Spraying our yard for ticks: yea or nay? And chemical or organic?

We have a small back yard that backs up into some woods. I’ve seen deer in the neighborhood (not in our yard though), and there are definitely mice, bunnies, chipmunks, squirrels, and neighborhood cats and dogs that can be seen roaming our property. We’re thinking of getting the back sprayed for ticks, esp. for the sake of our one year old. Is that overkill? And if we spray, do organics work, or do we need to go chemical? [more inside]

Mother's Day and Father's Day for parents-to-be?

Is it normal to celebrate these holidays before you have a baby? Partner and I are expecting. We're excited but this was a surprise. Baby is due in July. Would it be normal or customary to celebrate a partner on Mother's Day or Father's Day in these circumstances? We won't really be a mother or father until next year. Am I likely to disappoint my partner if I don't get a gift or card or something this year? What have you done or seen done? I could ask them, but this seems like one of those things that would lose its luster if I have to ask. I'd rather just get it right.

Baby starts fighting purées

Our 10-month old has eaten purees happily since about month four. She's now transitioning to solid foods (steamed carrots, puffs, rusks), but has not yet mastered it well enough that she's getting significant nutrition from it. But she's now spurning the purees--both old favorites and new additions, homemade and store bought. No worries she'll starve, but we'd love her to eat her purees happily again. Any tips? Baby is Flipping Out

My 5 month old baby has learnt to flip from back to front, and does so very often while he's sleeping. Unfortunately, he's not figured out how to flip from front to back yet, and that means he will suddenly start screaming away during sleeptime. This is messing up his sleep schedule, and making him wake up a lot more often that he should. Any ideas what we should do, if anything? And how does this affect any sleep training that we're planning on doing? [more inside]

Babby Middle Name Filter

Hey Green, need some help with naming my newborn. We came up with first name some time ago, but not middle name. And since she has now been born this became a more pressing issue. First name - Zoe, last name - long, russian/jewish, something like, but not, Shostakovich. Trying to find something that flows/sounds good. Bonus points - starts with a V or an F. Potentially OK with more obscure names.

More songs for baby video, like M. Ward's "One Hundred Million Years"

I'm looking for more songs similar to M. Ward's "One Hundred Million Years" for a 20-minute baby photo/video compilation. I have found plenty of kids' songs and songs written about having children. I'm looking for more indie songs that echo the sentiment, "And this love, this love between you and I, Is older than that burning ball of fire up in the sky." Songs by indie singers about endless love, happiness, joy, the beauty of life, etc. would fit the bill. [more inside]

Novel with a baby kicking his heels?

This is such a little thing but it's bugging me! I read a novel with a scene in which two women are talking. One has a baby and they put the baby down (on a rug? on the lawn?) so he can 'kick his heels'. I am pretty sure it is a British novel and probably not recent, say written before 1980. Does anyone know what novel I am thinking of? Asking because I realise I never really understood what 'kicking his heels' meant until my own baby started to do it!

Single parent wants second baby.. am I crazy?

Is it weird that I want to have another kid (but don’t want to get pregnant again). Like adopting one, or hire a surrogate (my egg and donor sperm). I am single parent (mother) already. I think I can pull this off financially (We wont be rich, but we wont be poor either). But is it a very radical idea? I am no Angelina Jolie – just your normal average Jane. The world is still a man’s world as much I hate admitting it or observing it. Will I completely blow my changes of ever finding a life partner if I do this. I feel very strongly about adopting and have been thinking about it for a very long time now. Suggestions, anyone? How should I think about this? My therapist strongly advised against it because in her opinion I haven’t accessed the risks of bringing another kid into my life and my daughter’s life.

How can I secure a glass table top in a house with a toddler?

I have a dining room/kitchen glass table, with a round tabletop that sits on top of a metal base without any attachment point. It's sort of similar to this item. My daughter is 1 year old and just starting to become mobile. I'm concerned she might push or pull on the tabletop and cause it to fall, injuring her. I've been stumped on how to find a way to secure it. The best I've found are some round discs to attach somewhere, but I'm suspicious that they will really work. Has anyone successfully babyproofed such a table?

Audiobooks for a preemie in the NICU?

I have a dear friend whose son has been in the NICU since June 25th. He's responded incredibly well to classical music, Aphex Twin and loves other types of "light" stimulation, especially anything with repetitive patterns/sounds (he cries when bath time ends, for example, and loves watching a little light/music toy that we hold outside his crib). They're exhausted from coming up with ideas for things to play/do with him within his very limited environment, and he is immune-compromised so most "typical" baby toys are out.
