Down to the wire

I'm looking for an Oct. 1st roommate share in Brooklyn, and so far I'm coming across shockingly few places listed on Craigslist. Is there another list I'm not aware of? I already put word out to my network. Details: -- I've lived in BK for six years (Crown Heights + Park Slope), and have never had trouble finding a place before. --Budget is $1100 and under. --Looking to stay for 6 months or longer --I'm searching under "rooms & shares" AND "sublets & temporary" Thanks!!

Darling, I am sorry, but I lost my key! (another NYC apartment hunting ?)

2 years ago while looking for NYC apartments I came across an Upper East Side Broker's office that allowed me to leave my license and in return get a list of apartment rentals and keys to check them out that afternoon, by myself with no agent. Now I need to actually make the NYC move. Help me find a place that will do this? please? [more inside]

Search for apartments by age of building?

I'm looking for an apartment in Los Angeles and I have noticed that the niceness of a building has a strong correlation with its newness. (Or age, if it dates to the 20s-30s.) Redfin allows you to search for houses by year built; is it possible to do the same for apartments? None of the apartment-hunting sites I've seen (PadMapper &c) have this feature.

Help With Apartment Hunting in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Moving to New York from Florida to take a job at the beginning of January, and i'm having some trouble finding a good place to live, mostly that I don't really know how to find good places that aren't on craigslist/padmapper. The friend i'm going to live with works in Greenpoint, so we're leaning heavily on that neighborhood, just off the Greenpoint or Nassau stops, so only one of us has to take the subway to work. Moving to San Francisco in June, how soon should we look for an apartment?

Moving to San Francisco for work in June, when should we look for an apartment? We can fly down for a weekend in April or May, or we can look once we get there and stay at a hotel/hostel in the meantime. What's going to be the best way to find a good place? We want to live in the city.

Where can we stay in Amsterdam?

Myself, my partner and a two of our friends have booked flights to Amsterdam for a week's break away and we need to find somewhere to stay. Ideally, we were thinking about an apartment so we can actually live there for a week rather than just stay; hotels and hostels are all well and good but it would be great to be able to cook and have a space to relax. Bad Apartments

I'm interested in stories about living in apartments where something bad has happened. Apartments with gnarly histories. Murders, suicides, 'haunted' apartments, whatever. Did it affect the value? Did you learn about it only later? Did you hire an exorcist? Did a new paint job suffice? etc. Anyone have such stories, or know of such?

What's the best way to find an apartment in NYC?

NYCaptFilter: I'm moving to NYC (yay!) and sorry, but I'm going to drive you all nuts with questions for the next few weeks. #1: Best way to find an apartment? I know the city, but would like tips on finding a good place. Broker? Classified listings? Pitfalls to avoid? How do I find something rent stabilized? Any opinion about rentdirect.com? I promise to host a meetup when I get settled.

Was my landlord out of line to pass my key to another tenant?

TenantFilter: So I gave permission for the building manager to let a contractor into my apartment to do some fix up work. Not only does she not let him in personally, which is what I thought I okayed, but she leaves the key to another tenant to pass on to the contractor when he shows up. Am I overreacting in thinking that was way out of line? How do I go about responding to something like this? [more inside]

Partitioning a large studio apartment

I'm moving into NYC for the first time. It's a studio, but a relatively large one, and I'd like to partition it. I've looked mainly at shoji screens, but I'd rather not take up the extra space with the accordion footprint. I don't want to spend a huge amount of money, or do anything that requires a permit. What are some creative options?; for_name=condour75 [more inside]
