I've been tasked with filming a series of seated "talking head" interviews using my DSLRs. What's the best way to create a minimal audio setup that will have acceptable quality, be reasonably easy to set up on location and to edit the final results, and also be reasonably cost-effective?

Please recommend movies that view coherently with the sound off. The example that I offer is 'Cast Away,' which, even during the book-ends of its series of scenes that have dialogue, every last minute point of film's exposition is conveyed through blocking, apparent emotions, and, obviously, action.

I need to replace the video track of an MP4 with a single image in one case and with a series of transitioning images in another case. In both cases I wish to leave the audio track intact. I have tried Virtual-Dub and Windows Movie Maker (the downloadable version does not allow editing of the video/audio separately). Any suggestions for which software to use. I thought it would be straightforward, it hasn't been.

Using a laptop running Ubuntu Linux 12.04, I want to record three things at once:
1) video of my desktop,
2) video from a USB webcam,
3) audio from a USB microphone.
Ideally I would like some setup which simultaneously starts all three recordings, and keeps them in sync, so that it will not be too painfully difficult to mix them later -- my eventual aim is to make a kind of "picture-in-picture" screencast. Is this feasible, and if it is, what's the best approach? (Free is nice, but if I can make this process smoother by paying less than a thousand dollars, I will happily pay.)

Fixing an HDMI connector: I broke the connector on one end of an in-wall HDMI cable. Is fixing it possible? This
AskMeFi thread proceeded with some of the answers I found on the internet until the poster realized they had a DVI cord.
So, I have an HDMI cable, one connector is broken, it runs 35 feet on a convoluted run through the walls and ceiling of an old house, so running new cable will not be as simple as just affixing a string to the old one and pulling it through.
Is fixing it possible?

I am having real trouble recording presentations on my Windows Vista laptop. I have this killer presentation on Open Office Impress and have CamStudio and Audacity. But, Audacity keeps crashing and I can't get CamStudio to record the entire screen. When I set "Full Screen" it just records a corner of it. I am wracking my brain trying to figure out a way to make this presentation work. I also have a Flip Mino and a slideshare account but I don't want to put the presentation online as its a course audition and very rough. Suggestions???

Primer on digital video codecs, containers, etc. While working with video on my Linux PCs, I am often confused because I just don't know much about all the different video formats (MPEG 4, h.264) "containers" (OGG, AVI) the different kinds of compression, how the audio and video stay in sync, what various terms like "muxing" mean, and so forth. I'm looking for a good document that explains all these things to someone with little knowledge of it. A web document, book, Wikipedia article, etc. would be good. I just don't know where to start to see how these things fit together. Thanks.
