Asking for a friend: Any leads on what this book might be? "Two girls become friends. Girl #1 realizes she's gay and gets a girlfriend, through which girl #2 realizes she's in love with girl #1. They lose touch until years later, when they are both grown. One plays the flute and rides horses, one is a famous sculptor. They fall in love and start living together. At some point, aliens are introduced and give folks on earth pills that allow them to achieve immortality for as long as they are taken."
I remember watching this and enjoying it more than expected, but unfortunately the details are so generic as to render searches nearly useless. [more inside]
I'm interested in good science fiction in any format (book, film, comics, etc.) that explores that idea that we are not alone in the universe, but wildly mismatched with everybody or nearly every else in terms of civilization stages, kinds of technology, perception, etc. [more inside]
It was an upright arcade game, but played like a board game. You and some (allegedly) hyper intelligent extraterrestrial take turns placing tokens (colonies, energy nodes, whatever) on a series of boards that change from round to round. Tokens next to the token you place get 'flipped' to your color. There was console art depicting spacey aliens with pseudopods. [more inside]

Can Nuclear Weapons Actually Kill Xenomorphs? Is it, in fact, the only way to be sure? It seems like they can handle a lot of physical battering, which makes me wonder if nuking the site from orbit in Aliens would ACTUALLY have killed them. If you are answering this question, please support any assertions by citing some part of the Alien canon; I have no use for whimsical uninformed opinions here; I'm a very busy person.
I'm wondering if you can recall a certain indie game about multiple generations of flying creatures peacefully growing flowers on an island. [more inside]
A girl (tween? early teen?) visits an alien planet (possibly blue and rocky?) and loses a ring. She has to explain what a ring is-- like a tiny bracelet for your fingers, which are the little arms that come out of the end of my arms-- to the sympathetic aliens, who have cup-shaped hands. I read this in Science Fiction & Fantasy Magazine some time in the early or mid-nineties. What's the title, author, or volume? Sure regretting tossing those back issues when I moved!
Do you remember reading a short science fiction story where aliens were regretting their decision to exterminate humanity? [more inside]

Many monsters in fiction are scary in large part because of their inherent, biological abilities: acid blood, teeth, claws, wings, etc. Inspired by this tumblr thread (via this Omni article), I'm looking for stories in any genre that avoid or (preferably) subvert this trope, making humans out to be inherently frightening, gross or dangerous.
I grew up listening to late-night spooky radio like Art Bell and George Noory. Recently on a road trip I burned a few CDs sort of at random to keep me company. Now I'm interested in digging through the archives to find the best episodes ever. Do any stand out to you? Please share!

Contact by Daft Punk supposedly "contains audio from the Apollo 17 mission used by courtesy of NASA and Capt. Eugene Cernan". The sample says: "Hey Bob, I'm looking at what Jack was talking about and it's definitely not a particle that's nearby. It is a bright object and it's obviously rotating because it's flashing, it's way out in the distance, certainly rotating in a very rhythmic fashion because the flashes come around almost on time. As we look back at the Earth it's up at about 11 o'clock, about maybe ten or twelve diame...Earth diameters. I don't know whether that does you any good, but there's something out there." When I Google this I find only Daft Punk references. Is it a genuine soundbite from the Apollo 17 mission or did those wacky French robots make it up?

Just finished watching the Alien series (again). I've always been curious, what did they live on for sustenance? Their awesome power and quickness suggests a significant need of caloric intake, but how this was handled was never clear. [more inside]
In any of the Alf media (the live action sitcom, the cartoon, or any supplementary materials), is it ever explained how cats have come to be on both Melmac and Earth? Here, it says that it is unknown if Melmac cats and Earth cats are even the same species (presumably they coud be doing a kind of Allosaurus/T-Rex convergent-evolution thing), but perhaps someone out there with greater Alf knowledge can shed more light on this.

Among narratives about visitations by the "Grey" aliens, are there any that talk about what cats do during the alien encounter? Do they just chill all cool-style? Do they FREAK OUT. Do they meow a lot or do they hiss or do they go hide someplace? Do they even try to bite the aliens (would be v. brave, imo). For the purposes of this question, let's allow both ostensibly fictional narratives and ostensibly real ones.
Help me find more great sci-fi about ancient aliens / ancient technologies for my favorite 14-year-old avid reader. [more inside]
If an alien located on a planet 100 light years from here was to switch on a big, multi-frequency radio receiver, and record all the noises coming from outer space for the next hundred years, on all frequencies, how many soap operas, advertisements and new broadcasts would they pick up from Earth? Would a mass-market radio, similar to our Earthly equivalents, pick up anything? Over time, as the number of Earth transmissions increases exponentially, would the alien pick up a cacophony or a damp fizzle? [more inside]
I remember a science fiction movie (or maybe a TV show?) that took place... in a space ship or very futuristic setting. There were aliens (I think, or man-created approximations of human beings?) that, when parts of their bodies were cut off, they would not only regenerate the limb but the spare limbs would regenerate BODIES. The atmosphere of the movie was very... orange? Dark? The details are all very fuzzy. I believe I saw it on cable TV, and I was definitely older than five but younger than twelve. So, 1989 to 1996. It scared the crap out of me when I was a kid and gave me nightmares for years. Help! [more inside]
Suppose an astronomer was sitting on a mirror of Earth less than 50 light years away and it was about 50 years in the future. On this mirror earth technology is similar to Earth's modern technology. What is the likelihood that their astronomers would have discovered Sol given its size and distance. How difficult would it be for a project the scale of the SETI array to listen to a 10K watt analog Earth radio station? Other details welcome. [more inside]

Need help IDing a sci-fi novel about the building of an interstellar transport network, a mean ship AI, and first contact with an unknowable alien intelligence
Can you help me identify this SF novel? Female protagonist is employed overseeing the construction of a transportation network into deep space. She has to deal with the ship's AI who is trying to turn her son (also a crew member) against her. They run into a very strange intelligent creature and try to figure out how to keep from destroying it with their gateway network, while also carefully monitoring the amount of time that she spends outside of suspended animation. A few years ago, I heard a segment on NPR/Seattle Public Radio about two men who claimed to have been abducted by aliens some number of years ago. I'm not sure if it was a This American Life story (but I don't think it was based on what I found of the show archives), a NPR story, or a Seattle Public Radio story. I am trying to find a recording of that piece now and/or more information about the story it covered. [more inside]

About a month ago I heard a partial interview with a short story author (male) and one of the stories was about aliens who come to Earth to experience emotions by inhabiting our bodies. They vacation here because our life span is very short compared to theirs. They were very, very tall on their planet. This story has been stuck in my mind. I emailed NPR and they couldn't figure it out either. Help!
