Hi, I am a high school teacher in the UK (11-18). Can I buy office 365 for mac at (£54) and be eligible to install it? It is unclear about the installation process. I have my school email, bank slips etc. but it is not a .ac address so do I need to get the home and student addition instead? Don't want to waste money either way! Thanks
I'm currently doing iOS development (junior level) as part of my employment as well for personal app development. Is there a guide out there that can help me expand into Mac development using my knowledge of iOS development as a starting point?
I'm a Mac user who prefers touchpads over mice. I'd love to use Apple's Magic Trackpad, but I can't use wireless peripherals where I work. What else is out there that's comparable to the Magic Trackpad that doesn't have bluetooth/RF? [more inside]

Is there a way I can buy a new iPhone 5 (not 5s or 5c), white, 16GB, unlocked, unsubsidized, with support for the T-Mobile's AWS band (some early iPhone 5 models didn't have this, model A1428 added it). [more inside]

I bought a new macbook and it came with a £70 ($110) gift card for use in iTunes, iBookstore, and Mac App store. I have a Macbook air, iPad 3 and iPhone 4, and I'm definitely not making full use of any of them, especially the iPad. I know I can sell it but I'd rather see if there's anything I could use it for first. What should I use the gift card for? [more inside]
Without any warning, my Macbook froze and now won't boot. I'm trying to determine whether it's fixable or a total loss. (Technical details inside.) [more inside]
Have looked up what seems like every bit of help for iMessage, but can't get it to work for us. Situation is: I have an iphone 4GS, latest iOS. iMessage is now working, on my own apple account (firstname.lastname@example.org). Have sim with texts and data included. Husband has my old iPhone 3GS, updated software, iMessage will not work. Is on another apple account (email@example.com). Has sim with texts and data included, same network as mine. Bought my son an iPod touch 4th gen, iMessage will not work. On his own apple account (firstname.lastname@example.org) [more inside]
If I have an update already downloaded OTA but not installed on my iPhone, will updating through iTunes delete the OTA download once the update is done? I want to know this because I tried to install the 7.0.2 update on my iPhone 5S (running 7.0.1) and it was unable to verify the update a number of times when trying to install it. So I plugged it into iTunes and did the update through a Mac. Does the OTA download get deleted on the iPhone when the update is done through the Mac? I don't want to have the update taking up room somewhere on my iPhone.
I forgot that my Apple Magic Mouse was in my front jeans pocket, and it went through the washing machine. Strangely, it still works fine, even with the same batteries. I admit I'm impressed. BUT... [more inside]

This post about gadget fatigue on the blue prompted this question. I just bought the most recent iteration of the iPad. I have an old iPhone and an even older MacBook Pro, and after less than 24 hours with the iPad, I’m getting the impression that the it's superfluous to my life. Please present arguments to the contrary, so that I can make up my mind whether to return it. (I've read this Ask, and this Ask, and this Ask, but the tech changes so quickly that much of what is suggested there is dated, and plenty more apps/uses have come about since those were posted.) I have an ATV2. It asks me to turn on home sharing. I do. ATV insists that i turn on home sharing. It worked in my previous location excepting a few times, where I just unplugged the router and ATV and replugged back in. It worked here on initial setup the first try but a few days later this whole stuff happens. It worked again only after I did a complete factory reset. I have read many of the threads online and perhaps it is a bit of daftness on my part. This previous thread on mefi helped the gentleman with his question. I didn't actually understand it very well. I have an iMac running Snow Leopard. The ATV does connect to Netflix and all other things. Just not my computer. [more inside]
I took a bunch of photos with my iPhone held horizontally, which when imported into iPhoto are now upside down. Last time I did this, and I rotated the photos in iPhoto, the photos then appear upside down when viewing them on the iPhone. Is there any way to get the iPhone to agree with iPhoto on which way is up? Or do I have to create duplicate photos and rotate one so that at least one version is properly viewable on each device? (Also, does anyone have a good trick for remembering what the right position is for the camera eye when holding the iPhone sideways so I don't do this again?)

My friend's daughter is going off to college to major in media studies. What would be the best MacBook -- new or used -- for her? Ideally it would be able to handle video editing, while still being light. It needs to be as cheap as possible, but it should run Mountain Lion so she can get through most of her college career without having to replace it. What do you suggest? (NB The "Mac" part isn't negotiable.)

My early-2007 Macbook Pro is still going strong, besides the fact that it gets very hot and that the battery is kaput. The biggest problem I have with it is that the OS (v.10.5.8) is far enough out of date that I can't update most of my software, and have a hard time acquiring new software. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to the latest version of OS X, or would I be better of just springing for a new mac? [more inside]
I am considering buying a new Macbook Pro with a solid-state drive, but the drives built into the laptop do not offer enough storage for me. If I buy an external Thunderbolt hard drive, will the laptop be able to seamlessly play music and video from files stored on the hard drive, or is there likely to be an annoying lag? Apart from portability, are there any technical issues with relying on an external hard drive for primary storage and everyday use? I am a fairly ordinary but media-heavy user.

This morning I heard a story on NPR that the first ever Apple desktop computer is being auctioned at $600,000ish! I own a PB540c, the first laptop Apple ever made (yes I'm that old and yes I've been an Apple supporter that long). I keep dragging the dang thing around with me, mostly for nostalgic reasons, I think. So now I'm facing yet another move, and was cleaning out my office. I looked at that old laptop and wondered: should I take it with me again? Maybe it will be worth something one day? Truthfully, I'm a minimalist and don't like a lot of "stuff." But somehow I can't seem to part with this useless piece of grey plastic and funky old computer parts. Do you think Apple's PB540c will ever have any value, or should I just chuck it alright already? And get over it.

I have a macbook air and a thunderbolt display and as of today, nothing happens when I plug the thunderbolt into the air-- I've tried resetting the pram/nvram and the smc on the macbook air, unplugging the display for several minutes and plugging it in with the macbook air off and on. System information says that there's nothing connected to the thunderbolt port. It worked just 3 days ago perfectly well, I've never had any problems with it in the year or so that I've had it. The power from the thunderbolt is getting to the air just fine. Anybody have any ideas or do I need to drag the thing in to an apple store?

My old (10+ years) Apple PowerBook G4 won't shut down properly. When I click the apple icon and then click 'shut down' and 'shut down now' (or rather their Dutch-language equivalents), it will remove all icons and other elements from the desktop except the desktop background, and it will darken the background, but it won't shut down. Eventually the screen goes black, but something (a fan?) keeps audibly running. It won't start up in this state. If I unplug it, wait until every activity has died down and the computer doesn't make any sound anymore, plug it back in and wait until the battery has fully loaded again, it will start up as usual. Currently a Microsoft developer looking to expand my horizons into the world of mobile native application development. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I need to scale up to a large external monitor but both the new 27" Apple Cinema Display ($999) and the old 30" one (available on CL) are a bit on the expensive side. Are there comparable quality ones I can get for cheaper? Would love to hear about ones you've tried.
I wrote a polite email to an App seller advising him I would be posting a 1-star review of his app on Apple's App Store. He replied, "Electronic postings of defamation, libel and slander are now well covered under English and European law. My litigation solicitors are [redacted] of London, who have looked after my interests for over twenty years now, nor have ever lost me a case, from individuals to a nation-state. Put up any post and it'll cost you several thousand pounds for each day it stays up; I do hope I make clear..." Can he do this, can I reliably protect myself, and has he violated any Terms and Conditions as a seller on the App Store? Specific reference to English and European Law and Apple App Store Terms and Conditions would be very helpful. Thank you.
I just got a new ipod(classic) today, all the music synced fine and most of my podcasts too. However, i have 18 that won't sync and it keeps saying it can't find them even though they're all right there on itunes as i just downloaded them. I made sure everything was up to date, and even restarted itunes but still nothing. If it matters i'm using a mac(2007/08?), with itunes 11.0.3, snow leopard. Is there anyway i can get them to sync?
I think the time has come for me to jump the iPhone ship. The announcement of the Google version of the Galaxy S4 at I/O was the clincher. But I am not 100% sold on the idea, mainly because the S4 is an ugly brute, but also because I fear for the apps and innovation I will miss. Help me out, specifically in finding a worthy replacement for my beloved Mailbox app. [more inside]
I recently acquired a new MacBook Pro, with a retina display. It's a sealed unit, with no user-replaceable battery, so I'm obviously interested in maintaining the battery life. I noticed that the new T-shape mag safe connector is not very grippy, and falls out all the time. So I called Apple to see whether the constant unplugging/plugging was a bad idea, and the rep actually said at one point that it was a bad idea to keep the laptop plugged in when it was charged (with the green LED showing in the adapter). I confirmed that this was what he was saying. So does anyone know if this is true? Because I've always kept my laptops plugged in, all the time. [more inside]

Greetings - I "inherited" a MacBook Pro last year. It was a Apple MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz from Spring 2008. So it was 4 years old when I got it and I was told that the battery was dead and as long as I kept it plugged in, it worked fine, however, I would need a new one. So last year, I purchased a new battery and installed it. However, I am still noticing that the battery life is horrible. It seems like when I am using it to type a document or check emails and surf the web, etc, I literally can watch the battery drain. I would assume that it might hold a charge of about an hour and a half maybe? Is there any way I can "test" it to see what my actual battery life if? To ensure there isn't something else going on? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks,

I have an iMac using Snow Leopard. I use my apartment public w-fi and it has worked fine up to a few months back. This happens no matter how small I make the partition. [more inside]
Hi there, I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro, which is getting noticeably slower, the battery needs replacing and the fan is extremely noisy. All this has lead me to believe that this laptop is coming to the end of its "natural" lifespan and I will soon be due an upgrade (however I accept I may be wrong here). Coupled with this, I am about to move into a new place, meaning I will have a lot less need for a portable laptop, since I will be working from home most days. With this in mind, I was thinking about getting a desktop iMac as my "main" computer and using my old MacBook as and when I needed to. So my question is, should I... A) Attempt to prolong my MacBooks life by having it serviced / refurbished, and buy a desktop monitor to plug it into when I work from home. B) Buy a new MacBook Pro, and a desktop monitor (because this would be cheaper than the third option, which is to...) C) Buy a desktop iMac, and continue to use my old MacBook as a spare / portable option. Thanks.
I have an iPhone5 and an original iPad, which I back up to my PC (running iTunes on Windows XP). However, now when I plug in either device to the PC and start iTunes, all the data is listed as "Other" (in an orange bar across the bottom of the window). Further, when I click "Back Up Now" the sync begins, then stops after a second or two with no error message. Can I recover from this without losing my data? [more inside]
Reinstalled Snow Leopard but ejected my external drive before this. Then, when done, plugged back in via USB as my usual custom....and Time Machine still shows up, but the External Seagate drive does not. I made sure that in Finder/Preferences that the external disc box as others was checked. I tried a different cord, and different port. I opened up Disc Utility and the External HD's partioned Time Machine is available but the other part, now renamed something else (a default name from manufacturer?) is greyed out and I cannot touch it. Any thoughts? Should i now go to the boot disc of Snow Leopard? Not sure why TM shows but the rest does not.
