I'm trying to set up a wireless network for my neighborhood, maybe 10 houses on my block (across the street and adjacent to us). Basic setup would be that I have the wired DSL internet connection and I share it over 802.11b/g. I've looked into omni-directional 2.4ghz antennas, but I'm not sure how sensitive it would need to be, nor do I know if the clients are going to need directional antennas. What's the best way to go about doing this? [more inside]

I am about to upgrade my pda from an old iPaq 1910 to any of several newer models. I am looking at several choices that have built in 802.11b wifi... and I am utterly clueless as to how to use wifi!

My sister lives in a small town in NH that started offering free wireless access in the center of town. I'd like for her to be able to connect to the internet from her house, which is about .5 miles away from the antenna but with tall buildings (church steeples) in between. She has a desktop, her husband has a Centrino-equipped laptop, and I visit with a 802.11-able laptop. My brother-and-law and I are thinking of building a cantenna or the like and mounting it on the roof . But what do we attach the antenna to? All the routers/"access points" I've looked at so far assume a cable (ethernet) connection as input signal which is then output as wireless or ethernet or both. But we want to both receive and dispense wireless. I know there are "repeaters" that can do this but all the affordable ones I've studied only output using proprietary protocols, not 802.11(g), which would require buying proprietary equipment for all the computers in question. Any inexpensive solutions?

Last week, I updated my linksys WRT54G's firmware and soon the hardware was dead (I think it was a coincidence). I was stranded without a connection and picked up a brand new WRT54GS which worked ok, but keeps dropping wireless clients and the point will disappear every so often, even though it is only 15 feet away. How can I fix this? (a bit more inside) [more inside]

While I am working, every 10 mminutes or so, my Toshiba tablet computer keeps dropping my own home network and informs me that there are other networks available (the neighbors'). How can I tell it to ignore all networks except my own?

I just discovered that my vtech 2.4Ghz cordless phone is messing up my wireless g network, knocking my powerbook offline whenever I take a call. I'd like to move to a 5.8Ghz setup if it will prevent this, but there are a zillion options. Which would you pick and did it play nice with your network? [details inside] [more inside]

VPN problems: I'm trying to find a basic wireless router (802.11b) that will let me have more than one VPN connection passing through it. All the consumer models I see support VPN but will only let me have one computer using VPN at a time. Anyone know of such a product or - even better - use such a thing?
