I purchased the Monoprice Hybrid Tube Amp with Bluetooth recently and want to upgrade the tubes. Please help! [more inside]
Analog BKNY is a relatively new club in Gowanus. Some DJs I like will be there soon, but I'm having a hard time figuring out if it's the kind of club that a skinny computer nerd like me can just go to or if there's going to be, like, hostile bouncers and weird status judgments. Any Brooklyn MeFites who've been there and can comment on the general vibe?
I'm a musician, working on someone's project where the sound needs to be very accurate to the recording techniques and sound of a specific time period in the early 80s. There are many steps in the recording process, but the sound of old tape is one of the more difficult ones to get right. Even if no one here has an answer, I would love to be in touch with someone who knows what happens chemically to analog tape as it ages (under normal storage conditions), and whether it's possible to mimic that process chemically with a new reel of tape. Thanks!
The KORG minilogue is a really sweet modular, analogue synthesiser. It must, I think, have a hybrid (digital / analogue) architecture, and that raises a bunch of UI / UX questions... [more inside]
How did people organize tasks, reference materials, records, and projects before the widespread advent of computers? And how did they learn these techniques? [more inside]
Inspired by this thread about unintentional historical double entendres, I'm looking for a science fiction short story that was published twenty or so years ago. [more inside]
I have a Marantz PM4001 amplifier and pair of bookshelf speakers that I've not used for months, as my new media center setup does not have analog outputs. Should I buy a digital-to-analog converter (which needs its own power supply), or should I just simplify my whole setup? (E.g. just rely on the TV's built-in speakers.) I have kind of got out of the habit of listening to music and am not sure I need this anymore. [more inside]
I need a help adjusting an analog weather station. [more inside]
I build up quite a bit of reading in my online skimming, but I want to be able to export all that into some kind of newspapery or magaziney template that I can print out and read in the paper-world. Reading off a screen just isn't doing it for me anymore. [more inside]
I want to read scholarly work about why doing things with "digital" tools (like word processors or MIDI music keyboards) is experienced differently from doing things with "analog" tools (like typewriters or pianos). [more inside]
I need to buy a tape recorder to do interviews with people in punk bands. I'd love if it was also loud enough at playback to function as an extremely crummy tape player so I can transcribe the tapes without headphones or listen to cassettes in my room (this magically started working again, but it's only hooked up in my living room). Which standard recipes, with meat as a key ingredient, have clear vegetarian analogs? Examples, to be clear: for every hamburger, there is a veggie burger (eggplant, cauliflower, etc). Chili con carne becomes chili sin carne. For meatloaf there is Neatloaf. What else should I be thinking of? "Buy fake meat" is not heading in the right direction; "google 'vegetarian [meaty food]'" is a realistic suggestion but which foods?
I traveled to DC, SF, NYC, and a few other cities taking photos with a film camera... and I can't tell where this photo's from. City-identifiers with good memories, help me!
I'm trying to identify a story from my adolescence. It started with an elderly woman realizing she wasn't able to shovel her walk. Her options were to use a snowblower given her by one concerned child/grandchild, or to use a bottle of pills given by another. The pills contained nanobots, and they made her feel so well that she was not only able to do the snow, but began changing her life and having adventures. She continued to age, but technology kept ahead of her, extending her life, until she was one of the oldest humans on earth, and then beyond. [more inside]
So, I run everything in my life through my mac computer. My television programming, my music, et cetera. I listen to a lot of online radio throughout the day. I would really like to "flip on" a program (or set of programs) with a single analog switch. [more inside]
I'm putting together a stereo system that only needs to be able to play cassette tapes and vinyl records, because yes I am that much of a hipster. I have my speakers and turntable, and I just picked up a 1970s receiver with integrated cassette deck...which stopped working almost immediately. How do you go about buying something with many breakable, moving parts that stopped being manufactured with any quality in the 1980s? Should I replace my receiver with just a receiver and get a standalone tape deck? Where do you even buy a standalone tape deck? [more inside]
Last phone service I had was Comcast voice. I discontinued it and returned the black box that was mounted in the rafters in the basement. Now I want to add an analog POTS line. I ordered it from Verizon, and they say it was activated, but when I plug an old trimline phone into one of my jacks, I get no dial tone. Was there something else I need to do to restore analog phone capability besides just unplug the black box?
I'm a software engineer who loves having the latest gadgets and spends much of my time online; she's a stay-at-home mom who avoids the Internet like the plague. This causes problems when it comes to our calendar. [more inside]

Some time ago, likely in the 90s, I read a less than novel length sci-fi story, about a man whose job was cleaning up high-energy physics projects after the fall of third world dictators. The main plot point was a black hole being used to generate electricity through the penrose process. It was likely in analog magazine. Does anyone remember this, or similar stories?

My goal is the detection of small temperature variations over a larger area than a single one would allow, monitored by a computer. What sensor do they use? I saw IR thermocouples on the web (starting at $150) and the fact these consumer devices are often under $30 leads to believe they are not using this, but something a lot cheaper. [more inside]

Can you point me to any good writing (research-based, speculative, or heck, even fictional) about the potential historical permanence or impermanence of digital media? I'm interested in both professional (theatrical movies, book publishing, maps...) and personal (digital snapshots, Livejournal, email...) forms of digital information storage. [more inside]

Looking for an Analog short story, circa 1960. All life on earth is destroyed by mankind. One man escapes in a rocket. He knows he can't survive in space. Crash-lands on the now barren rock that used to be the earth. His is pursued by an animal, which he kills. (I don't remember whence the animal.) He goes to an ocean to die, knowing that the bacteria in his body will act to "reseed" the earth. [more inside]
I would like to route standard def DVD playback straight into iMovie on the cheap. I have a FireWire 2007 MacBook. Thinking about an obsolete, second-hand DV camera (and connecting DVD player to it), but don't know what models to look for. I'm also open to suggestions for software or other hardware. Please help me work out what I really need. [more inside]

I'm working on a project where I need photo and video reference of a large split-flap display in action, like those old Solari departure boards that used to grace train stations and airports. Where can I still find one in use? High quality video or film references would also be welcome (like if you can think of an old movie where these are featured in action). [more inside]
Does anyone know of or recommend a good flash-memory hi-def camcorder that has AV input? (ie it can also record regular/analogue video from another source, like a VCR does, though obviously it won't be in HD). Something like the Aiptek A-HD+ meets the flash/HD/AV-in criteria, but I'm hoping to find something with better optics/zoom/stabilization. [more inside]
