It looks kind of like a human body, but wrong. Any description of what it is and/or how it was made would be welcome. Thanks!
Doing a design project for a record store and am looking for iconic album covers that only feature text? For instance, Live at Leeds, Masters of Reality, or Ornette! would all be good examples. Looking for ones where if someone were to substitute other words, what was being referenced would be obvious. Thanks!
I stumbled upon a photographer's website a few years ago who did amazing work. I don't remember who he is anymore. Help me find him. [more inside]
I recently received birthday cash, and I would like a sturdy drafting table. I have researched drafting tables, and companies like Studio Designs, Alvin, and Mayline pop up. Despite the many options present on sites like Amazon, I haven't found information reliable enough to whittle down to the best table for the space. Would anyone be willing to recommend a table that fits the specifications below, based on experience? Are there any tables too good to not recommend, regardless of space or cost? [more inside]
I'm a freelance illustrator. I'm trying to find lists of print publications, web sites, blogs, magazines, and any other outlets that pay (and accept unsolicited submissions). More specifically, I want to find appropriate/welcoming/well-fitting places to submit my portfolio, given the style of stuff I tend to do. Samples below the fold… [more inside]
A series of questions about what happens behind the scenes of a museum. How does an idea turn into an exhibit, and who ultimately approves its content? [more inside]
Software suggestions for the Mac? I have simple needs. I want a catalog number, date of origin, artist name, and a photograph of each piece. Sorting, filtering and searchability required. [more inside]
Hi all. Long shot, but - I saw this design in the Garst Museum in Ohio, where the Annie Oakley collection is kept. The design is worked onto a pair of leather gauntlets. The label said that the gloves had been a gift from Sitting Bull; it's possible, but also might be apocryphal. I'm interested in quoting the design in an art project, but before I do, would like to know whether anyone recognizes the motif or knows its associations. [more inside]
I want to make my own version of these very similar logos but I also want to get that authentic handmade look. How do I do it? [more inside]
Artists with open studios or small gallery owners: how do you want me to behave? I'm completely ignorant about visual art and often unmoved by it, but interested in visiting the various tiny galleries and open studio events around my city. From experience, I'll often be the only person -- or one of very few people -- there at the time, aside from the artist. Should I duck wordlessly in and out, ask you to talk about the work, something else? [more inside]
A dear friend is buying a house soon. His favorite artist is Mondrian, and he is partial to the earlier, simpler abstract works (the ones where the fields of color are large) rather than the later, more complex ones like Broadway Boogie-Woogie. I want to give him a nice Mondrian reproduction to hang in his new house. What's the best way to do this - buy one or make it? And if I make it, how? If I buy it, where? [more inside]

I have decided on a tattoo that I would like and I need planning help. I'm in Albuquerque, New Mexico. [more inside]
I'm working on a piece of art that requires me to use aluminum foil as the primary canvas. I've been using craft acrylic paint (the ones sold in plastic bottles at most craft stores), but I'm wondering if I should upgrade to more professional grade artist acrylic (or oil?) paint. I'm a bit clueless about paint types so any advice is welcome. [more inside]
I want to display a set of 4 or 5 satellite images in a nice matted frame. Suggests for how to do this are welcome. [more inside]
Where can I get a museum quality reproduction? Say I'm willing to spend a few hundred to a few thousand. The piece I'm currently lusting over is The Siren or The Green Abyss by Santorio. (You can see a picture of it here, may be NSFW). The painting is much more striking in person than the photograph shows. There are plenty of other paintings I would potentially be interested in getting reproductions of. [more inside]
I've been going from day job to day job for the past few years. There's always a point where I start to lose focus and my work suffers. Is this a sign that I should leave? Or is something wrong with me? [more inside]

I'm embarking on an overambitious personal writing project to profile the career of a pair of multidisciplinary artists who've been kicking around underground for 20+ years with next to no fanfare outside of their scene. Can you link me to some SUPER in-depth profiles of other working artists to give me an idea of what to aim for and what to avoid as I work on this? (Really long, career-spanning pieces would be best, but shorter stuff is OK. Bonus points if it's about someone you don't care for/about but the writing was so compelling that you loved reading it anyway, like this incredible profile of Carrot Top in Esquire.) What are some investigative profile best/worst practices when it comes to building something huge from scratch? What do readers love/hate to see in projects like this? [more inside]
I'm redecorating my living room and am in search of an arty, affordable framed print that will complement the existing decor. Ideas please? Specs inside. [more inside]
I found a gorgeous art book online with images I'd like to make into art prints. How can I do this given that all I have is a sort of cruddy resolution jpg? [more inside]
I got lucky on my very first time using a camera, and I'm afraid to try again, 'cause I don't think I can come close to getting anything nearly as good. [more inside]
Please help me artists of Meta Filter. I don't know what to do. I bought a print that I special ordered from one of my favorite artists, when the print arrived it was not what I expected. I'm not sure if I want it but don't know how to proceed. More details inside. [more inside]
After a few years, I’ve started to get back into drawing, and I miss having artist friends to collaborate with! Where can I find them? [more inside]
I want to put framed print versions of various playing cards on my walls - a few from the 1960's era Mille Bornes game, some from a deck of WWII aircraft identification cards. How best to achieve this? I obviously don't want to lose much detail in the creation process. Are there particular scanners, printers, and paper best suited to the task? Perhaps something a professional photographer would use?
I'm having trouble getting anyone to give me an overview of what an MFA program will be looking for in a student, how applications will work, or the types of programs and what those distinctions mean. [more inside]
I'm interested in exploring a particular aesthetic that I associate with the art of Yoshitomo Nara. [more inside]
About four years ago, I visited one of the Disney Interactive offices in North Hollywood (the one on Lankershim) and they had one of the coolest things I had seen (and haven't seen since) - a poster? print? painting? of Woody from "Toy Story", wearing Buzz Lightyear's suit, around a campfire with the Aliens. Does this exist in the real/outside world, or was it a one-off? I want it!
So, saw this and I'm sure I recognise it, but can't remember what it is. It's a black and white engraving style print, of a person in an elaborate bird mask which covers their shoulders (similar to a plague doctor mask but more elaborate). They have a person over their knee almost as if spanking them and they are reaching back to drive a dagger through their foot. Any ideas?
I'm interested in reading inspiring stories/biographies about struggling artists who overcome obstacles to create their art. What do you recommend? [more inside]
Where can I find royalty free photography and art for science fiction and space? Things like black holes, worm holes, spaceships, and futuristic technology? I'm looking for something with a Weyland Industries vibe to it.

Looking for biographical material about Claude Monet. Want to know something about his inner life, not so much his place in art history. I want to know about his ideas about gardening, life, love and family. Not much out there I can find.
I came across this painting (the right hand of the three) in St Marienkirche, in the middle of Berlin. The bottom right hand corner has a negroid grotesque figure that beggars belief. Does anyone know who painted this, and when?
I'm trying my hand at caricatures for parties. I've done an event (for free) and gotten really good feedback, but I have no idea what sort of rate I should be asking for. I want to do kids' parties. Any suggestions? [more inside]
We're hosting a Maker Fair later this summer. This is my first crack at organizing such an event, so everything is new, exciting, and freaking me out. Our theme is "City of Makers", and we'd like to include a collaborative installation that builds into a big piece of art over the course of the day. In this way, people will see that it's not hard to be part of making something awesome. Key to this is that the end result is awesome, and not a giant pile of crap (unless that too is awesome). My father passed a few months ago and left behind a painting that he picked up while residing in China many decades ago. We don't know much about the story behind the painting but would at least like to know what the artist's name was. Can anyone tell us what the Chinese on the painting says? Picture links inside. I found this superb woodcraft art thing at the thrift shop and was compelled to buy it. It's a picture made up of thousands of slices of twig, branch, logs. Various woods, maybe some bamboo. It has a 1970s feel to it (Owls!) I want to know what this sort of artwork is called, and perhaps identify its origin via an artist stamp and some numbers written on the back. [more inside]

I am a first-year high school art teacher. I need something for a couple students to do for the next three weeks that is relevant but not as interesting as what other students are working on. I want ideas that aren't just "write an essay on x topic", unless that really is the best option. [more inside]

ArtFilter: I'm trying to figure out who created a number of surrealist images. I remember inversion/fusion of right-side-up and up-side-down things as the main theme, with a lot of castle-islands, boats sailing through the sky, etc. Along the lines of this image. [more inside]
The empty walls in my office are driving me batty. I'd like to take a few high quality photos that I've taken over the years, have them blown up, matted, and framed. What's the cost-effective way to do that these days? [more inside]
I'm trying to identify this painting/print that I have seen on several design blogs. This example is at the Marlton Hotel in Greenwich Village.
