Worth it to replace ducts when central air is replaced?

My central air system for the upstairs has croaked and I am replacing the chiller and air-handler. I have two quotes in hand from my chosen vendor: one for a 2-ton chiller (using the existing flex ducts, circa 1994) and the other for a 1.5-ton unit plus new, R-8 ductwork. The cost difference is pretty big; will the smaller-capacity unit save me enough in electricity costs to pay for the duct work? [more inside]

How to cool off my basement apartment this summer?

Summer is coming! I love my apartment. It is large, it is in a wonderful neighborhood, it is affordable, it is also in Brooklyn (miracle!). However, I am from a Midwestern clime, and am hopelessly intolerant of summer heat. I have a basement apartment, so the windows that I have all have bars on them. [more inside]

Should I fix the A/C in my 2004 Honda?

I have a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid. The clutch in the A/C compressor is bad, as diagnosed by a well-respected mechanic. He doesn't want to do the repair, recommended the dealer. Dealer price for compressor replacement is US1165(ouch). Without A/C, trips of any length are pretty miserable. The noise from an open window at 70 mph is not pleasant, and I assume it affects the mileage. I can manage short trips up to an hour or so. It's been an especially humid summer in Maine so far. The Honda has 110,000 miles, and is in good condition. I question putting so much money into a car this old(Bluebook @ 6,200), though I expect to keep driving the car for the next several years. What do you wish you'd known when buying a portable air conditioner?

I'm buying a portable air conditioner for our second-floor apartment. All our windows have openings at the bottom that are of the 2 panel slider variety, and no window unit will fit. Since I've never bought such a thing and I'm not very handy, I could use a few tips, especially concerning the feasibility of moving it from room to room every day. [more inside]

Blowing some cool air on a hot server

Apparently as the air system in our office building has degraded, the heat in our offices during the spring and fall when the AC shuts off has become unbearable as air that is hotter than outside is blown around. Bad for people, but worse for our server room. It has gotten to the breaking point and we need to do something. I'm looking for a way to cool off our servers in the transition periods between winter and A/C being turned on. [more inside]

ack, i have to wash my face AGAIN...bleh....

Humid Office Filter: our hvac sucks. it's always humid in here but when the a/c is on, it gets down right wacky - it's muggy AND chilly. i feel sticky all day, my exposed skin is breaking out in pimples which i never ever get except in this gross indoor climate. what on earth can i do? a dehumidifier is out - i'm not in a closed space and we already have an office one...and i can hear the alarm on the one in the server room telling us that it's more humid than it should be. Why does my car A/C only work around town but not on the highway?

The A/C on my car ('92 Honda Prelude) works great from 0-40 mph. Above 40 mph, the ratio of cool to hot air moves decidedly in favor of hot. Any ideas (besides the obvious: take it to the shop).

How to resolve a leaking A/C issue in my home

hi all, this is a first question for me, so here goes; I have spent this Memorial Day weekend without A/C at home (in Dallas, TX) because I have water "streaming" from somewhere at the top of the condenser unit (inside the house). to be more specific, the water is blowing out of an opening through which a cold (to the touch) copper pipe enters the "box" above the condenser unit... needless to say, the floor has been saturated and will be a second issue to resolve later. any info that would help me resolve would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

I think my air conditioner is dying. Help me not get Rheem'd.

Last spring my husband and I noticed that a small puddle of water would form on the garage floor every time we used our central a/c for more than a few minutes. We had a local a/c guy come out and he told us the pan was leaking and needed to be replaced. He quoted us around $2,000 which I thought was extremely high considering he'd done the exact same job a year previously for our neighbor (who has the same model house and, incidentally, recommended this company) for $400. Central A/C fan running backwards?

A/CFilter: Central A/C unit is 7 years old and ran pretty well until this year. Now it barely cools and has to run all day to do it. Have done all the homeowner checks (cleaned unit, checked filter and vents, sealed cracks and ductwork, etc.) A technician charged us $140 (having "cleaned" the unit and checked the coolant) to hold his cigarette up to the running unit and, using the smoke as his diagnostic tool, proclaimed that the fan was running...backwards. He insisted that this can happen with some units after a power surge. Did we just have sex with our clothes on? Or is he for real? Can a fan spontaneously run backwards? [more inside]
