Americorps HELP

Recent college grad, not at all moving forward with my life, and I'm interested in Americorps. I need a change. I want a big change, something challenging and very unlike what I'm used to. I'm overwhelmed and don't know how to begin going about this. HELP. [more inside]

Finding entry-level nonprofit work

I’m trying to figure out the best way into nonprofit work, ideally grant writing and development. Most of my work history has been in retail and food service, but I’ve been volunteering for a tiny Friends of the Library group for the past year. Where should I be looking for work? Americorps? Keep refreshing Idealist.org like a madwoman? [more inside]

Is Americorps a good experience?

Since I got out of the Navy, I've been having trouble making ends meet, and I would like to be able to stay in school. Now there are two different Americorps positions opening up near me, both doing Veterans Outreach, that would pay a living stipend, and after a year award a tuition voucher. I would like to hear all of your Americorps experiences, both good and bad. How did they manage your hours? How much freedom did you have to choose your own work? Were you able to stay in school at a reduced load or take a second job? What else have I forgotten to ask? [more inside]

Looking for Great Software for Volunteer Management

Can you all recommend a great volunteer management software for a non-profit? I'm an AmeriCorps volunteer coordinator and we have over 200 volunteers that I have to track, including their hours, activities, etc. If it's a free software, that would be even better. What software have you guys had a great experience with? Thanks!

Quit my job and join Americorps?

I'm thinking of quitting my job to join Americorps, a program where you volunteer for a non-profit for a year and get paid a small living stipend. Am I completely out of my mind? Here's my background. I graduated from a small liberal arts college with a degree in a social science about 6 years ago and took an office job just to be able to pay my student loans and get health insurance. Should I quit Americorps?

I am currently an Americorps VISTA member and I do not like my assignment. This is a year-long commitment, and I have @7 months left to serve. VISTA members work full-time but are paid very little because the position is kind of a cross between a volunteer position and a job. The reason for taking a VISTA position, therefore, is not the pay, but rather the job experience and the opportunity to do meaningful work to help the poor. Unfortunately, I am not getting much of that experience or doing much of that work, and I am disrespected to boot. [more inside]
