My 6.5 week old baby wants to suck and suck. Attempts at introducing a pacifier have been met with gags. She tries to get her fingers in there but just can't quite coordinate it. That leaves me. I'm often but not always willing to play this game, and soon have to go back to work. Suggestions?

My wife and I have talked of adopting a dog for a while. Following the untimely passing of one of our cats, this is more feasible, and could help console us. But we have questions for adopting a dog in our desert climate, and on dogs coming into a family with a baby, and a cat. And we're concerned about being good owners, as our time at home is limited during the week. Also, we're discussing what a good age range for an adoptable dog would be. Details inside.

My husband of 1.5 years and I have been constantly fighting all the time. We have ideological differences in what we want from life and family, and the gender roles within the family. I feel stifled and feel like I have been making all sacrifices without getting any support or admiration. I am not his precious, if you know what I mean. Over time, I’ve started feeling like I am just a means to an end for my husband and he doesn’t really love or care for me as a person. Husband, on the other hand, feels like what is important for him (his list: his parents, baptism of our daughter, household responsibilities to be taken care of by wife and ability to state his position even if it is different from mine, which often times it is) are not important to me. I believe in solid nuclear family structure, equality of genders in household chores, saving up on behalf of both partners and investing wisely. I am not overtly religious and hope not to make my kids overtly religious, even though I don’t have any issue with baptism per se. I am 31 and husband is 33 years old, and we are both quite highly educated.

So my wife is pregnant. Hooray! (Still early enough that we don't know the gender). We're starting to think about names. It seems to me that the world's great hope and story of progress is the expansion of rights and consideration of the views & interests of an ever-widening swath of humanity. Which historical figures stand for pluralism, for rejecting provincialism, in word or deed? I've picked up, but haven't yet read
Kwame Anthony Appiah's Cosmopolitanism; I'd be grateful for suggestions of books or other resources that might be useful.

So, I'm trying to get some opinions here:
My fiance and I have been engaged for 4 months and are in our mid-20s. We are both in school (undergrad for him, grad for me), but due to my income, we wanted to wait one more year, so that it would be financially better for us (e.g., paying tuition, etc). We are both interested in having children, however, something has come up for me health-wise (ulcerative colitis) that would make it less safe (because of medications) to have a baby later on, compared with now. Here are my questions for you:
1) Would you have a baby before marriage? What would be the reasons?
2) Has anyone actively planned this before? How did it work out?
I know some would say suck it up and push up the wedding, but it would save us a good 20K or so.

My wife and I will be visiting New Orleans at the end of this month with our almost 1-year old son. Having the baby with us has required two contingencies: we are renting a car, and our days will have to end by 6:30 or 7 pm-ish (although they do start at 6:30-7am). We will also need to find a quiet place for him to nap during the day, or else sit in the car/return to our lodging for an hour or so. I am hoping he'll nap in the stroller as we wander the city, but can't take this for granted. Given this, and the fact that we only have two days (Friday-22 and Monday-25, the weekend is taken up by the wedding we are travelling for) how best to organize our time? Any advice on travelling with an infant?

Is there any way I can get my 8-month-old baby to sleep well when we visit his grandparents? Or what are some reasonable expectations for the visit? At home, over the last few months, we've transitioned from all-night wake-and-whine marathons to REAL SLEEP by letting the kid cry it out.
Please don't judge; I already beat myself up over it. Sleep training is still better than a mom mostly dead from sleep deprivation. But tomorrow we leave for the grandparents' house for a 4-day visit, and I have no idea what we're going to do for sleep.

What's a good, structured carrier that can accommodate him comfortably? He's fairly small for his age, just now able to fit in his "6" clothes.

Why do kittens, bunnies, puppies, and their ilk seem so much cuter than human babies? This is something I've always wondered, and I am surprised that it doesn't seem to have been asked here. I've seen some idle speculations about the reasons in various places around the Web, but nothing resembling evidence. Is there any actual research related to this topic? Or is the question based on flawed assumptions somehow?

I am 35, my husband is 44. I have always struggled with my career, and recently quit my job and entered a sonography program. Just before entering the program I am in, I also applied to PA school. I have been offered a place in PA school, and I do not know what to do. Lately my biology has caught up with me (baby. now.) and I do not want to put off baby much longer (we could start trying to conceive in exactly one year if I stay and complete the sonography course-I am in the second quarter of a two year course). If I switch to PA, (program is also two years but does not start until 7 months from now) it means either having a baby during my clinical year and going straight back to rotations (ouch) or putting baby off for TWO more years...also ouch. It is worth noting that I do not think that I am strong enough/career motivated enough to leave my baby for 12-14 hours per day, which is why either way, I would like to have the baby at the end of either program, so that I can stay home for a few months before starting my first job. Please see more inside.

My wife and I are planning to start trying to conceive in the next few months, and being academic bookish types, would like some books on the whole process. Specifically, we're interested in fertility issues (we're in our mid-30s) and generally the logistics of the whole process - prenatal nutrition, choosing a doctor and a hospital, preparing for the kid, and so on. My personal preference is for books that are more detailed (citations to back things up are great) rather than touchy-feely.

My wife and I are thinking of heading to Iceland for our summer vacation. This year will be a little different as we will be traveling with our 14month old. Since are on the East Coast the flight to Iceland is reasonably quick and Iceland is quicker than some domestic locations
We hope to rent a house in the south eastern part of Iceland in late May or early June. We will use the house as our base and do some small day trips from there. Our only goal for the vacation is to enjoy the scenery and see a few things. We are going to travel light and purchase most food and diapers there.
Any hints, tips, and tricks traveling to Iceland with an infant. What can we expect in terms of availability of conventional baby foods and diapers? Anything else we should know?

What can we do to help at a time like this? There's an additional level of nuance in that I'm heavily pregnant and we're due in about a month; how will this affect the grieving family?
