Can anyone recommend any places/people (universities/community colleges, private teachers, nonprofit organizations, etc) that do ESL lessons in the Atlanta metro area and that do a good job for their students? [more inside]
I recently moved to Atlanta from Texas late last year. So far things have been fine, but the food situation here is very dire. Who knew the food would be so different! Can you help me find these food items? [more inside]
I will be going to dinner with my aunt who lives in NYC -I live in Atlanta (within the city or ITP). I would like to pick a restaurant that would be representative of our fine city. There are so many choices!! [more inside]
There is a possibility I may be getting a job that would require a relocation to Atlanta. Can you help recommend a community or neighborhood? Details inside. [more inside]
I'm looking for a wonderful woman who altered my clothes about 10 years ago. I believe she was known for fitting plus sized women well. She made some major changes to some clothes as I lost weight, and did a fantastic job. I'm back in he area but can't seem to find the shop. Does anyone remember this shop? Is it still there or somewhere else?
I know the green isn't necessarily awesome at local stuff like this, but i've posted elsewhere and thought it couldn't hurt. The lovely pourtant and I are about to purchase a home in Grant Park that needs some renovations. After dealing with dudebro inspectors, we've both had enough of the "women, theyre secretly in control and a handful, amirite??" awfulness and are hoping to find some women-owned businesses to give our money to instead. Tell me if or how I could like living in Atlanta. [more inside]
Do you think I can build a network and find a job in technical communication despite living in the country with no STC chapter? My foundation is decent: an English degree and current technical job. Said job has few technical writing roles, and none available for the foreseeable future. More inside. [more inside]
LAX to ATL. Need tips from expert travelers. [more inside]
Hey mefites of Atlanta! I am going to be traveling to your fabulous city for work in early February and I would like your advice! [more inside]
My fiance is hearing voices or random strangers talking about him/us. Really intimate details that no one could know. I am 99% sure this same type of thing cost him his job recently. This has happened maybe 4 times in the last 2 years that I've known him. On two of those occasions over been in the same place he has and I've not heard any of this. He tries to confront people and of course no one knows what he's talking about when he does this. [more inside]
Hi MetaFilter! I have upcoming work travel to Montomery, AL. I am planning to fly through Atlanta, GA, and drive in to Montgomery. Let me tell you about my special snowflake issues. [more inside]
One of the possibilities we've discussed for our wedding next year would be to have it in some sort of "country-ish" setting. We live in Atlanta but the idea of a more casual feeling wedding that mixes the beautiful, sprawling outdoors near to a covered building or tent is very appealing to us. [more inside]
Asking this question for a family member who just graduated from the University of Mobile with a B.S. She's considering moving to Atlanta for better job opportunities and continuing education in nursing. She has some bachelor-level credits in nursing-related classes and experience in the field. We have some questions... [more inside]
I will have a long layover in Atlanta tomorrow between international flights, and would like to buy a camera lens. Specifically, an Sigma 18-200. Where is the best place to do this? Quick and/or easy trip from the airport by MARTA is a must. I hope this is still possible, despite my lack of planning in advance!
Can you help me identify the companies with the best corporate culture? [more inside]
Another wedding question... So, newly engaged, which is awesome, but now that we've started trying to plan it, I feel so incredibly overwhelmed...and not in a good way. The first thing we need to do is figure out where. We have a budget of $5000 max, and every place I have researched or contacted has been at minimum $2000-$3000, and 90% of these would force us to use their own caterers and vendors. We are ready to try something nonstandard, but I have never even been to a wedding before, so...we am having problems coming up with ideas for a small wedding and reception of like 50 people max. I have a friend who's trying to make waves in the local Atlanta music scene. She does acoustic singer/songwriter stuff and is trying to book more shows. Any advice or good places for her to contact that you would recommend? I've been gone from the city for awhile but mentioned Eddie's Attic as a good option. Thanks!
For Atlanta-area mefites - can anyone recommend a cleaning person? I'm a messy guy looking for someone to come clean/tidy my Midtown apartment once a week. I'd like them to come while I'm at work so ideally I'm looking for a person rather than a service that would send different teams different weeks. So far I've struck out trying to find a solo practitioner on yelp. Anyone with a recommendation?
I'm tagging along with my wife as she goes to a conference in Atlanta this week. We'll be staying Downtown Wednesday through Saturday (leaving Saturday afternoon). What's to do? Caveat: no car. [more inside]
How do I build someone's credit while they are overseas and not a US citizen? I am getting married to someone who is Japanese (in about 5 months) and lives in Japan right now. Because I know we will one day want to buy a house, I want to start building her credit as soon as possible because I know that it is easier to get a loan with two people signing instead of one. I'll be in Atlanta next weekend, and am looking for restaurant recommendations. I'm staying close to the CNN center but will have a car, and am willing to travel for good food. I'm a moderately lax pescatarian. All price ranges welcome. Shrimp and Grits is one of my favorite foods, so if there's a 'Best Shrimp + Grits in Atlanta!' place I'd love to hear about it. Also, if there are any craft brewers/brewpubs in the area making good beer, please tell me who those are as well.
I recently discovered the identity of a long lost relative who is deceased. Apparently he was in and out of prison his whole life for serious crimes. This was in the Atlanta area from the late 50s thru the 80s. Is there any kind of service available that could search local newspapers for articles about his arrests or trials? [more inside]
I'm trying to help a friend find a psychiatrist in the Atlanta area (or northern suburbs) who can evaluate and treat his depression. He's hoping to find someone extremely smart, and he'd probably appreciate someone with impressive training credentials. Meds-only or meds-plus-therapy are both options. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I have inherited multiple generations of household items that I would like to donate to the best possible recipients in Atlanta or sell if there is a market for these items. [more inside]
Due to demands of a random engineering project, I find myself needing to buy large-ish inside diameter (7/8" or greater) latex surgical tubing, hopefully tomorrow. I'm in Atlanta, and don't know the area well, having just moved here a few weeks ago. Home Depot, Lowes, and Wal-mart all seem to sell something like this which is unfortunately nowhere near wide enough for my needs. Does anyone have any leads or suggestions for a brick-and-mortar store where I might be able to find something?
I have some film rolls from several years ago and I'd like to see if it's still good. I'm not sure where in the Atlanta area to get them developed. [more inside]
I'll be in Atlanta, Georgia (US) the second week of September for a work conference. The conference ends on Thursday night, so I'll have all day Friday and Saturday morning to myself. My current to-do list contains one item: visit the aquarium (whale shark!). What else should I see or do while in Atlanta? [more inside]
Planning my wedding in Atlanta - looking for a place for a really, really small wedding that's nice and not too expensive. [more inside]
Very short and to the point question. A family member has been the victim of identity theft, and are doing very poorly in terms of mental health in the process of trying to cope. They have severe phone anxiety, social anxiety, etc, and this is emotionally destroying them. I need a therapist in the Atlanta metro area, preferably Dunwoody/Norcross area that is taking new patients ASAP and who has experience with ID theft and anxiety issues. Bonus if they take Blue Cross Blue Shield GA's Blue Choice POS insurance, but willing to pay if they don't.
I'm in Atlanta for two and a half days for some training. I do not have a car, and I'm about a mile away from both the Buckhead and Lindbergh MARTA stations. I have the evening free after 5 PM today and tomorrow night. What are some good vegetarian-friendly dining options nearby or easily/safely accessible via public transit where a lone casually-dressed traveler wouldn't feel too weird? Is there a nice walkable neighborhood somewhere where I could wander alone, or go for a run? Any other good ideas for entertaining myself in the evening today and tomorrow?
Where can I find raw green peanuts in Atlanta tomorrow? [more inside]
Tuesday morning I need to get from a hotel near the Peachtree Center MARTA stop to the ChocoLate coffee shop in the Shallowford Plaza shopping center. Can I do this on public transit without getting sweaty or stressed out? [more inside]

I'm the Fun Czar for a group of software developers, some of whom are in the Atlanta, GA area. I know nothing about Atlanta or fun stuff to do there. Help! I'm especially interested in activities that will be fun and engaging for a group of approximately 20 people, mostly geeks in their 20s and 30s. I'm interested in both little things (bowling and beer?) that can be done in a couple of hours, and bigger things (sporting events? amusement parks? boat rides?) that would take a full afternoon or all day.
I'm heading to a conference in Athens in the spring and need to get from the airport in Atlanta over to Athens. There are a bunch of services listed on the airport website for regional shuttle service. I'm not picky -- I almost always use a basic shuttle service to get from the airport to a hotel in town, but I've never had as far to travel before. What's your preferred company?
I am interviewing for an assistant professor position at the Emory School of Medicine. My girlfriend and I are visiting Atlanta where we will have a rental car and most of a Saturday to look at various neighborhoods. We're less interested in seeing the inside of apartments and more interested in getting a feel for the neighborhood: what they look like and how people live outside their housing. Can you offer some suggestions on where to drive, walk, eat, drink, and visit to make the most of this day? [more inside]
I am flying to an event out of state in September. I am morally obligated to bring the best bottle of bourbon that I can. It must be bourbon and it must be top shelf. What excellent bourbon can I be assured of getting in the Atlanta area between now and then? Cost is really no object. If I thought I could score a bottle of 23 year old Pappy Van Winkle, I would.
I am starting grad school at Emory U in Atlanta in the fall and am moving there from the northeast with Spouse and 1.5 year old toddler. I am wondering where is best to look for non-university housing (which neighborhoods are best) and child care (child care being our main concern). Thanks in advance, hivemind!
A couple of weeks ago, my wife took mercy on me and told me that my hair looks ridiculous. The words she used were "it's dated" and "sometimes I cringe when you go out like that." OK then, message received. Here's the problem: I have no clue what I would want it to look like. I can fit what I want into three very broad parameters: [more inside]
So, I find myself in a bit of a bad spot at the moment. I'm in need of some serious dental work, and faced with some major hurdles to get it done. I need to find a dentist somewhere in the Atlanta metro that fits a rather restrictive set of criteria. [more inside]
I'm flying from the Birmingham (AL) airport to the Manchester (UK) airport next Friday, with a connecting flight at ATL. There will only be 53 minutes between my first flight arriving at ATL and my second flight departing. What are the chances I'll miss my second flight? [more inside]
I want to treat a friend to a spa day somewhere in the Atlanta area, I haven't lived in Georgia for years. Does anyone have suggestions? We'd be looking in the Virginia Highlands area if we decide to go into town or in the Jonesboro/Stockbridge/McDonough if we don't. [more inside]

I just recently moved to Atlanta (yay) and have been doing some gardening (aside: fellow atlanta mefi-ers please say hi, i need friends here!) Anyway, in pruning the honeysuckle bush outside our place, i found that about half of the plant is entangled in what looks to be some kind of invasive vine whose leaves look like this. I've cut most of it out of the plant now but I'd like to know what it is and what i should be doing to keep it away. I also see it growing up the side of the house a little. Please dont tell me its poison something because i 've been rubbing my hands on it all morning.
Help finding a therapist. Generally or in Atlanta, GA [more inside]
My wife's sister and her new husband live near us in Atlanta. We haven't been that good about spending time with them and are looking for ideas for activities that we could all do together. I guess we're ideally looking for things that are fun, but where everyone can still talk and get to know each other. Bonus points if you can throw in a few ideas that might also be fun for our 4 year old son.
