I have a planned A/V setup to add a receiver to my existing system, but I don't have the proper connectors to hook my existing equipment to a receiver. [more inside]

The house we bought years ago came with an existing home theater system, speakers wired into the walls, TV installed above the fireplace, components tucked away in a cabinet, all cables hidden away in the walls. It has been pretty awesome, but some of the components have started to fail. We bought a new TV, and the installer is talking about having to open up the wall to run the new HDMI cable alongside the existing cable that is already running through the wall from the TV to the component cabinet a few feet away. We really don't want to cut the wall open if we don't need to, and it seems to us that it should be feasible to use the existing wiring to pull through a new HDMI cable. Are we wrong? [more inside]

Please recommend movies that view coherently with the sound off. The example that I offer is 'Cast Away,' which, even during the book-ends of its series of scenes that have dialogue, every last minute point of film's exposition is conveyed through blocking, apparent emotions, and, obviously, action. I just want a 60" screen that just shows the video from the home theater and devices like Roku. Does it exist? [more inside]

I want to learn about IP and Network integration for home theater/home automation. Cedia looks like they have exactly what I'm looking for
...but not until September. I'm reasonably computer-savvy and a fast learner, so my first choice would be a fast-paced crash course, starting right-the-heck now. In order of preference: Live in-person class(es), interactive learning website or software, book, non-interactive website. Also, location in the Northeast US is optimal but not required. Thanks!

Fixing an HDMI connector: I broke the connector on one end of an in-wall HDMI cable. Is fixing it possible? This AskMeFi
thread proceeded with some of the answers I found on the internet until the poster realized they had a DVI cord.
So, I have an HDMI cable, one connector is broken, it runs 35 feet on a convoluted run through the walls and ceiling of an old house, so running new cable will not be as simple as just affixing a string to the old one and pulling it through.
Is fixing it possible?

As part of a larger project, I'm building a $3,500-$5,000 audio/video recording studio on a school campus. It isn't a ton of money, but it should be enough to do some interesting things. What would you do with this budget? [more inside]

Hi hive mind, hope you're well.
Here's hoping one or more of you might be able to help me out with an A/V setup question. I've been (slowly) building a fairly decent setup piece-by-piece around an Optoma projector
. Trouble is, I now have an issue splitting an HDMI combined A/V signal into HDMI video + RCA audio
. A little help here, please! [more inside]

Question for any audiophiles out there - I am looking at buying a used A/V receiver (5.1) and have narrowed my search down to two particular models (both priced about the same)...one is a NAD T742 and the other is an Onkyo Integra DTR 4.6.....any advice as to which one would make the best one for use in a home theatre system.
Added info - front speakers are Mission 700's, Paradigm sub woofer and rear are Paradigm Titans. I know that these receivers are not the latest & greatest on the market but I am confident that either one will provide great sound but I might as well get the best one of these two.

What do I call the device that would connect Tivo, DVD player, game console and cable input to my tv, so I don't have to unplug & replug RCA jacks all the time? Can you recommend a product that does this well and not too expensively? tv mixer? a/v mixer? A/B/C/D switch? [more inside]

I work for a smallish non-profit that is looking to outfit a conference room with some A/V equipment (projector, probably an additional plasma or two, presentation station, sound, etc.), and I'm having trouble finding someone in Chicago to help out with this. Google reveals a bunch of people who want to repaint my room and buy all new furniture, but I just need A/V help. Do you know any people / companies here that can help? [more inside]

A/V advice sought. Help me make a sound decision. My wife and I are the proud new owners of a Panasonic 50” plasma. Now we need to get the surround sound happening. I have high end equipment in another room that is, according to my wife, far too complicated to use. She wants to Keep It Simple. Watch tv, dvds, and listen to cds. [more inside]

I have a Gateway desktop with a standard sound card in it. The video is connected to a Vizio 42" LCD TV via VGA cable. We would like to connect the sound to the TV as well.
There is no PC Audio input on the TV...just red and white RCA jacks. I looked for an adapter cable or sound card that had RCA jacks out, but got confused really quickly. All help is appreciated!
