I have two questions about flying out of JFK Airport tomorrow. I'm going to take the E subway from Mahattan, then AirTrain to the airport. (1) Earlier this year, at the AirTrain, I paid $1 for a new card and then $5 for an AirTrain ride. This seemed excessive since I already had two MetroCards (my unlimited monthly card and another one), but I couldn't figure out a way around this on the spot. (2) President Obama and his family are on a personal weekend trip in NYC and are apparently going to fly from JFK to DC tomorrow night. Should I expect this to lead to significant delays (in my American Airlines flight to O'Hare) which should affect my planning?
I am taking a family vacation to Cape Cod. I have to pick up my 90 year old grandmother at North Station after arriving at Boston Logan with a family of four. [more inside]
My 2.5 year old toddler is going to be flying for the first time since she was a baby next week. We've been talking to her about it a bit, but I'd love to show her a video that would prepare her for the experience (security, boarding, taking off, landing, etc). I've found a few videos that show the process, but nothing really geared for toddlers.
I have a pair of American Eagle (women's) jeans that I tend to wear while traveling because they're comfortable. I think they're setting off the TSA scanners and metal detectors -- I've been pulled aside and patted down every time I wear them, and not much when I don't. My pockets are clear, and there's no egregious metal on the jeans besides the zipper and buttons. Any idea what might be happening?

In the terminals of a few airports I've been to (CLT, BOS, maybe YYZ?), I have seen screens playing video advertisements on the walls of the terminals that don't look like the typical LCD or plasma TV. They seem to consist of four rectangles arranged 2x2, essentially forming one "screen", with a small gap between each panel. There is no "frame" around each panel like a normal TV - I just appears to be four screens by themselves. Also, the panels appeared unusually bright. The image did not appear to be projected from elsewhere. What are these devices called?

At ARN, will I definitely be able to buy a micro SIM (ideally Comviq, based on these options, but if not, any similar brand)? Surprisingly hard to google a clear answer here. [more inside]
The imperial family and I will be traveling to Mumbai in a couple of weeks. We'll be arriving at a profoundly unfriendly hour of the night with three children 12 & under. We need to get from the airport down to the Fort District without getting taken for a ride, as it were. What do you recommend: Taxi rank at the airport? Reliable car service? Recommendations sought.
Due to a series of unfortunate events, I'll be in the Salt Lake City airport from 4pm-1am today. Is it worth going into SLC from the airport? Anything exciting going on tonight? Anything worth checking out in the airport?
I'm trying to use a couple of AirPort Expresses to extend my home wifi network but am having great difficulties. Please help? [more inside]
I ran a few luggage bags into the airport terminal for my aging grandmother and ran back out to the curb. Must have been 2 minutes. Airport security waved me away from my car and told me my car was being towed. I just stepped in my car and drove away while security insisted my car was being towed. What does the law say? Will I get a ticket if they've pulled my plates? Am I legally obligated to wait for a tow truck? Am I a fugitive of airport security?
My Airport Extreme (A1143 model) is having issues in our new house. It was built in the 50's so the floor has lots of metal in it due to the plastering of the ceiling below. We get wifi in part of the finished basement but no the whole thing, and even the "good" part drop pretty frequently. [more inside]
McCleish Christmas Benham was arrested at the DFW Airport by Airport police after attacking a gay man in the airport. News reports are saying he is not being charged with a hate crime. Can someone tell me definitively who would make the decision about what he is charged with?

MobilePrintingFilter - I needed a diminutive printer, and only the HP Officejet 100 fit the bill. I've got it working fine from my Macbook via direct USB, via Bluetooth, and, having USB-connected it to the same Airport Extreme base station that delivers my internet connection, via Bonjour. Now all I'm missing is... printig to it from my iPad. [more inside]

On Thanksgiving Wednesday, we'll arrive at the Philadelphia airport, probably at terminal F (US Airways) at 8:15 in the morning. We leave 80 minutes later, probably from terminal B (US Airways, again). No checked luggage, pre-cleared for customs, just pick up bags and run. Given Thanksgiving craziness and picking up the shuttle to C-16 so we stay inside security, is this still doable? When does it become Thanksgiving hectic? [more inside]
If you're flying in to Reagan National Airport in DC with a baby and your own car seat, how do you get a cab to your hotel? Will the regular cabs at the cab stand be able to accommodate you, or should you reserve a car service or cab ahead of time? If the latter, can you recommend a company? [more inside]
A few days ago I got high-speed internet from Comcast. When I placed the order, I was told I needed to upgrade my router and wireless to new models, specifically a TP-Link Wireless N300 and the Motorola SB6121 Surfboard modem. My internet speed is lower than ever. [more inside]

Can I take a Cintiq digitiser tablet through airport screening without getting it confiscated? The Cintiq requires mains power to work. (It doesn't have a battery, & was never designed to work with one). I think it's understandable that I wouldn't want to check this in as hold baggage. It's easy to mistake the thing for a tablet that "suspiciously does nothing" when not plugged in to the wall. UK-US trip. [more inside]

We have one day in Dublin on Friday (flight gets in at 8:30 am, have to be back at the airport by 5pm). Can we reasonably find interesting things to do in that time? Parks to walk through, a good place for a pub lunch (and World Cup watching?) or just interesting things to see in the vicinity such that we could get back to the airport in time would be great.

I'm traveling to E. Greenwich, RI for a wedding in September and it's about $60 cheaper per person to fly into Boston than to Providence (arrive Thursday 3 pm - depart 7 pm Monday) I don't really want to deal with the traffic driving from Boston to Providence so I'm looking into rail options but I can't make heads or tails of the MBTA schedule. 1) Can I pick up the Providence line at the airport or would I have to get a cab or bus to the train? 2) Can I take my luggage (probably two bags)? 3) Can I rent a car on arrival in Providence? 4) What will it cost?
I have found an airfare deal that I am happy with that involves going through Zurich. Potentially short layover in Zurich. From what I can gather, the airport at Zurich is a breeze for short flight connections but the sources of that information are a little outdated. Will this be enough time? [more inside]
For upcoming international travel I booked a flight out of Newark for the lower cost. I anticipated having a ride but am now forced to deal with transportation to/from the airport. I'll be gone for just over two weeks and will leave and arrive back during normal business hours on weekdays. I live in Montgomery County PA and am looking for transportation options to Newark Airport. Some options include: - Suburban rail to center city Philadelphia, Amtrak to Newark - Suburban rail to trenton, train to Newark/bus to airport - driving - hiring a car service - shuttle So far it seems like all the public transit options are pretty cheap but a pain from where I live and given that I'll have luggage. Hiring a car service would be easiest but most expensive. I liked the option of the SuperTrans shuttle which could either pick me up at home or at a nearby hotel, but have read terrible yelp reviews on them. Anyone have experience getting to/from Newark that could be helpful here?
In the near future, I will be flying alone several times with a 3.5 year old and a 7 month old. Lucky me. On at least some occasions, I will have someone bringing us to the airport or meeting us on the other end. I hear it's theoretically possible for that person to obtain a gate pass, and help us get to the plane (or meet us when we get off). We'll be fine ON the plane, but having help in the airport would be a real sanity saver. I know that gate passes are not handed out like candy and generally require cause. Does this constitute cause? What are your experiences with requesting / obtaining / being refused gate passes? Does it help to call ahead? Who would you call? Bonus points if you can speak specifically to Chicago O'Hare, Atlanta Hartsfield, or Panama City, FL.
Two US citizens flying from Rome (FCO) to London (Heathrow LHR) in a couple weeks. The flight is at 6:35am. Our ride to the airport can only drop us off at 10pm the night before. Will we be ALLOWED to wait in the airport during that time? [more inside]

Lately when I turn on my Mac, it detects an Airport Extreme base station. I don't know where the station is; I don't have one and I don't know the password to the one being detected. The Airport Extreme is chosen instead of my home network for internet access, and even when I manually cancel it and choose my own network, I sometimes lose connectivity as the computer returns to the Airport Extreme as a default connection. Lately, this is also happening with a PC and a Kindle, making it hard on all devices to choose my home network and keep it as a default.
A couple of years ago I was flying across Canada and got randomly selected for an extended search of my bags and everything swabbed. They swabbed my cellphone, camera equipment, and bags. After a few minutes they told me the swab came up positive. I'm not sure what for. [more inside]

I have a wifi network on an Airport Extreme 802.11n, extended by several Airport Express (2008 model, MB321LL/A) base stations. My new Samsung LED TV, in a room about 20 feet from the Airport Extreme, takes down my entire network—I can't reach the internet anywhere in the house—until I shut down the TV and reboot the Extreme. Suggestions for diagnosing and repairing the problem, please? [more inside]
I have an Airport Express base station - the older one not new (around 2009) version. Recently got a new iMac with with latest version of OSx and no longer see the the option under the sound button (top right corner of screen) to choose to either play with local speakers or speakers (or both) associated Airport Express base. When I go to settings - sound - output, I can see the the local speakers and the Airport Express but it says the selected device (Express) has no output controls. It used to be an option with any playback on any application. How to remedy? I can use my iphone (using iOS 6 not 7) to play on the airport express speakers. The only thing that seems to pickup the base is Itunes but other programs are not picking it up and I use Pandora, Spotify, Rhapsody, etc.. If I manually go in under the settings - sound - output I can click on Airport Express and it will play but not both sets of speakers. We like whole house music.
My wife and I use Macs, iOS devices, and Apple networking gear. We're thinking about sharing the desk where my Mac Pro is; as a result, if she needs the desk, and I need a computer, I'd have to use her MacBook Pro. What's the best way to network our computers so that we could do our work from whatever computer we're using, have music and/or programs available, etc.? Some details inside. [more inside]

At the airport a while back, I stumbled onto this book written I think by the people at MSN Finance. The book was called something like "Do this or that?" and the arrangement was as follows. A question was posed such as "Should I rent or stay with my parents to save on rent?" and two colorful pages were devoted to explaining which option was better. Another such question was "Should I rent or buy" as well as "Should I pay monthly for a gym membership or pay everything at all once." Its structure was similar to what one saw in those "Eat This Not That Books" that are so popular among dieters. The book I am talking about is fairly new and probably pretty popular as it was one of the titles at this airport I visited a month ago. The book was in hardback and had lots of colorful pictures. Thanks
I'm travelling to San Francisco today for a conference. It'll be my first time there, and I'd like to take public transit from the airport to my hotel - the Fairmont, on Mason St. It looks like I can take a train (BART?) from the airport to Powell St., Montgomery St., or Embarcadero, and walk from there. Is it reasonable to ride the train at 7 PM with a largeish rolling carryon bag and a backpack? Which station should I walk from, if I don't mind a bit of a walk but want to avoid overly-sketchy areas?

I need to drive from Prospect Heights to JFK around 5 AM on a weekday. I'm not a very confident highway driver anyway, and Google Maps suggests that the most logical route is to take Atlantic Ave all the way east to South Conduit, then straight down to the airport. I've done a variation on this route before and it makes sense and I feel comfortable with it. Except... [more inside]
I'm trying to avoid the insanely expensive "emergency" (bereavement) ticket prices for airfare. Is it feasible to just show up to a major airport like Chicago O'Hare without a ticket, and see what kind of cheap stand-by ticket I get? I'm assuming that airlines with an empty seat would want it filled at the last minute... I wouldn't mind waiting for hours at the airport for such a seat. Intended destination is Los Angeles or nearby.
We are flying from Toronto to LAX (on Air Canada) and then LAX to Tokyo (on United), with a layover in LAX of 95 minutes. Based on my research, I assume we will be passing from Terminal 2 to 7. We're both Canadian citizens, if that matters. I haven't seen anything definitive on this particular transfer, but based on other AskMefi LAX answers it seems a little unlikely this will work... Is that enough time?

Yay! Our 15 year old nephew Sam is coming to visit us in Italy for three weeks during the school holidays. From Australia. Via Dubai, it's a 22 hour flight. Although he has to disembark and changes flights in Dubai, there is a relatively short hour and a half layover. He has only travelled internationally once before to Vietnam, and then not on his own. He is a great guy, however I want to ensure that he finds the whole experience as easy as possible. Any hints? Dubai is a wonderfully eclectic airport which will be an eye opener. As someone reasonably blasè about international travel and airport transfers, I am hoping to mine the hind mind for special hints that might help Sam in negotiating the flights, transfer and the clearing of customs and arrival in Rome? Thanks!
