On Friday, my building will receive a much-welcome visit from The Exterminator. That means that I'll have to be out of my loft for about three hours with Garbo, Queen of All She Surveys. We can't really go to a neighbor's because the whole building is being treated, and so far none of my friends have offered to host a visit. Anyone have any suggestions about where I can go in LA with a pissed-off cat, preferably air-conditioned? [more inside]
I know you are not my lawyer, etc. We have had a serious family death and I need to pack up everything to move across country in the next few days, for an undetermined amount of time (6 months, one year?), but I am supposed to show up here in small claims court in July. Need advice. [more inside]
If all goes according to plan, I will be in LA for one Saturday in March (work related travel, spare day). I'll be downtown and will need either to walk, use a city bike or take whatever public transit there is. What should I do? What should I eat? Should I buy things, and if so, what? [more inside]
We are completely lost for ideas. The last 4 years our non-profit group has held our holiday party at a Thai restaurant, at which, 2 employees couldn't eat because, peanuts. Our budget is around $42 per person (give or take). We are 30 employees. We need a private room. We are located in West L.A. Staff is willing to travel as far south as Culver City-ish. [more inside]

I'm itching for change and would like to move to preferably in the next year. I'm looking into San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City and Portland. I've moved before and to different states/ cities, but this would be the biggest move ever in my life. I need advice on how to find jobs out of state, finding a place to live, and how to get all my junk across country as well. Is it easier to just save up a bunch and move and find a job when I get settled or should I try to get a job and then use that opportunity to move? Any tips or advice would be appreciated. I'm having brunch in Santa Barbara this weekend, and then driving back to Los Angeles where I live. After brunch I'd like to drive for a while into the wilderness, park my car, and then ride my rigid frame mountain bike on some scenic single track (or fire roads, sure) for a few hours before heading home. Where should I go? [more inside]
I am in search of a boardroom/conference room space (accommodating max. 10 people for a meeting for 2-half days) in downtown Los Angeles. Any recommendations? Especially for rentals under a $250 day rate with wifi and water at the location. Thank you.
I've been going to a repair shop here in LA for a while that I found through the Car Talk fora, but have been increasingly unhappy with them. I took my girlfriend's 2002 Ford Focus in to get an estimate on replacing the mirror, and got back a quote of $175ish, $100 for the part and $75 for the labor (meaning, an hour and a quarter for them at $60 per hour). The thing is, there are third-party mirrors for about $30, and from doing the same thing on a car years ago, I remember it taking about 20 minutes with the right tools. Are they trying to rip me off? Is this a reasonable ballpark for what seems like pretty minor work (the whole assembly pops on and off)? I don't have the tools to do this now (I'd need a deeper socket), so should I buy the part and take it to them? Are dealer mirrors really that superior? (It's out of warranty by now, obviously.) Should I take it to someone else? [more inside]

I'm looking for a resource that lists Los Angeles city street names and their origin/namesake. There's an old Angelfire site that does exactly what I'm looking for, but only for a few major streets. Where can I find information similar to what that site offers, but for lesser-known streets?
Having spent my entire life doing what was expected of me when and where I was supposed to do it and clinging fairly tightly to my parents and home life, I'd like to take the next year or so to inject some vigor and excitement into my young years before I settle for the rat race to the picket fence with my . I'm thinking the most drastic and simultaneously safest way to do this would be to spend time in California. I've been there twice and loved it each time. Trouble is that, given my unique set of circumstances, that's starting to look more like a pipe dream than a feasible reality. Is there any hope of finding a good, well-developed reason to move out there own my own, at least for a year? [more inside]
I'm trying to find an infant daycare in West Los Angeles - and I've applied to 2 places (with a total of 4 locations), but evidently the wait lists are somewhere between 1 and 3 years. At which point my future child will no longer be an infant, and also I need to go to work. LA parents, please help a clueless newbie! [more inside]
I am producing a TEDx like event entitled "Visionary Graphic Design - The Los Angeles Influence" A friends of mine requested a list of past and present graphic design/ designers /LA designers / agencies / brands from the area. This is what I have so far for artists: Saul Bass, John Van Hamersveld, Ed Ruscha, Gary Baseman, Charles and Ray Eames, Sister Corita. Any other suggestions of artists/agencies/brands?
So I've been hiking around Griffith Park lately and really want to drag up my camera and tripod to take a decent panoramic/wide shot of the Los Angeles basin from Mount Hollywood or the observatory. The problem is it's always hazy. How can I time things to get the best clarity for a photo op? [more inside]
So, I'm running a bit late in making my hotel reservation for E3 and the nicer down-town Los Angeles hotels are booked. Any recommendations on where to look if I expand my search radius? I will need to be on-site at the convention center, so I suppose that car-free would be best... but open to suggestions. (I'd prefer not to be by the airport). Cost isn't a major factor, but probably wouldn't go as high as the Four Seasons for example. thoughts? I'll have a day or so available for touristy stuff, so those suggestions are welcome as well. thank you!
Looking for a non-sketchy, reputable urgent care walk-in clinic near downtown LA. Need a cortisone shot and painkiller. Thanks!
You're considering a move to Los Angeles for a job in Irvine. You and your (stay-at-home) wife are both in your early 30s, and have two young (under two years old) children. You were raised in the midwest, and prefer the suburbs. You want to live in an area that has lots of other young families and easy access to eating and shopping and preschools and other things like that. You don't want to spend more than 30 minutes or so commuting. You want to spend about $3,000 per month on rent for a 3+ bedroom single-family-home (or condo, you suppose). What areas of Los Angeles do you focus on?
LAX is the closest airport to where I am staying (near USC). Planning on flying in on a Saturday (Mother's Day weekend) and leaving Tuesday. What time should I time my flight to arrive so as to not be in traffic for hours? [more inside]
I hate my job. HATE my job. I've worked here for 21 years, doing soul crushing work for the state court system. I haven't had a pay raise in seven years, not even a cost of living raise, have had my benefits scaled back and am looking at an even greater workload due to potential layoffs for my fellow employees unlucky enough to have been here as long as I have. Is there any chance that I can pick up stakes, move to Los Angeles, and hope to find a job paying me something comparable to what I currently make? (I apologize for the blizzard of snow flakes within) [more inside]

I bought a print of a painting I love in the only format available: A full bleed art show poster on glossy 11"x17" bond. The painting reproduction is approximately the top half of the poster, say 10"x8". I can clearly see the grain of the canvas in the print, and it is entirely possible that the original painting is not much larger than the reprint. So my question is, is it feasible to have this print blown up to twice or thrice it's size without sacrificing quality? [more inside]
