After 4 years, and recent realization of my boyfriends distasteful behavior towards me, I am deeply considering leaving my first adult relationship. I've realize that quite possibly I've never been happy. I've been plagued my anxieties and insecurities throughout most of it. It has also had it's fair share of issues. It probably isn't a good sign if leaving our relationship makes me feel more sane. I think I need advice. Inside will be most of our history of issues and some more specific questions. [more inside]
I broke up with my girlfriend of three years yesterday night. I told her I missed a part to fully love her and commit in the same way that she is committed to me. I feel shitty now. What should I do now? [more inside]
My 62-year-old mom with "pseudodementia" was taken to the hospital last night after a psychotic episode, and now she's in the neuro wing of the hospital under involuntary commitment...what should I expect to happen, and what could be wrong with her? [more inside]
Why do some novices disregard advice and/or best practices? What can be done to persuade them to heed general guidelines? I'm an aquarist, and repeatedly I see a significant number of people doing things that will result in the harm or death of their fish, and it's due to well known problems. Yet many novices attempt those things anyway, with predicable results. I'm trying to understand to explore what advice could be given that would change the outcome. [more inside]
There is a possibility I may be getting a job that would require a relocation to Atlanta. Can you help recommend a community or neighborhood? Details inside. [more inside]
I'm curious to know your stories, or what it is that keeps you happy in the relationship you are in? Also is it possible to grow in love with a person when you are in a happy relationship? Before I confused love with infatuation and I don't want to go through that again! [more inside]
I just found out I need to wear eyeglasses full-time and I need help selecting frames, purchasing advice, and moral support. There are difficulty modifiers. Very special snowflake details inside. [more inside]
Mr. Otter_Handler and I went to France in April and among many other delights managed to procure a small wheel of Livarot cheese, which was vacuum sealed by the fromageur when we bought it and refrigerated until our departure, then refrigerated once we got home. Mr. Otter_Handler opened it in late April, when in an effort to contain the aroma (yes, it does smell a bit like rotting cabbage) it was moved to a small dorm fridge in Mr Otter_Handler's study. It's June now and I can smell this cheese without opening the fridge. Is this cheese still good or can we say "au revoir" to this souvenir of Normandy?
Due to cuts, I've lost income and am now running in the red each month. I can handle this for just a little bit before it gets dicey. I need a new full time job but I've never been very good at job hunting or getting interviews and I've also battled a lot of depression and anxiety. (Complication - I am in what might be an emotionally abusive relationship and have to get on my feet.) [more inside]

Worked full time in assorted office jobs since 2004 while going to community college. In 2012, I started a (part-time) degree at University of Pennsylvania and in Fall 2015 (maybe Spring 2016) I will graduate with a psychology bachelor's degree. I have about 20K in debt and make less than 40k per year in a job that is not really a career. How can I transition to a career where I make at least 50k per year, preferably more? Many more details inside. [more inside]

My wife and I are both working on dieting, focusing on portion control, eating more veggies, and cutting our carbs. It's going OK so far, but my wife has found that she's getting really frequent "sweet" cravings. So, I figured I might as well try asking the internet: What are some good ways to help answer that craving without busting our dieting plans?
A professional setback from several years ago is affecting my ability to move forward. I’ve been floundering around and drifting for years. I want to get my shit together, but I don’t know how to proceed. How do I figure out wtf I should do with my life now? [long] [more inside]
The backstory might shed light, but it's long and I'm sorry if it bores you. I might make a TL;DR sentence, but I suggest you read the whole thing. TL;DR. Befriended girl and crushed, had a lot of issues that turned me off, turned into a very close friend, badly timed telling her about dead feelings, and managed to still communicate until I had to back off for a bit. Don't know what I should do? [more inside]
This guy I met a few months ago has been sending me some very mixed signals for a very long time and I honestly don't know what to make of it. Whenever I'm just about to write him off for ghosting on me, he re-appears and it's like nothing ever happened. Anyone have any advice or tips? [more inside]
My friend is graduating in 6 weeks from college. She is usually really animated and bubbly, but I was hanging out with her yesterday, and she mentioned in passing that she's thinking about going back to college for another major (she is currently getting her second major after her first didn't work out for her), but she's iffy on whether her dad will let her or not. Well I took your advice from last time and relaxed my principles - I started blow drying and flat ironing and applying various goos at various times. And that's okay but only as long as my hair has been recently cut. So what I need now is advice about how to communicate with my hair stylist that I really do want it flat, flat, flat, flat. Last time she seemed to think she was talking me out of making a huge mistake. [more inside]

I'm moving from Brooklyn, NY to Portland, OR and will be owning a car, at least for the first couple of months. All the advice for this situation is about *what* car to buy, but I'm being given a used car, so I'm more curious about the top things to keep in mind about owning a car, how your life changes, all that sort of stuff. What am I forgetting, what am I missing, what do you wish you knew about owning a car before you owned one, have you been in a similar situation?

I met someone at work a little while ago. I thought he was gorgeous and worked up the courage to say hi. Not only do we have a lot in common, he turns out to be one of the sweetest, most respectful people I've ever dated: very understanding, reliable, actually responsive to calls and texts, accepting, wanted to take things slowly, the works. And then I call him after not hearing from him all weekend, and I get his voicemail. He still hasn't called me back, and I'm wondering if I've done something wrong. [more inside]

I've been hit with a significant number of life stressors recently, and could use some help. I've been working on keeping my stress levels low through healthy eating, exercising, and sleeping well, but my stress is getting to the point where I feel like laying in bed all day. I can't afford to let myself spiral any lower; I'd like some simple-yet-effective stress busters to prop me up, so that I have enough energy to deal with my problems and continue living healthy. My fiancee and I have spent much of our adult lives travelling and have a fondness for our time spent in the United States. As such we would love to be married there. We are planning to hold a humanist ceremony / blessing / non–legal ceremony in the UK and rather than the usual Registry Office ceremony to take care of the legal things, we were hoping to Honeymoon in the Pacific Northwest and get legally married while there. I am trying to work out a few things … [more inside]
Been in a relationship with my partner for 2 years. I'm 26 and he is 28. We don't live together yet but have talked about it a couple of times throughout our relationship along with talking about having children. I make more money than him but he refuses to let me pay for dates, so we don't do as much as I would like to. He is responsible with money but barely has any disposable income. His expenses seem to be much higher than mine. Are financial issues a deal breaker in a relationship? [more inside]
My partner always says he doesn't have any particular goals in life, but it's clear that he does. He just hasn't identified or articulated them. Do you know a book, essay, website, etc. that could help him elucidate his image of what he wants for the future? [more inside]
We own a mid-sized business together. Communication between us has effectively stopped, mainly because of differing business styles. We still talk, but he stopped listening about 10 years ago. It’s gotten to the point where we act independently of each other in both our professional and personal lives. His actions have eroded my respect and trust for him, business-wise. I think the only way to save our 20 year marriage is to split financially, but I don’t know if that is possible. [more inside]

I find the legal and operational nooks and crannies of running a startup detailed in Neal Stephenson's novel Cryptonomicon fascinating. (Example: "People like Avi and Beryl, who have been in business a lot, have this noticeable preference for two-person conversations [to protect other corporate officers].") Do you have any recommendations for novels or non-fiction with similar storylines, passages and advice?

My uncle (by marriage) has terminal cancer. His doctors have just recommended hospice care. We're medium-close; I see him and his family every couple of years. I live about 300 miles away. What can I do for him? For his wife (my mom's sister) and his grown kids? What can I say? Thank you.
I'm a 22 year old college student who has a crush on a classmate. I've had very little interaction with him. Last week, I got to hang out with him at a friend's birthday party, he was very nice and funny and we even exchanged phone number. I also heard from his friends that he's single. Since the party, We haven't talked to each other much because there are very few opportunities to talk when we are in school. He sits far away and we don't have mutual activities outside of class. We have only said hi to each other in the hallway. I'm a shy person and very inexperienced when it comes to flirting or pursuing a romantic relationship. I don't know how to get to know him better without appearing desperate. I have no idea if he is interested in me more than a friend. I have never had a boyfriend so I don't know what to do. Thank you for you're advice!
