Is the 3D in Age of Ultron good, bad, or negligible? For my taste - I thought the 3D in Avengers 1 & Cap 2 was good & worth it, and the 3D in Thor 2 was fine but didn't impress me in any way as to make it better than watching it in 2D. (minor spoilers inside, please don't spoil me more) [more inside]
After a turbulent period in my life, I've realized that being a struggling artist is not the lifestyle for me. I've recently obtained my BFA in illustration and I'd appreciate any suggestions for career options. [more inside]
I'd like to have polygonal pieces made for an (essentially) flat dissection puzzle similar to this nice-looking tangram set at Shapeways. The pieces are simple, but I could use some guidance / tips on the whole process of bringing them into existence. [more inside]
Cheap 3d printers under $200 to keep a hobbyist busy? Not interested in kickstarter vaporware, and can be barely functional. This is to keep an electronics hobbyist friend from "fixing" other electronics in the house, actual usefulness not required.
I have one week to create a wearable mask for a client. Ideally, it would be something like this but open to other techniques. I have photos and my client has deep pockets.
Where can I buy a collection of lenticular images? [more inside]
I am thinking of buying my husband a 3-D printer for Christmas/Birthday but I know very little about them. I am wondering if it is "too early" to buy one. Do those in the know think they will improve dramatically or decrease in price dramatically so that it make sense to wait? If it does seem like a reasonable purchase, are there ones that stand out for value? (I've attempted to research but I feel like I am out of my element.)
I'm trying to draw a 3D ellipse with a 2.5D graphics engine (Core Animation layers) which allow me to only compose my ellipse with line segments that must be moved into place using rotations and translations. I'm having trouble with the order of operations and can't get it to draw properly. Any graphics gurus or game programmers out there who can help me? [more inside]
Will seeing Guardians of the Galaxy in Imax 3D make me sick? [more inside]
I'm looking to get up to speed on the current state of 3D printing, from a pretty high level. I'd like to know what the major technologies are, how they compare to each other, who the major players are, and how their products compare with each other. [more inside]
What is a good digital humanities/digital visualization intro course or workshop for me? Difficulty level: immediate, NYC/London. [more inside]
In an effort to improve my work situation and life in general, I have decided that I need to make a slight career adjustment, and that adjustment necessitates that I (re)learn how to use Maya. This scares me because I am so far out of my element since I am 6+ years out of college (where I learned Maya as part of my degree). Assuming all I need is a technical education, where online could I start to learn how to model and animate again? I just want to be able to claim basic proficiency on my resume and not be lying about it.
I have a deeply nostalgic love for my grandparents' former home, a generic but beloved split level they lived in from the 1950s to mid 2000s. As an artist and crafter with an obsessive love for details, I have long noodled with the idea of making an incredibly accurate recreation of the house in miniature... but I struggle with where to start. Architectural models, dollhouses? What is the best route forward? [more inside]
I am creating a physical 3-dimensional object from a flat logo (that looks 3-dimensional), help needed. [more inside]
Things I would like to reproduce: 1) A very simple place setting that's been discontinued at IKEA (2 spoon sizes, 2 fork sizes & a knife) 2) A simple ceramic bowl my other half made that I broke. :( (Replica doesn't have to be ceramic, just has to be that shape.) Are there any services available that will scan a simple object in 3d and then print a copy of it? Is ZEUS the only way to do it?
Hi, I'm looking for cheap/free 3D environment design software -- it can be a stand-alone program, or it could even be a kind of 'map building' tool that comes with computer games these days (so you can build your own levels, etc) [more inside]
I had an idea for a product. I'd like to make a few prototypes using a 3d printer. I am utterly clueless on where to start. [more inside]

My wife and I are looking into investing in a 3D printer in the $2-3,000 price range. Can anyone who actually owns one / has used one extensively give any suggestions on brands/models to look at? We're hoping for a basic desktop model with a size capacity of about 8"x8"x8" for making small props, prototypes, etc. Also, what can one expect to pay for the "goop" or whatever they use for a printing medium?
I have two Sony Digital Handycams, each one has Firewire / iLink DV output. It strikes me that I could get a big 2x6 piece of wood and mount both cameras onto it, and record on both simultaneously and from two different eye viewpoints. [more inside]
My original proposed topic for a publication I'm writing in was about printing organs and bone marrow but it may be rejected because someone else proposed the same idea. I'm currently brainstorming ideas before tomorrow. Currently I'm thinking of writing of genetically engineered humans. Any other ideas?
I want to explore animating fabric being folded, cut and stitched in 3D. Is there any particular 3D software that would make simulating this particularly easy, or even just marginally easier than others? Or is it actually pretty basic? I can spend a bit... [more inside]
For a project, I need (well, want) to find a 3d CAD drawing of Earth. Any file format is workable, but .dwg and .3dm are preferable. Does anybody know where I might be able to find this? [more inside]
Hello Graphics Minded MeFiers. How can I (ungraphics minded MeFier) make a simple 3d image like the one posted below? I have spent a week or so with several programs but all have proven too complicated or look too ugly. Isn't there a simple program out there that I can "paint" 3d ribbons with like in the linked image? thanks all! http://imgur.com/QB3Aisg
I have decided that in a year's time I would like to be a Cinema 4D expert-- or at least more of an expert than I am now. What are the best resources out there for me to make that happen? [more inside]
In the original Superman films General Zod and his accomplices are trapped in The Phantom Zone, which in the films is represented as a 2D 'crystal' prison sent spinning through space. I am looking for any writings/insights into how the visual effects for this were created, and exactly by whom. Any other insights, from comic book lore, about how the Phantom Zone was represented - especially visually - would also be appreciated. [more inside]
Can I use polarizing filters with two aligned video projectors to make a 3D image that then can be viewed with Real3d / IMAX polarized eye-glasses? [more inside]
I have Illustrator and intend to make an animated GIF. A tetrahedron is a pyramid with a triangle base. I can't make the 3D extrusion on CS4 agree that I want a pyramid shape. It gave me a triangular prism, though I followed an online tutorial (but that had a square base - which might be part of the problem, and it was for CS3). (No, I don't want to use Flash or download a trial version of Maya but thanks for the thought) So, online free 3D software where I can capture a number of positions of a tetrahedron, and redraw them from within Illustrator? I will need to also place text on each face, so if I can do it in one program only, I'll be happier.

I am interested in buying a spacer textile mattress. Anyone out there who has used one or knows where to buy one?
I'm looking for a decent pair of 3d anaglyph glasses, mostly to look at Mars pictures like this. Ideally, a pair that work over prescription glasses and better than the paper ones. Amazon has plenty but the reviews are all over the map. Looking for personal recommendations.
School teacher looking for 1 page nets to create 3D models of theme-park attractions. E.g. A roller coaster, log flume, Ferris wheel, runaway train. I've been looking on the internet and draw a blank. Any help would be appreciated. Students will be able to design their own images, and the more able challenged to adapt the model. Internet links preferable, but if you know of a book, then please let me know. Thank you.
I've tried yet again to tackle learning Blender, and yet again, I'm stuck on what should be a basic simple thing. Adding a material to an object. Can someone get me unstuck? [more inside]

Where can I find good quality stamped or molded _3D_ reproductions of zodiac signs (the fish, goat, scales, etc - not the written characters) of a "classical" appearance, between 1" and 2" diameter? I found several places selling a zodiac candy mold, which might work, but I'm not sure I like the style of the images. I'm wanting to use whatever I find as a pattern for sand-casting metal to make adornments for a big armillary sphere I'm building for my garden, so it doesn't really matter what they're made out of. Tin, plastic, wood, paper - whatever. If they're too flimsy I can make castings of them and use those as patterns. Suggestions would be appreciated. :-)
I'm pretty agnostic about 3D and IMAX both. But some films really should be seen 3D (e.g. Avatar) and/or IMAX (e.g. Dark Knight). So...if I view Avengers 2D and/or in non-IMAX, will I be missing out? Each option limits my field of showtime options (and increases expense)...

What are some activities that exercise visual or structural type thinking? Something to do with science, technology, or 3-dimensions preferred. I'm looking for puzzles, hobbies, or other activities that might be performed through an actual job that I'm just not aware of. As examples, auto-mechanics classes and memorizing anatomy books immediately comes to mind.

I'm looking for a type of 3D shader / renderer for which I've seen a number of demos. Most featured many objects (in the hundreds), often in greyscale, often with many of the objects acting as light sources. The quality of the renderings is very high, with a beautiful, soft chiaroscuro effect. I have a feeling the technique starts with an 'S'. Any ideas, hive mind?

I'm looking for usable 3d meshes of Earth, Moon and Mars I know the data is out there for free, but the data I've found is ridiculous (4 terabyte high resolution files), hard to use (5 degree slices that would need to be assembled), in formats that only planetary geologists can use, or simply stuck in the labyrinth of poorly maintained and documented government web sites where I can't find it.
