I just switched to Macs and I was a Windows power user (video editing, audio editing, scanning, graphic design, presentations, flowcharting, spreadsheets, databases, web design). What software can I absolutely not live without for the Mac? Being a fan of Open Source software (and excessively cheap) I'd prefer open source apps when possible.

Playing with the new version of Apple's Keynote I'm really impressed with the software. However, I never really have cause to do a presentation needing slides. Still, Keynote being part of the iWork suite I have it anyway, and it seems like a waste not to use it.
What other sorts of things, besides, presentations, could an individual use Keynote for?

I have installed DVD Studio Pro 4 on my Powerbook, as part of the Final Cut Studio Pro 5 suite. However, the templates or styles didn't install and I don't have a "Content" icon on the install disk. Is it possible to get the folders of templates and styles from someone? I don't want a copy of your disk or to do anything illegal, but if someone had the program installed and could copy only those folders, I don't think it would constitute copyright infringement ... or would it?

Am I bogging down my new iMac with software? I have a 20" Intel iMac with 512mb (adding another 1mb as soon as my Amazon rebate comes). I love it! I have a Palm Zire that I sync with my iBook. Calendar and To Dos sync with iCal and Address Books sync well, but I have to view my memos in the big bloated Palm Desktop. Is there an app for Mac to sync with Memos? Version Tracker has this but I have always disliked Stickies, and would prefer a nice little app with a list of my memos all in one place if such a thing exists. Suggestions?

Tidying my email: Over the years I've developed hundreds of different folders for messages. They're currently all in Mail.app's MBOX format. I want to sort them into one big gmail-style archive folder, and get rid of the many, many duplicates.

In iTunes, why do songs I uncheck not play during shuffled playback? I just want to uncheck songs I don't want on the iPod and let 'em play normally in the library. It's easier than making a playlist for the iPod each time I add new albums. Alternatively, how do you manage your library when it exceeds the size of your iPod?

Academics and scholars: anyone familiar with the text processing product on Windows called Nota Bene? A friend is switching to Macintosh and it's an application area I don't have a lot of experience with. In particular, he likes the fact that Nota Bene stores citation information separate from the formatting, so switching from MLA to APA (?) is easy to do... Any suggestions welcomed.
