Public Domain Use Victorian Era/Victorian-esque Art?

Hear me out before you say "Just google it" -- I do plenty of google-shopping for images and generally find low-res crappy images that are not necessarily what I'm looking for. I am looking for Victorian/19th century images. They must be high resolution and they are preferably in the public domain. I plan on using them for mixed media collages -- mostly just for myself and friends/gifts and not for profit, however, I've been offered space in an art booth and I may end up using images for commercial gain. More details behind the cut. [more inside]

The Art of making Money

A good friend of mine, a London-based ceramics artist, needs to find a way of making her career more financially lucrative. By many measures, she is already successful: she has attained high-profile residencies, is signed to a prestigious gallery, and is critically acclaimed. However, she’s barely making enough money to survive and is starting to question whether it is worth continuing to plough her time into a career that will leave her impoverished. [more inside]

Online acrylics lessons

I used to be a decent student painter, and I've recently had a yen to start up again, after almost a decade. I've got to restock my supplies and have an okay sense of what I need. But – I'm looking for some mid-level acrylic lessons in either photographic + blog or video format to dive back in. Very basic conceptual stuff not needed (I know color theory, perspective, and all that good stuff), but something that focuses specifically on painting with acrylics, technique, and getting started on new projects would be great. Any ideas?

Whose Lovecraft-in-suburbia art is this?

A while back I randomly downloaded this image, very possibly from a Metafilter thread, without noting the name of the artist. Anyway, I recently posted it to Facebook and one of my friends wants to know who the artist is as he's pretty sure he went to school with the guy ... but he forgets his name. Any ideas?

How do I get lots of free/cheap porn magazines for an art project?

I am working on a very large series of art pieces which incorporate images from porn magazines. (I prefer magazines' print quality to that of what I can find online.) However, I'm having trouble getting enough magazines and don't know how to amass a lot without spending lots of money. Freecycle and Craigslist both forbid porn, though I have gotten a couple stacks from CL. There is no bookstore locally that can help. I am open to any and all hardcore magazines (no Playboy or Penthouse). Any orientation, any fetish is fine, and they need not be recent. I can't afford to pay much for the magazines but could of course pay for shipping.

How can I learn to be a very good acrylic painter?

I've been a professional writer all my working life--non-fiction: newspapers, national magazines, books, tv--and now that I'm semi-retired I'm attempting to learn a new skill. Painting. It's thrilling to see the world in a new way and I love it. The instructor is delightful: accomplished and generous with praise. I've taken her beginners' course and learned a lot--by my subjective eye, I went from worst in the class to second best. Now I'm in the follow-up course. But I'm not very good yet and nearly all the 15 or so others in this class have painted for years or have taken lots of courses, and they're embarrassingly far ahead of me. I know that I must "compete" only with myself. I know that I can advance only at my own pace and that should be fine. But I want to learn faster! I want to be the best! I'm reading books, and practicing outside class, and messing around with different paints and colors and substrates, and that helps. Is there anything else I might do that would help me learn faster? Tips? Reading? Materials? Just practicepracticepractice? See, I don't even know enough yet to ask a clear and concrete question. Mefi artists, can you show me the way?

Looking for the artist of a 20-square series in charcoal/watercolor.

Everything is monochromatic, and looks like it was done in charcoal or watercolor. The copy I have is a 20-piece series of ~8"x8" drawings. The plot: a girl walks up to a statue near a body of water, removes her clothes, and begins to swim. She and the statue's water-reflection begin to... roil, quite passionately, in the water, and in the final panel she ends up in the statue's arms. Any knowledge of the artist or title would be well appreciated.

Who's the painter who wasn't able to finish a painting?

I heard this story once, probably apocryphal, of this painter who would never consider a work finished, and his dealer had to break into his studio to get the paintings out so the artist would stop working on them before they were ruined. Does anyone know know who this story is about?

Teach Me About Art Storage.

My favorite part of museums these days are the visible storage units. My favorite part of natural history museums are old-fashioned drawers filled with air-tight cases. I want to know more about the history and practice of storing/preserving art objects, paintings, sculpture, textiles, etc. What books/websites should I be reading to find out more? The more weirdly medium specific and detailed the better. Strange anecdotes very much welcome.

Art Supply Experts: Drawing Grid Needed

I have a project in which I will be having to make scale drawings of old pieces of textile that are flat. I am looking for a real drawing grid, which I envision as a square frame with vertical and horizontal lines (wire?) that I can place over the fabric to help me draw it on a piece of graph paper. This is meant to reduce the time and effort of plotting points on the graph paper corresponding to the features of the item being drawn. I can't just place graph paper over the textile and trace it because it's too delicate. And most drawings will not be 1:1 scale. There are lots of choices of software for grids on computers, but so far my web searches of art supply stores haven't turned up anything that's for use in the real world. The squares need to be metric.

Roadtrip from Hammond, Louisianna to Vancouver, BC

I will be in Hammond, Louisiana this October and wanted to make a road trip back to my home in Vancouver Canada. The current plan is to buy a vehicle in Hammond or New Orleans, then drive through Texas and up the coast. I am an artist, so visiting sites like Marfa to see the Chianti Foundation and visiting LA to see the MOCA and the Hammer are priorities. I am asking for advice on art sites and routes with the most interesting or essential things to see. I've visited a few places in the US but this is a big trip for me I may not be able to make again so I'd like to make the most of it. If you are American, assume I know nothing. The obvious for you may not be that obvious to a Canadian. Thanks!

Returning to writing and painting after a long depression

I am a writer (poetry, fiction, essays) and painter (mostly abstract art done in acrylics). I am normally quite prolific, but I have been dealing with a ferocious depression for months now and pretty much stopped creating altogether. However, I am feeling hopeful that the end of the yuckiness is in sight, and I'd like to get back to work. Yesterday I went to a cafe to write and sent out some submissions but really didn't know where to begin with writing. I made a list of potential projects, but none of them really grabbed me, and I didn't either feel any great ideas or the patience to sit with them until I got an idea. A similar thing happened when I was thinking about painting. So, does anybody have any tips for getting back into creative work after a long time away with something as crippling as depression can be?

How to Sell Fine Art?

My mother owned some art from the 60s-80s, and she passed a little over four years ago; since then, it has been in my spare closet. I would like to sell it, if possible, because I believe some of the work is valuable, but the closed art market makes that impossible to assess. I understand that to sell art, the broker/seller/?? will take a percentage of a sale, which is fine. But I've asked around (here in Portland, ME) and I haven't received a reference for someone who can help me with that. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Help Me Identify an Artist

I'm trying to find the name of an artist, whose work was picked up on thisiscolossal.com, but none of the search terms I can think of are getting me anywhere. The artist made images where they would take multiple photos of a skyline, for example, from the exact same position, throughout the day. Then they would splice those images together so that it would look like the exact same skyline (it wasn't scrambled or cubicised or anything), but at the center it would be early morning, surrounded by a band of mid-morning, surrounded by a band of afternoon, then evening, then night. I have a feeling that one of the skylines was Hong Kong, or Shanghai, but I'm not positive about that. Anyone know what/whom I'm talking about?
