I studied philosophy in college. By my senior year I had decided that I wanted to pursue a career in academia. I had co-founded a conference. I was writing a thesis. I had intentions of applying to graduate schools. However, during my last semester I experienced a crisis of faith and delayed my thesis for six months, eventually earning a "C". I want to go back and do the job right, but I don't know how.

Academics: What's your filing system for academic papers?
As I finish up my undergrad degree and enter grad school, I'm reading a lot of papers. Currently, they're just in a tall stack on my desk and in a folder in my Mac.
I'm interested in hearing filing solutions -- both hard copy and electronic -- for academic papers.

We're meant to do all of our University assignments with Harvard Referencing. Easy enough. However I've grown used to using Word's system of managing references and it does all the updating itself for any changes I make - has anyone got any ideas how to get Word 2007 (or 2003 / XP) to do the referencing? My Google-fu has failed me so far.

In a few academic papers I've seen, instead of the usual ACM/IEEE copyright blurb, it just says "Copyright held by the author". What's the significance of this? Can anyone just replace the ACM copyright with their own? Does it affect the paper's acceptance rate? Does the conference or journal approve of this?

I'm looking for a certain political theorist's description of the different stages of national revolutions. I think it's Max Weber, but I'm not sure. The basic theory says that there are three stages to any revolution, starting from an elite core, to a larger mainstream body, and then ending in a larger synthesis upon which the revolutionary group becomes indistinguishable from the mainstream. Does anyone know where this is from?

I’m currently looking for footage to use as b-roll for an academic project I am working on.
The project deals with consumer ethics across cultures, specifically in relation to sweatshop labour, environmentally unsound and counterfeit goods.
The cutaway footage I'm looking for needs to illustrate and break up these aesthetically challenged interviews.

I agreed to "edit" a (25-page) thesis paper for a friend at another college. When the paper arrived, it was so raw that the whole thing needed to be massively reorganized, not just tweaked for grammar and clarity. It then became clear (through subsequent discussions with her about it) that what she wanted me to do was basically reword much of the language as well (she considers me to be a stronger writer) to make it "sound better."

How do they create book indexes? I have a friend who's a grad student, and she needs to create an index for her hundred page scientific thesis. Is there any easy way to do it in MS Word, or another software product -- something that a non-geek could churn and burn with in a couple of hours?
