Quadcopters are cool and everything, but I find exploring the ocean a way more interesting proposition. I want to start making autonomous underwater vehicles.
Are there forums for people who are doing this? I've googlebinged for sites and people that are into this, but no dice. It seems like everyone involved is a closed academic research project, or a government body.
Basically looking for a forum of people to discuss ideas with.

What kind of equipment could I purchase within a $300 budget for the backdrop and lighting? My house is naturally very dark. I use white plates and minimal props for the food. My camera is a Canon 40D. I don't have much time lately so I'll spend a little more for convenience.

How do you spot an amateur in your trade, profession, or hobby? Specifically, what are some examples of things that people without experience do, while attempting what you do or know well, because they don't know any better that make their lack of experience obvious?

Are there any videos on YouTube similar to
Great Depression Cooking, in that they feature completely amateur cooking? I mean people without great knife technique or whatever, just cooking regular meals in small regular kitchens like the rest of regulars, fearlessly and worrying not so much about presentation or perfection?

Someone I know who is a volunteer would like a copy of the REACT/Red Cross produced video "Where Seconds Count". He had been told he could view it online, but repeated online searches have failed to find it, and neither the Red Cross nor individual REACT organizations seem to be selling physical copies via their websites. I've been trying to help him find it, but have had no luck. Anybody?

photo blog filter: I enjoy the history site
shorpy quite a bit, but I also really like the member gallery (button on left side of main page; not sure why my link here isn't sticking), where contributors post family photos and other sorts of everyday images along with the date of origin and some background info, etc. What other blogs/websites do this kind of thing? Which ones do you like? (Interested in 40s-80s U.S. mostly, but some variation is fine.)

I'm an amateur classical pianist. I used to give solo recitals at college, and I would like to start performing again out here in the real world. But what sort of group/organisation/event do I need to get involved with to have this kind of opportunity? Could I organise a little independent recital for myself, or is that weird and too egotistical?
