My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]
I really like the music in Apple's "Aluminum" video for the Apple Watch. Unfortunately, AppleMusic.info has no information about this video. Any idea who the artist might be?

I recently upgraded my MacBook Air to Yosemite. Everything seems to be fine, except for the fact that my iPhones text messages now happen on my computer (I think this is the continuity feature?). Anyway, I want this to stop. Of course, I Googled it before I posted, here, but the fixes that I found, don't appear to be relevant (they were from 2014 and probably from Mavericks). For example, one fix suggested opening the Messages app on your Mac (which I did) and open the Preferences menu, which I don't see. Can anyone help me stop this?? Thanks!
In the current MacBook Pro lineup, there's a $100 dollar price jump between the 2.9Ghz i5 processors and 3.1 Ghz i7 processors on the 128GB and 256GB models, but a $200 difference for the same upgrade on the 512GB model, all other specs remaining the same. Is there any reason for this, aside from Apple deciding that people willing to spend that much simply won't mind paying another $100?
I've made good money buying Apple stock on major downturns over the years. I'd like to do this more granularly, but don't have time (or day-trading skills or platform) to relentlessly buy minor downward blips and sell the recoveries. What's the easiest, most convenient, automated and newbie-friendly way to do this? Or, better: is there a way to piggyback on other's efforts (e.g. is there a fund operating according to this same thesis)? [more inside]

So this is a weird one - on occasion, my own computer loses connection to my WiFi signal - whereas my roommate, who sometimes is logged on to the same network via the same signal and sometimes IN THE SAME ROOM - does NOT. Please suggest where I should look to start diagnosing the problem. [more inside]

I recently upgraded a few steps in my Mac life and have an problem I need to solve. I send out a simple newsletter to some subcribers that I create in dreamweaver- save as an html- then open in safari and, until recently, used the "Mail Contents of this Page" option that my older version of safari had, that would open apple mail and then send.. It seems that safari no longer has that option OR am I missing something. [more inside]

Fixing some information in a scanned document. Screen shows a perfect seamless page but when printed the blocks I changed show up lighter. Is there some way I can fix this?
I've become obsessed with the Health app on my iPhone. I get that it probably uses GPS to calculate how far I'm walking/running in a day. But how does it know with crazy precision, how many flights of stairs I've gone up? What else can I get it to do, and how can I get the most out of this app? [more inside]
So four years ago, I wrote this love letter to Steve Jobs when he died. I admired that man, but the major thing missing was that I didn't own anything made by Apple, apart from an old generation iPod. I said, someday. Well that day has finally arrived. Any tips to make my transition easier? What other accessories/necessities should I buy? [more inside]
This makes no sense to me, but I have lost a super important email I just received by accidentally hitting the "K" key while it was highlighted in my Apple Mail inbox. It is my only copy of an important day-long interview for an academic job. I have tried searching Mail by sender and subject, searching my computer for same including searching content, looking in Mail's trash folder. The Finder's trash is empty. I am stumped, and worried. I really don't want to write back to say that I lost the email. Where could it be??

I tried to see if I could infuse some bland mixing gin (Gordon's ) with more of the aggressive, 'gin-y' spice flavor I like. So I threw in juniper berries, mulling mix (cinnamon, allspice, orange peel, etc) cardamon pods, lemon peel, and peppercorn and let them sit. Now I have a spicy, cardamon-y, assertive, and very bitter tawney gin. What can I mix with this/how can I use it? [more inside]

I'm finding it confusing to to pick out the best quality tablet in this price range that will run Hearthstone well, do you have a suggestion? I am open to Windows, Android, or Apple. If I understand correctly, the Hearthstone app is not out for Android yet but it should be available soon.

My iPad insists that I'm using almost all of my available hard drive space. But I have no idea how, and the app-by-app breakdown purporting to show what's eating the storage doesn't add up to anything close to the 22+ GB it claims I'm using. Here's a screenshot. (Scrolling down shows only a couple more apps using very small amounts of storage.) What could be going on here? How can I figure out what's eating my hard drive space? I have no music or video on the device as far as I can tell.
My iPad 3 (the first retina) running iOS 8.1 will drop the wi-fi connection fairly regularly. This often happens when streaming video via BBC iPlayer or YouTube apps. Any suggestions on how to fix it? [more inside]
My Airport Extreme (A1143 model) is having issues in our new house. It was built in the 50's so the floor has lots of metal in it due to the plastering of the ceiling below. We get wifi in part of the finished basement but no the whole thing, and even the "good" part drop pretty frequently. [more inside]
Recently got a new iPhone 6 from Sprint. Today I went to the Find My iPhone app for the first time and someone else's email address is in the email field although it is not logged in. Why is that? No one has had access to my phone. The email address in question is email@example.com if it matters. Maybe I'm dumb and this is standard, but I couldn't find any answers on Google.
I'm looking at buying a low-end Macbook for web browsing and MS Office (primarily Powerpoint). Basically, it's coming down to a 2009 or 2010 Macbook, as I'd prefer to run Yosemite, but I want to keep my budget below $500. I have used a friend's 2009 Macbook fairly regularly and I'm happy with its general performance, but I have a few specific questions. [more inside]
My iPhone 5S has a ton of stuff in "Other" storage (iTunes screenshot); I don't even have disk space to do the latest iOS update. I see this is a common problem, surely some of you have a solution? [more inside]
I typically carry my iPhone in my pants pocket and not infrequently take it out to find that it has successfully bypassed the four digit lock code needed to wake it up, activated an app, and successfully given itself several meaningless - but potentially consequential - commands. I can think of at least two reasons why this should not be possible, but it happens on average a couple times a week. What the hell is going on? [more inside]
I have a 2006 Mac Pro 1.1 (specs below the fold) which I understand can't be upgraded to current OS versions without a CPU replacement. I'm not sure if I can replace the CPU, or if that would even be sufficient to upgrade to a current Mac OS. How hard would it be to change the CPU, and what is my best option if I can't / won't change it? [more inside]
First, this is not a gigantic deal. I have all my data backed up via CrashPlan, I do most of my computing on a MBP Retina that's about 6 months old, and I've hardly used the Mini at all in that time. My question is what I can best do with the doorstop my Mac Mini now is. [more inside]
I recently upgraded my iMac to OSX 10.9.5. Since the upgrade, my second monitor (ViewSonic VG2230wm attached through a DVI-Firewaire adapter) flashes to a black screen intermittently. I recently bought a preowned Mac Pro that is wiped clean except for the OS. I need some guidance on how to configure it to optimize its awesomeness for video editing. The OS is installed on a 128GB SSD. It has three other drives (2x640GB, 1x500GB). How should I use the other drives? Where should the applications live? Backup space? Scratch disk? In case it's relevant, here are some other specs: 22GB RAM, 2x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. Thanks!
I need a network forensic specialist with Apple experience in South Florida. What qualifications am I looking for? Everybody I can find only knows Windows environment. I'm a non-tech person and don't even know what questions to ask or where to start looking. Thanks!
Updated my iPhone software the other day (iPhone 5) and now the sideswipe gesture seems to be on a hair trigger. There's a couple frequently-used apps I have where swiping in from the right with one finger allows you to delete a line; now instead it swipes the whole screen forward (into the next day on the calender, for example). Ditto in zoom --- if I'm zoomed in on a page with small print in Safari, I can't seem to move the page over to see the right hand side without Safari taking this as a "next" gesture and loading up a whole new page. Is there anyway I can disable a particular gesture in iOS8? Or has Apple changed something so that I'm supposed to be using two fingers or double tapping or some such in order to get back my "delete a single line" functionality? [more inside]
Normally I’d solve this by myself, but a severe bout of depression is making it impossible for me to think clearly. I’m so overwhelmed I’m barely keeping myself from bursting into tears at work. I’m basically asking AskMe to proofread my plan, point out vital information I’m missing, and let me know if there’s anything else I haven’t considered. Please keep your responses simple--providing links to websites with directions is fine, so long as you're sure that those instructions are RIGHT. Details inside. [more inside]

I recently installed IOS 8 on my iPhone. Unlike some, I had no trouble with the download per se. However, none of the new features seem to be present; and while it says on the software update page that it has been downloaded, the little 'number 1' is still showing up on the settings page. FWIW, the iCloud backup button (with the option to turn it on or off) seems 'frozen' as well. Might anyone have any ideas?
