Urgent: I'm in Brazil and my debit card is being rejected at all ATMs (HSBC etc). I don't even get to the stage of entering my pin number, it tells me that my card is invalid automatically after inserting it. I've called my bank and been told that I should be able to lift the block online by registering that I'll be abroad, which i've done to no avail. Help!

I have 50 dollars in a checking account. I forgot my PIN. I am in Thailand. I have a paypal account. I have a second account that is empty, but I know the PIN. I am destitute. Money changers will not do less than $100. How do I get that $50 into usable form? I will have access to real money in about 3-4 days but am broke until then.

Being a 21st Century kind of guy I find myself now doing long-term work for a few companies overseas (India and the U.K.). I would like to be able to open a bank account in each country and just get the money I need via ATM. I'm thinking that since the dollar sucks it would probably be better financially for me long term. Is this a smart move? How hard is it for citizen of the US open a bank account in a foreign country? Do I have to report that income? And if so will I end up getting taxed twice?

Am I giving myself any protection against ATM hacking by not having an ATM card for some specific account, or is the account in the network whether or I have a card?

What is the relationship between delis and the owners of the ATM machines that are inside them? Are the machines "free" to the deli owner? Or do the ATM owners pay the delis? If they do pay, how is it done - a flat fee or a variable fee depending on use? (I'm asking purely out of curiosity).

My son has a few friends who will be visiting us this summer. They have debit cards for their UK bank accounts, specifically NatWest/Solo and HSBC cards. Will these work in the ATMs (hole-in-the-walls (or is it holes-in-the-walls?)) here in the US?

Tonight I was paying at a gas station and I used the keypad to enter my pin. The numbers 2, 3 and 4 showed tremendous wear compared to all other keys except the enter key. It's the kind of stupid odd trivia that appeals to me. I Googled "common pin numbers" and it seems "123" is pretty common among the unimaginative. But that doesn't explain 2, 3 and 4 being so well-worn, and not 1. Can you?

I just went to my corner credit union ATM and made a $15 withdrawal. The machine gave me $80. Reflexively, I went into the branch, and reported it. They were appreciative. Two people virtually raced over to the back of the machine to shut it down.

At the time, it was a no brainer. But I am wondering if, since the receipt I got indicated a $15 withdrawal, and the cameras usually focus and faces, what would the traceability of it have been? I wonder if Diebold might have been stuck with the mistake. . .Maybe my honesty could have been turned into a political act, if Diebold would have lost out on the money. . .
