I want to connect from a Mac OS X machine to a Windows XP running XAMPP (Apache, MySQL, PHP), in order to use an application running on the Windows machine.
At the same time, I want to have the Mac OS X allowing Internet browsing, while Windows should be isolated from the Internet.
Can it be done in some way, or can you suggest a possible setup close to that purpose?

Help me set up a simple 100% caching forward proxy for my home. I dicked around with squid and then apache+mod_proxy/mod_cache yesterday afternoon, and while they proxy
beautifully, they don't seem to have much cache hit even on static content- almost or completely 0% cache hit.

Can you help me understand how to approach a couple issues of server security. (1) I want to run things in 'silos', so that if someone from the web has hacked and has code level access to example.com/blog they can't query the db of example.com/app (2) If they do get access to a user database, how do I make it harder for them to figure out passwords (beyond just storing them as md5)?

I have a
really weird Apache/PHP problem. Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server, fairly typical webhosting setup. One of our sites returns 404s randomly through the day, typically late at night, but sometimes in the morning. It'll do this for an hour or two and then start working all on it's own. The other sites are fine.

My limited Google-fu is no match for this particular problem, so I'm hoping the folks at AskMeFi can tell me how I should setup Apache so that http://my-vps-ip goes to http://mysite.com and not the subdomain?

I am new to this and need to get this done soon. So I would really appreciate some advice. I am trying to setup a reverse proxy for our intranet and have been playing around with mod_proxy and mod_proxy_html for Apache. It all seems to work on regular html pages fine. But when I get to RSS/ATOM feeds mod_proxy_html does not seem to work. Any advise how can I do it ? I saw there is something called mod_proxy_xml. But not sure it will do the job and I dont have a build setup to quickly build it for Ubuntu. Would really appreciate some tips and pointers. I am sure others have done this already.

How can we automatically block DOS type attacks in a load balanced environment? We used to have mod_evasive on Apache, but now Apache is behind a a load balancer and so does not see the external IPs. We are manually blacklisting IPs in Shorewall - but would like something on the load balancer to do this automatically on detection. Running Linux, Shorewall, Apache and Pound as load balancer.
