I have to move clean out my mother's house in another state. She just moved into assisted living for Alzheimer's Disease last weekend. It will be an emotional week where I will need a lot of support. My brother has been in an on again off again relationship with a woman for the past five years. He was off for the past six months or so and moved in to help take care of Mom, but now they are back together and spending all their time together. SHe is annoying, crazy, doesn't work and last year punched an 87 year old family friend in the face. Anyway, my partner/girlfriend has said she will only go down and help me and my brother clean out the house if she has the right to never see my brother's girlfriend. Meaning I rent her a car and she leaves anytime this woman comes around. I think that this is going to cause a lot of drama, but I completely understand where she is coming from. I really need her there, but I am really afraid that WW3 will break out and I will be in more hot water. ANy ideas?

How should I deal with my Alzheimer's father? I have had problems with my father going back ages. He has been verbally, emotionally, and physically abusive to not only me, but my sibling and mother as well. I had almost convinced my mom to leave him when he got Alzheimer's, and now we're stuck caring for him. [more inside]

Alzheimer's/Dementia Filter: Anyone have experience with an elderly relative who takes risperidone (risperdal) for agitation and anxiety during the night? My dad (with Alzheimer's) was put on half a milligram per day, starting tonight. Just wondering if you have anecdotal success or failure stories. I know it's used for other mental illnesses, but want to know specifically about the night-time agitation relief with dementia.

As Alzheimers progresses do a persons IQ drop? Does a formerly really bright person have a lower IQ and is that part of the reason they do not understand or follow complex thoughts? I am wondering about this with my husband who now finds a lot of things "boring" LAG

Alzheimer's.

Tonight I found out that my dad most likely has Alzheimer's (he's 71). My stepmom is bringing me up to speed in regards to his condition - depression, mood changes, forgetfulness, neurological and psychological workup. I've seen it - and attributed (*wishfully*) to his past heart surgery (3 years ago) and depression.

Supports groups, Good information, Medical advances. I want to be an expert and fast, fast, fast. Yes, I'm doing my google work. Yes, I'm going to talk to the physician(s) involved.

But MeFi is too big - someone else must be going through this; have gone through it, knows what to do, what mistakes they made. This is what the green is about, right?
