My fiancee is planning to move to Chicago at some point later this year--if all goes well with our engagement, of course ;). She has a GDL (law conversion) degree (in addition to non-law undergrad and postgrad degrees) from the UK and is looking for advice, first and foremost, on the "lay of the land" and things to keep in mind in transferring environments. I'm the kind of person who gets worried enough they'll do their work not well, or make a mistake, that they end up either not starting or working too slowly and filled with dread. Last week, I had to work late on a project. I had two beers in the process, found I cared less about the anxiety and dread and perfectionism, and just did a better, less stressful job. I want to do this without drinking. [more inside]
At the parent-teacher conference Dec 5th the teacher told me my autistic/ADHD/OCD/GAD child is so aggressive the staff fears their safety and want to use restrainsts, and they want to bring it up in the next iep. This is the first I've heard of any aggression. [more inside]

I'm trying to gin up a social media campaign on a very short timeframe (3 - 4 weeks). I am basically internet literate (witness my longstanding MeFi membership) but I have never done anything like this before. I do have a social media person at work to help, but given the nature of my organization, I'm going to be in the driver's seat. But I feel like since I know the issue, the constituencies, and how to use Facebook, that I'll be able to figure it out and just need to jump in and do it (although I realize it may be a failure anyway). So here are my questions: 1) Is this going to be more complex than I think? Am I suffering from the Dunning-Kruger effect? Do I need to vet my strategy with social media "experts" to be successful? 2) Any quick tips for me?
So this was me commenting a bit ago about how some views toward health care actually damage the lives of real people. And now I need advice, because the situation has grown so far out of my control and I think I’ll go out of my mind with worry. [more inside]

Hi , I was wondering if any mefiers could help advise me on potentially choosing a certain module for my llb (undergraduate law) option. I was thinking of choosing the legal writing and advocacy option, but I am not sure. Has anyone any idea of what is usually expected in a module such as this? It strikes me as an option very similar that provided in American law schools. How are these usually assessed? The naive bone in me is entertaining the prospect of a slightly less harsh marking criteria compared to the substantive core modules I shall be studying as well; but I could be wrong. My course book mentions the break down of the module as follows: Legal Writing and Advocacy: - Reflective Learning Journal (40%) - Response to Consultation Document (30%) - Oral Presentation 1 - (15%) - Oral Presentation 2 - (15%) [more inside]

The regents of my university want to redevelop the land holding the student apartments where I live. There's a public meeting on the subject this Friday and I've signed up to speak. I'm fine with speaking in public, but I'm clueless about participating in local politics — never gone to a school board meeting or called my congressperson or anything. What can I do to make my comments as effective as possible?
