Heard a story years and years ago that after the US bought Alaska, local Russians could not carry all their worldly goods back west. In a dog-in-the-manger move, they buried their samovars and then left. (Potential treasure if you're into samovars.) Sounds like myth or legend, esp. given the small numbers of Russians left by 1860, but I've not been able to find any reference or story like that. This sound familiar to anyone? [more inside]

I am rereading John McFees "Coming Into The Country" and I find myself wondering the same thing that I did the last time I read it. That is, "What are all those people in Eagle, Alaska doing now?" I found a nice aerial view on Google maps, and a site for their historical museum, however, what I would like to find is another book. Any suggestions?

Now what? I tried asking MetaFilter without success, so how about suggestions on outdoor / adventure / natural history / other sites where I can ask this question: What book contains this description (and where in the book if possible)? Alaskan / Yukon rivers that freeze on the surface in the winter, then run dry beneath the ice, leaving river tunnels which bears and other animals then inhabit.

My wife and I want to go on an Alaskan cruise in the latter part of August. We have a couple questions: Is that a good time to go? Next, could we do a week long cruise for under $4000 (airfare to the Northwest included) on a non-sardinish cruise liner? Any thoughts or recommendations would also be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm from Arizona, and am going to Anchorage this summer to work. What's the cheapest way to get there? An Orbitz search says the cheapest flight is $497; are there other, cheaper alternatives? I'm open to driving up to 5 hours (i.e. Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Phoenix, etc.) if it will get me a cheaper flight, and also open to alternative methods of transportation (renting a car, train, etc.), as long as they get me there relatively quickly.

In T Coraghessan Boyle's excellent novel Drop City, there's a scene in which a character dies after drinking alcohol outside in the midst of a deeply freezing night in Alaska. Boyle doesn't really explain it, but I'm wondering if this is a commonly known actual way of dying; if so, is there some temperature at which drinking booze in sub-arctic conditions becomes hazardous to one's health?

My Dad, who worked as a social worker for natives in southern Alaska for the year of 1963, says at the time there was a program wherein you could get for free 150 acres of your choice of undeveloped land, if you helped establish civilization there by building a cabin etc., then IIRC after a couple of years paid a relatively small fee. Someone he'd met had a free island 3 days by boat from civilization. And, of course, large parts of the state were up for dollars or even cents an acre anyway. But now even more remote smallish Alaskan islands are sold in the millions, and I hear nothing about obscenely low land prices anymore. What has happened? Has that program disappeared, and why? Have private interests bought up all of thousands of acres of tundra (certainly not using it all!)? It's an interesting economic phenomenon, a ten-thousandfold (or infinityfold) property value growth.
