Why are Trump and Clinton showing up in my Twitter feed all of a sudden and is there any way to get rid of them? [more inside]
I've been an AD/ACD/freelance in Chicago for 15 years and I cannot stand agency world anymore. Plus, I'm 40 something, and seems like new hires are usually very young, and the lack of people over the age of 35 at agencies these days is appalling. Need help figuring a way into client/corporate side. [more inside]
About 2-3 weeks ago, I saw one or two sentences that read something like this: "[RECENT THING was marketed at [COOL/YOUNG DEMOGRAPHIC] but turned out wildly popular with middle-aged white women instead." [more inside]
For many many years, I've heard about an early-90's commercial for British Knights sneakers featuring music written by Superchunk. It appears lost to the mists of time. UNLESS you know where I can find it or see it, or heck, even just listen to it. Anyone?
Hi all, I am struggling on how to word a letter (or a flyer) advertising my buddy's company that provides handyman services to property management companies. I've been putting it off for weeks and the google is failing me. Is anyone good at this, or can you recommend a source for how to write or format such a letter? Many thanks! [more inside]
I recently opened an Etsy shop for my art. On the advice of a handful of folks, I started using Facebook ads to promote it. Now I have a big bill, and the ads did not yield a single sale. Am I doing it wrong or are FB ads just really ineffective for this? More inside. [more inside]
I am seriously considering pursuing a career in corporate copywriting and want to know the ins and outs. I have plenty of writing credits from various sources, both in print and online, but want to know from industry professionals about how to go about getting my foot in the door and being able to solidly present myself to agencies. I'm a small business owner who's recently decided to raise the company's minimum wage to $15 across the board. Sue me, but I'd like to find out if I can translate this into some free press coverage. [more inside]
I'm looking to buy a monitor for our business that I can use to display adverts/information on. Either fed from a server or loaded onto a SD card. Does anyone know the difference between a cheap used 22" TFT from eBay which I can use with an old Mac Mini and a proper "advertising screen" with a built in computer which can costs hundreds of pounds? Thanks a lot for your insights.
I need help with some very short phrases for some promotional buttons I need to make. Help me? [more inside]
I've come to realize the people I work for are fake and opportunistic to the point I've been looking quietly for a job. Then they offered me a substantial promotion. Do I take it and tolerate them until I can go elsewhere? Or do I quit now and move laterally on to something else? [more inside]
Current Group Creative Director/Copywriter considering leaving the full-time agency world and going freelance. Is this a shot at freedom or a fool's errand? [more inside]
After asking this question, I am now wrangling helpful strangers into lip-syncing to a song, and I need somewhere to host our video that won't slap an ad on top of it, or worse, block it for copyright violations. Details inside. [more inside]
Is it Fox's interior people? An outside ad agency? Several agencies? The posters and tv/internet spots have been consistently hilarious with a particular tone, so I'm really curious, but can't find any answers via Googling.
My company has set up an online store selling high-quality toys and a other imported items from abroad. Now we're looking for advice and other people's experience on how to get customers. [more inside]
I volunteered to make posters advertising a high school graduation party, planned for May 2016, and I'm already out of ideas. While it will be a "safe & sober party" I don't want to harp on that particular slogan when advertising to the students. [more inside]

Why are the ads on my Kindle so completely off-base? I'm a BIG Amazon user. I buy tons of products of all sorts, many books, and many, many ebooks. So why does Amazon do such a terrible job of targeting ads to me via my Kindle? [more inside]
Following a spate of features added to Firefox in recent months which are arguably for the benefit of content-providers, rather than users, are there other otherwise friendly, open-source tools to which similar features have been added? Are there watchdog groups/resources which monitor this? [more inside]
I'm an interior painter and want to get an idea of when others have received the most responses from their ads. Are there certain days and/or times that have worked best for you? Thanks!
According to this: But how will Bing Rewards be impacted?
Did the amount of ads shown during Hulu Plus shows suddenly double or triple? I could swear we were only getting 30-45 seconds of ads at a time during shows. Now, it seems like we get 90 seconds worth and at more regular intervals. Did I imagine this? If it is happening, is it happening everywhere? Or could they have been tamping down my ads while I was a new subscriber and then ramping them up later?
I’ve been a copywriter for 10 years and I’ve done well. I climbed the ranks… and promptly burnt out a little more than a year ago. I’m down in the dumps, perhaps depressed, and need to start making decisions. Weigh some pros and cons with me? This is going to get very long. [more inside]
I'm an advertising copywriter and new mom, currently out on maternity leave and coming to the conclusion that going back to work full time will break my heart. Before my leave started, some higher ups at my agency mentioned that they would be open to me working part time (if the alternative was me quitting). Great! But...how would this work, exactly? Looking for suggestions to make part-time make sense in a creative department. If you work in advertising I would especially value your input. [more inside]
I've been an advertising creative for almost ten years and have observed that there are very few people beyond their 40s still doing what I do. And, well, I'm in my late 30s. I've started wondering, where do all the ad creatives go? [more inside]
I'm having some trouble finding historical data on (overall) ad spending by medium. What I would really like, is a single graph or at least table, with some numbers going back ~30 years (or more is fine) that goes up to the present (~2014 let's say). I am uninterested in forecasts, and I'm uninterested in data sets with shorter time windows; my search results are just getting swamped by organizations that (i) are selling something, usually forecasting, and (ii) aren't focused on anything older than a few years ago. [more inside]
I work as a copywriter at a small advertising/branding/web development firm. There are about 12 people on our team. I’m considering what it would be like to transition to a much larger agency (e.g., 100 to 1,000 people). Do you have experience working in both types of environments? In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of each? (I’m especially interested in answers from creatives' perspectives, but would also be interested in hearing from account managers and other folks.) Thanks!

I programmed an online calculator tool that generates inventory purchasing recommendations for retail store owners. I would like to get feedback on the tool from people who buy inventory for their retail stores for a living. How do I do that? Short of just walking into stores and bothering the owners to take a look at my program or paying for adwords or some such, I'm not sure how to get the word out about my new tool to people who would be interested in using it. Any feedback would be welcome.
In the terminals of a few airports I've been to (CLT, BOS, maybe YYZ?), I have seen screens playing video advertisements on the walls of the terminals that don't look like the typical LCD or plasma TV. They seem to consist of four rectangles arranged 2x2, essentially forming one "screen", with a small gap between each panel. There is no "frame" around each panel like a normal TV - I just appears to be four screens by themselves. Also, the panels appeared unusually bright. The image did not appear to be projected from elsewhere. What are these devices called?
While trying to check a quotation about retirement by one Hartman Jule, I found that while the name appears on lots of quote-collecting websites, I was unable to find any biographical information on anyone by that name. All references inside books only lead to epigraphs (i.e., more quotes), most having to do with retirement or advertising. Is this a known pseudonym of an individual? In lieu of any information on Hartman Jule having been a real person, I'd like to find the primary source(s) for the quotes attributed to him. [more inside]
Sometimes, on restaurant menus or in other media that I'm not recalling at the moment, the text styling will reflect the meaning of the word. Examples off the top of my head: sizzling, hot, chilly. Here's an example in an advertisement. What would you call this phenomenon? The most apt description I can come up with is visual onomatopoeia, but is there a better word for this?
I've recently become aware that as much I might be aware of advertising's intent, mentally screening out all the low-level emotional messages is impossible. How do you prevent advertising from reaching you? [more inside]

I, and likely most of you reading, consider myself jaded towards advertising. But I've been wondering, have marketers effectively come up with ways to influence people like me who routinely ignore ads? [more inside]
Hi there I am trying to find an advert from around 2009 that, as I remember it was... 1) For a mobile phone network (although not a major one); 2) Depicted a purple cartoon-like character holding a spray can or a marker; and 3) Had a "graffiti" style typeface or logo. This advert ran on the London Underground, however, due to LU's advertising policy, it was the logo and character were edited so they bore no reference to graffiti. Please help!
I may have made a custom bumper sticker saying "has lying salesmen and bad ratings online" and stuck it on my car's bumper underneath the dealer's name/logo on the car. Someone looking at my car's back bumper might see the message that "(Car Company) of (City)" "has lying salesmen" etc. Is this legal to have on my car? [more inside]
There's an ad for the Chevy Volt in which a male-female couple is driving. The man connects his iPhone to the car, and asks Siri to read his voicemails. He then listens to one and is embarrassed by it. I've looked around, contacted Chevy and even their ad agency, but can't find video of this ad. The ad aired during The Daily Show online around Spring 2014. Sources anyone?

Every week (sometimes twice) I get a bag of ads on my doorstep - some mattress place, Lowes, SmartSource. It's litter. It's wasteful. I'm sick of picking it up all the time. It's not mailed; someone is dropping on every doorstep. Is the local newspaper the culprit? How do I get rid of this stuff? [more inside]
I run a small media company with a staff of five (two people on sales, two editors, one social media person). The salespeople have a low salary, high commission salary structure, and advertising deals are generally in the low-mid 5 figure range. Our social media person is interested in getting into sales, or more specifically, getting compensated for introductions that eventually turn into sales. We're happy to accommodate her but have no idea how to structure things. [more inside]

Debating using Twitter ads at the company where I work- you only pay if the ads actually work, according to twitter - only if people follow you, they say. Our question - if it charges per follower, is it per follower who clicked through the ad and ended up clicking follow after being led there by the ad, or does it charge for every single - even organic or gained otherwise - follower you or your company or brand amass during the time the ad is running? This is a very big distinction as far as I am concerned.
