If you could move anywhere for 6 months to a year where would you go?

We currently live in the US Virgin Islands. We have a healthy little 15-month old boy and we are hoping for a +/-2 year difference in age for our 2nd, so family planning begins now. Zika is expected to rip around the Caribbean islands for the foreseeable future. That means we have to move. [more inside]

Leaving 1 year old for a week with grandparents, good or bad idea?

Our daughter will turn 1 in August, and we have been invited to a friend's wedding in Italy (we are in the US), so we would need about 7-9 days. We normally take her with us on travels, but it's too much of a long travel flight time for her as she hasn't been on a plane yet, so bringing her is out of the question. We did want to go on a vacation just us two after her 1 year so it kind of works out perfectly. But, I'm afraid now that the time is come that she is too young, and that it will be too hard on her (and me), and I feel a tiny bit guilty leaving her. We could really use a vacation to relax and reconnect. My mother (her grandmother) is her caretaker during the week because we both work full time, so they are very comfortable with one another and I trust her completely. Has anyone traveled that long without your baby, how did it turn out?

I miss my old life, pre-baby & feel extremely guilty...is this normal?

Nobody can prepare you for motherhood, nobody can even come close to describing the joys, sadness and all other mixes of emotions that come with adding a new life to your family. And nobody really shared the struggles or "not so pretty" side to motherhood, so with my feelings of yearning for my old life I feel so guilty that I haven't embraced this new life with an open heart and arms...are these feelings normal? Do mothers and fathers roles cause resentment, because there is inevitibly more responsiblity on the mothers (by nature to nurture if that makes sense)? How do you maintain a relationship with your SO when life seems to be so seperate now that a baby has arrived? A lot of the fun we had together is now seperate. [more inside]

gift for two year old and for new parents

Hi everyone. I am going to be traveling in a month and staying with close friends, whose children I am fairy godparent to. Nephew #1 is two and a half, nephew #2 is going to be less than 3 months old. I would like to get a gift for nephew #1, the two and a half year old, and perhaps something for the parents. My needs are fairly simple, but I'm not around kids much and I don't know what I'm doing. More details under the cut. [more inside]

Help me plan a beach vacation in mexico

We are planning a beach vacation (for about 7-8 days) in Mexico in next few months with a 5-year-old and an 18-month-old. We are planning on spending most of the time at the beach or around the pool. Might for an excursion, if it’s something that we can handle with an 18-month-old. At night, we like the option of getting out from the resort and walk around the streets (if it’s safe) and maybe try street food. No nightclubs for us. More information inside [more inside]

New mommy help - door safety edition

On my main floor there is a door to the basement which needs to be open at least partially for the cats to get to their litter boxes, but obviously can't be open all the way with a little mover scooting around. 4 month old not sleeping, ferber, swaddle transition- ADVICE!

My 4 month old sweet little girl decided about 2 weeks ago she didn't want to sleep her usual 5-7 hours through the night, and now wakes up every hour or two needing help getting back to sleep, and it's killing me :( Our bedtime routine consist of bottle, bath, then rock until she's asleep at between 7-8 pm. She would sleep until 1-3 am for a feed and then sleep again until 6-7am...not anymore and it's continued for a couple weeks. She uses a pacifier which is the biggest culprit, and she is still swaddled. It's a vicious cycle, re-swaddle her tight, the paci falls out she wakes up crying, or even the paci will still be in and she will drop it just waking up grunting and wiggling around and then it falls out. She is a very active sleeper, I feel like she's trying to get out of the swaddle all night. Usually I have to pick her up and rock her back to sleep or get up to pat her back put the paci back in. Our Baby Is Not Getting Married

Our kid is turning one-year-old and we're throwing a big party in a couple of weeks at my parent's house in Long Island.  We'd like to hire a photographer to document the day and have been looking around, but we're mainly just finding wedding photographers. We'd like to hire a professional (or, at least, expert) photographer -- we don't want to just give a camera to one of the guests.

Are there professional photographers who aren't on the wedding circuit who'd consider doing this sort of thing?  Would art or MFA students be interested in doing this sort of work (and, if so, how would we find them)?  Are there other non-wedding routes that we haven't thought about but should be exploring?
