What are the repercussions for someone operating a wheelchair or motorized scooter who repeatedly runs into and/or injures others--accidentally or otherwise? Are the wheelchair-bound required to have insurance? Who pays for damages? Can restrictions be put on their speed or on the areas in which they're allowed to operate their wheelchairs? I'm seeking resources and/or detailed information for a research project and so far haven't had much luck.

Our SUV was probably totaled today. The police wrote the other party a ticket for running a red light, so blame shouldn't be an issue. Both airbags blew up front, which I think will likely total it without even factoring in the rest of the damage. However, I've never been involved with a totaled car situation, so I'm trying to get my act together to make sure I don't get screwed by the settlement. What do I need to know? [more inside]

My friend's just bought a nice new Moog Etherwave! Unfortunately, he plugged it in to the mains with just a plug converter, and since we're in Australia (240V) instead of the US, where the Moog came from (120V or something) - boom. Can we fix this? Would he have just have fried the power supply rather than the Moog itself? If so, can we just cut the cable, buy a new power supply (and transformer), and splice it on? Would that be a horrible nightmare?

My dog got hit by a car this morning. She is not allowed out unleashed (normally) but got out this morning and ran in front of a car. There are a lot of snowbanks around so I do not fault the driver. However, his car was damaged a bit, front skirt. Should I offer to repair the damages? The driver did stop and was very concerned for the dog.

I am interested in the physics of motor vehicle accidents. The most basic question I have is which of Newton's laws, if I am understanding them properly, is at work in the following situations: 1) You're driving in a straight line and suddenly you jerk the wheel in one direction. This makes the car start to roll. 2) You're driving and you fall asleep at the wheel, so the car drifts to one side. You wake up suddenly, jerk the wheel in the opposite direction, and the car starts to roll. 3) You round a sharp curve too fast and roll the car. If anybody would like to give detailed explanations of the physics of each of these situations, hopefully without calculus, that would be great, as well. thanks!

I caused a very small car accident last month (no damage to the other car). I was required to report in court. Rather than just paying a fine, because I'm under 21 they are requiring me to go through this program called Teens Learning Control. It consists of lots of 4 hour seminars, 1 test, and 8 hours of community service. I'm 19, a full time college student, and also working full-time as a web designer in a design firm. I have no time to do any of this and the whole situations is ridiculous. I'm not asking to completely get off scott free. Why can't I just pay a fine. What are my options? Any Advice? I have to report back to court on march 30th with the program completed.

I've been driving a car for about a decade now, and it's suddenly occurred to me that I'm now completely paranoid about anyone else driving me somewhere. I'm constantly checking the mirrors while they drive, and getting stressed because I think they should be braking sooner or driving in a different lane. It even happens when I catch a bus. Has anyone else experienced this? How did you get over it?

Car accident question:
If you go report a car accident a day or two after it happened at the police station and it was your fault, can you still get a ticket for following too closely, failure to yield, etc?
