this sort of thing, but we can't seem to find anything similar on the east coast. Thanks!

My friend's little girl just passed the 6 month mark. She is very afraid of people and will tolerate others being nearby, but if anyone other than mom or dad try holding her it's an instant trigger for tears and screaming. My friend is trying to get the baby more used to me so I can babysit, but it's not going so well. What to do? [more inside]
I've spent the past week packing up all my belongings in preparation for moving to a new house tomorrow. A few days ago I discovered a large brown recluse spider under my staircase with numerous young or smaller spiders. I sprayed pesticide on them and continued packing upstairs... I never located any dead spiders and unfortunately I was dumb enough to sleep about 5feet away from where I originally found them. Up until this morning i didn't think much of the itchy bumps on my back...then my fiancée noticed them and clarified 3 bites on my lower back all matching the descriptions found online for the spider in question. Before I freak out and go to the ER could anyone enlighten on the venomousness of baby spiders compared to adults. Also how would multiple bites factor in? They've steadily have gotten worse and now appear red with a blister ... I'm assuming I was bitten 2-3 nights ago... Help!
Preparing for our first baby in October and trying to figure out the smartest approach to equipping ourselves with everything we're going to need. So many choices to make! What things should we pay more for because we'd regret pinching pennies, and when is splurging on the pricier stuff a waste? What should we look for new vs used (and not just for safety issues like carseats, but also what's the key "never waste your money on buying X new, you can get it so much cheaper used" stuff)? [more inside]
We have a small back yard that backs up into some woods. I’ve seen deer in the neighborhood (not in our yard though), and there are definitely mice, bunnies, chipmunks, squirrels, and neighborhood cats and dogs that can be seen roaming our property. We’re thinking of getting the back sprayed for ticks, esp. for the sake of our one year old. Is that overkill? And if we spray, do organics work, or do we need to go chemical? [more inside]
Is it normal to celebrate these holidays before you have a baby? Partner and I are expecting. We're excited but this was a surprise. Baby is due in July. Would it be normal or customary to celebrate a partner on Mother's Day or Father's Day in these circumstances? We won't really be a mother or father until next year. Am I likely to disappoint my partner if I don't get a gift or card or something this year? What have you done or seen done? I could ask them, but this seems like one of those things that would lose its luster if I have to ask. I'd rather just get it right.

Our 10-month old has eaten purees happily since about month four. She's now transitioning to solid foods (steamed carrots, puffs, rusks), but has not yet mastered it well enough that she's getting significant nutrition from it. But she's now spurning the purees--both old favorites and new additions, homemade and store bought. No worries she'll starve, but we'd love her to eat her purees happily again. Any tips? My 5 month old baby has learnt to flip from back to front, and does so very often while he's sleeping. Unfortunately, he's not figured out how to flip from front to back yet, and that means he will suddenly start screaming away during sleeptime. This is messing up his sleep schedule, and making him wake up a lot more often that he should. Any ideas what we should do, if anything? And how does this affect any sleep training that we're planning on doing? [more inside]
