We're going to Australia this summer (late July-early August) and would prefer not to book rooms in advance, but will that be a disaster? [more inside]
My partner and I are flying from the US into Melbourne on the first of July and leaving two weeks later. The arrival and departure flights are booked, and now we're looking to lock down our travel schedule within Australia and between Australia and New Zealand. How ambitious is this itinerary? [more inside]
I'm moving to Melbourne from overseas in early May. While househunting I've been told that my list of suburbs is too long and I should choose about 4-5. Which 4-5 to choose? [more inside]
I saw a few episodes of Black-ish on a plane recently and liked it a lot. I am subscribed to Netflix, and a VPN service, but it's not on any region there. I have an iPad and an android phone, but it's not available from iTunes for people in Australia, and I even downloaded the Amazon app, having heard it was an Amazon exclusive, but the bastards say "not available in your region" when I try to purchase it. They also seem good at getting uploads removed from the not-so-legal sites. I don't have a DVD or video player. Am I completely out of luck?
I am preparing for a move to Sydney. I will be burning an askmefi question a week for awhile so here is question one: what to take from my US kitchen? I have a lot of equipment. [more inside]
I am trying to put together an itinerary for my parents who will be spending a week in Melbourne before my partner and I arrive. My mom really wants to see the penguin parade and I booked tickets for her - before looking into transportation to/from the island. Oops. Now I'm wondering if there's a way to fix this. [more inside]
My in-laws live in Sydney and are looking to move to an area within NSW, Queensland or Victoria which fits their beach-loving, eco-conscious young family. Details within: [more inside]

I would like my medical records held by a private general practice destroyed. I am in Queensland, Australia. How can I do this? Is it possible? There are no insurance issues and I am in complete charge of my own legal affairs and a private citizen.

I'm trying to find a humorous commercial for Levi jean that I haven't seen for years. Difficulty: 90's Australian TV. Google is failing me and this is driving me crazy!! Details inside... [more inside]

Figured this North American who's never been to Australia could take a week to travel before meetings start. What's fun? How far to roam?
It looks like I'm starting to develop skin cancers on my face. Ugh. I've always been careful to slip, slap and slop when outside playing sports. But probably not as careful for daily activities. That needs to change. [more inside]
I'm trying to hunt down the All 4 Adventure show. Their YouTube channel just has short clips and compilations. I'm not currently in a location that they will ship their DVD's to. I've hunted around, but have come up dry. Thanks for helping!
Can anyone answer the question posed in this blog post? Namely, what is the etymology behind the choice of kanji for the word for Australia?
I am a cyclist in NSW, Australia. At the intersection in this image, I am not sure what I am legally supposed to do (or what my best option is if the legal one is not safe, which I think might be the case). The red line represents off-road cycle paths separate from the pedestrian footpath. I am trying to get from where the first red line (left) ends to where the second one starts (right). Can anyone tell me what I should do? Or who do I contact to find out (or to lobby to improve the intersection for cyclists) - the local council? [more inside]

Road Trip AUS - usually when I roadtrip (in the US), I'll just stop for the day when; somewhere particularly nice turns up; I'm tired and reach the next motel. Is this style of roadtripping possible in AUS? From the research I've done so far, I'm not too sure, and I'm concerned about hassles involving pre-booking hotels to ensure a place to stay each night: for me, in a roadtrip, I'm looking for the freedom of not having to make daily schedules. Today a casual social chat on the phone with an acquaintance had her asking me what kind of work I was looking for. I had mentioned that I wanted to do advocacy work as I believed it was something I was very good at and would enjoy doing. She then asked me what kind of advocacy and I said I wasn't really focused on any one type but supporting the voices of marginalised people was something I was passionate about. I was really just chattering on... then she told me she'd like to see my resume. Oops. [more inside]
My understanding is that Australian citizens get access to a much lower tuition rate at Australian universities, and that the way student loans are repaid in Australia basically means that the repayment pauses indefinitely as long as the Australian moves abroad after graduation. Does this mean that if my kids are born/raised in the USA (but have Australian citizenship through their Australian mother), I could send them off to Australian universities and have them receive their university education more-or-less for free (since they'd presumably be returning to the US after graduation)? Or are there additional residency/repayment requirements that I'm missing? [more inside]
Hello Mefites: My girlfriend and me are seriously considering the possibility of moving to Australia permanently next year. If everything goes as planned, we will move in around 12 months from now. I have a 7-year-old adorable Norwegian Forest male cat I adopted in Spain 5 years ago and brought to Colombia (I have dual nationality) 3 years ago. I need to know what options are available to bring him safely to our new home down under. [more inside]
I'm reaching out to my fellow Sydney-based Australians for recommendations on Accountants that are geared towards small business/consultancies. I've recently hung up my shingle as a consultant and would like to engage with an accountant that will grow with me and set me off on the right foot. [more inside]
We are house-hunting at the moment in Sydney, Australia. I keep falling in love with federation-style houses. For example, my current obsession is this 101-year-old beauty but I also love this one and a variety of similar places. My husband thinks that houses of this sort of age are likely to be a total money-pit, especially if wooden, and even if renovated. Is this true? [more inside]
I'm an NYC-based photographer who has been asked to send a print to Australia. My regular printer doesn't offer this option, so I was thinking that I might find a good lab there and send along my digital file, hopefully saving myself a boatload of cash in the process? I'm looking for a good lab that offers C-Prints, (specifically 11x14 and larger for now) located in Australia. Can it be that hard? Thanks!

My friend is coming to New York City from Australia this weekend. I'm a local, so I don't have any idea what sort of restaurants I should take her to that both say "New York" and that she wouldn't be able to get in Australia. Thoughts?
We have a couple more days in Sydney, and need a few suggestions for what to do with the rest of our time. I would prefer sights and scenes of nature we can't see anywhere else. The difficulty: my wife needs a break from walking. [more inside]
G'day Austalian mefites! I'm going to be visiting Australia, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to use my phone while I'm there. It's a Galaxy S4 from Verizon. [more inside]
Australian-made, possibly late 70's/early 80's, about a teacher (I think) who moves to a new school (I think) who encounters an evil child or children or community. One scene in particular has stuck in my head for the last 30-ish years, and I'd like to watch it again to see if it's as scary as I remember. (There is a fake suicide scene which I describe inside, so please be warned about a potential trigger.) [more inside]
Next week I am visiting Australia for the first time. Flying in to Sydney, spending a week there with relatives in Merrylands, then two weeks with relatives in Melbourne (Braybrook) and then another week in Sydney. I want to know what is the best way to spend my time given that I am primarily interested in nature and day hikes, so the most pressing question is really 'What are the best day trips and hikes within a two-hour radius of Sydney and Melbourne?' Other factors: [more inside]
If the visa arrives, I'm going to be spending mid-Feb to May in Sydney; I've never been to Australia before & know no one in the city. I'd like to prep by signing up to useful emails & following twitter accounts to help me feel more familiar with the city before I fly out. [more inside]

I am trying to remember the name of a film that I saw. It is Australian, made in the late 80s or early 90s, and is about the neighbour and the nurse trying to get an elderly man's family to help with his declining health. My Google- and imdb-fu are not worthy. [more inside]
A couple of months ago I finally got out of bridging visa hell and obtained my Australian permanent residency. What can I do with it? [more inside]
I have a paper check in Australian dollars from the Australian tax office. I have a credit union account in the US where I could deposit it (the default route). Alternatively, I still have an Australian bank account, if that opens up a better way to transfer the money to the US. You are not my foreign exchange day trader, but maybe you have some advice for me? [more inside]
The issue isn't us as borrowers... It's the house. The house is part of a coop/co-housing setting. We'd be buying the house, but the land it sits on would remain owned by the co-op. Mortgage? [more inside]

We are moving to the tropics (specifically, Cairns, Australia) in January. I have never lived in a climate like this before. We are also going to be first time homeowners. Me and my partner are spending October through March on a working holiday in Australia. Our goal is to save money to bring back to the USA with us. What should we know about banking in Australia? How will we go about getting our money back into our US credit union while minimizing loss due to fees & exchange rates?
In six months I'm travelling to Sydney, Australia to visit a friend and I thought it'd be a great idea to watch the sunset to act as a memory for us both. Where is a good place outside of the city for this?
